Police officer, 2 others shot in Louisiana town

Published August 26, 2015 Associated Press

SUNSET, La. – Louisiana State Police say a police officer and two other people have been shot in the southwestern Louisiana.

State police Superintendent Mike Edmonson says troopers are on the way to the scene in Sunset, about 70 miles west of Baton Rouge, after getting a call around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Edmonson says the shooting reportedly took place near a convenience store. He says the officer was "responsive" but he has no details on the extent of the officer's injuries — or those of the other two people who were shot.

Tonette Thibodeaux of the Sunset police department confirms that an officer was shot but says she does not have any details.

    Updated, 7 p.m.

A Sunset police officer was shot Wednesday afternoon by a man who then crashed his car into a mini-mart about three blocks from where he is alleged to have stabbed two people, St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said.

Acadian Ambulance officials reported that two people are dead and two were injured in the incident.

Information was not immediately available from authorities on who was killed, but one of the injured was apparently the suspect taken into custody.

Guidroz confirmed around 6:30 p.m. that the suspect in the shooting was alive and had been taken into custody. He was not injured except for possible gas burns and was taken to a Lafayette hospital for treatment, the sheriff said.

The suspect, who has not been identified by authorities, will be booked into St. Landry Parish jail upon his release, Guidroz said.

Police were seen hugging each other outside the mini-mart as emergency medical crews brought a stretcher up to the door, apparently loading the shooting suspect into an ambulance. Bystanders said they heard at least two gunshots.

Guidroz said the incident unfolded as a Sunset police officer responded to a report about 3 p.m. of two people being stabbed. The responding officer was shot, Guidroz said.

He said the suspect fled about three blocks away to the Sunset Mini Mart gas station where he crashed into the market and holed up. The SWAT team made entry shortly before 6 p.m., using tear gas to try to get him out.

Guidroz said three people were in the store when the suspect came in and all safely escaped. The suspect’s brother and a State Police negotiator were on the scene at one point trying to get the man to come out of the store.

The officer was airlifted to an area hospital but his condition was not immediately known. The conditions of the two people who were stabbed also were not immediately known. Acadian Ambulance reported that eight ambulances and three helicopters responded to the scene off of Martin Luther King Drive near Interstate 49.

Advocate staff writers Maya Lau and Danielle Maddox contributed to this report.

This proves that regardless of how many gun control laws are passed the bad guys will have guns because they don't obey laws int the first place. This habitual criminal had been in the possession of a stolen gun before this incident.

    Sunset homicide victims identified

A Sunset woman was stabbed to death Wednesday and a police officer responding to the stabbing was shot and killed in an incident that began at an Anne Street home and ended with the arrest of a suspect identified as Harrison Lee Riley Jr., 35, who was living in Arnaudville.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said three people were stabbed at 121 Anne St. in Sunset around 3 p.m. Wednesday. One of them, Shameka Johnson, 40, of Sunset, died from the injuries, according to Guidroz.

She is the sister of Shaterral Johnson, the interim mayor of Grand Coteau. Another sister of the mayor, Surlay Johnson, 34, also was stabbed and was in critical condition Wednesday night at Lafayette General Medical Center, Guidroz said.
Guidroz said Sunset Police Officer Henry Nelson, 52, was shot and killed when he responded to the incident.
Nelson ran for Sunset Police Chief in 2014.

Dozens of law enforcement personnel and paramedics responded Wednesday to a standoff with the suspect in two stabbings and the shooting death of a Sunset police officer. The suspect lived. (Photo: Freddie Herpin, Daily World)

The suspect's wife, Courtney Jolivette, was also stabbed in the incident. She was taken to Alexandria Medical Center, where she was undergoing surgery.

Police officers said the suspect appeared to be high on drugs, according to Guidroz.

After the stabbing and shooting on Anne Street, the suspect drove three blocks to JR Food Mart and service station and drove his car through the front of the store, Guidroz said.

Melanie Monroe, a store cashier, told The Daily Advertiser that Riley was a regular customer who knows the store’s owner. She said Riley was naked when he got out of the car and asked for the owner.

“I told him he wasn’t here and he asked, ‘Are you sure?’” she said.

Monroe, the owner and a customer escaped and the suspect barricaded himself inside an office, Guidroz said. Despite early reports, no hostages were taken.

Police used tear gas to try to flush the suspect out. A police negotiator and the suspect's brother also tried to talk him out, Guidroz said.

Law enforcement officers "had to go in with tear gas, C gas, hammers and firemen's axes" to breach the office door inside the store. "He was not coming out. He was ready to fight," Guidroz said, adding the suspect resisted.

The suspect, who has an extensive criminal history, was taken to a Lafayette hospital, Guidroz said.

By 8 p.m., the store was reportedly on fire. However, it was extinguished shortly after.

Riley has a long criminal history dating back to 1997 with arrests in Orleans Parish, Houston and St. Landry Parish, KATC reported.

He has been arrested at least 14 times, including twice this year. Most recently, he was arrested in Opelousas on drug charges. He allegedly had methadone, crack cocaine and morphine in his possession and used them in front of a child under 17, according to court records.

In January, he was arrested for illegal carrying of weapons and illegal possession of a stolen firearm in Iberville Parish.

Riley's first arrest happened just a few months after his 17th birthday in Orleans Parish for possession of a stolen automobile and flight from an officer. He would be arrested six times more times Orleans Parish from 1997 to 2004 for flight from an officer, drug charges, illegal possession of stolen things and robbery.

It does not appear that Riley has ever been convicted in Louisiana, but spent at least 10 years in Texas prisons for crimes in Harris County, the Houston area.

Riley was arrested six times in Texas from 2000 to 2004, according to court records. His arrests include burglary of a vehicle, assault on a public servant, possession of marijuana, failure to identify fugitive, aggravated robbery with a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest.

He spent three years in a Texas prison for a 2000 assault on a public servant, a police officer, according to court records. He was then convicted for aggravated robbery with a dangerous weapon in Harris County in 2006 and sentenced to seven years in prison.
