Worker who doesn't speak Spanish sues in Texas

HARLINGEN, Texas -- A former employee who does not speak Spanish has filed a job discrimination lawsuit against a South Texas assisted living center.

An official with Canterbury Court Assisted Living and Memory Care Community in Harlingen did not immediately return a call Monday for comment.

Margaret Trafford, who is white, filed the federal lawsuit Friday in Brownsville alleging discrimination because of race and not speaking Spanish, plus retaliation.

KGBT-TV reports the 48-year-old Trafford worked as marketing director for several months in 2007.

The center's Web site, in English, says the ambiance "embraces Texas charm and Mexico traditions." The site also says Canterbury Court is an equal opportunity employer.

Trafford, who lived in San Benito, resigned in October 2007. She now lives in the Los Angeles area.

Have they hired other speakers of Spainish with lesser skill set? I bet they have.

Good, it's time people stand up for this. There's no way many of the jobs are being filled because they are better or smarter, it's just a way to keep non-Spanish speakers out of a job.

That's what we are gonna have to start doing. LAWSUITS!!!!! It's time for a class action suit against our government!
