Our nation is a land of immigrants. Our families came to this land, legally and lawfully, and built a nation that is the envy of the world. A culture arose from this wonderful mix of people and backgrounds; an American culture. That culture and our nation are imperiled today. The cause is the uncontrolled and unlawful entry of illegal aliens from around the world.

A key test of a nation’s sovereignty is control of its borders. The United States does not control its borders. We have 10 to 15 million illegal aliens in our country with thousands pouring over our borders. They cross over our southern and northern borders and from around the world.

This influx of illegals costs every American citizen. Welfare costs, healthcare costs, the cost of increased crime, educational costs, and the cost of a society being disrupted, are increasing and will continue to increase as long as illegal immigration is allowed to go on, unstopped.

Our national security is imperiled by our failure to control and secure our borders. America is the ultimate Terrorist target. The war that International Terrorism has been waging for more than two decades is, ultimately, aimed at the United States. Having, for all practical purposes, open borders, is an invitation that the terrorists will take advantage of, if they have not already done so. We are vulnerable to disruptions in nations, such as Mexico, which is seething with unrest over its recent election. An outbreak of violence would mean a flood of illegals swarming over our southern border. Our border states would become tinder boxes. Our country has lost the respect of other nations because of our unwillingness to secure our borders.

The number one priority is to secure our borders. That requires a security fence from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico on our southern border. While it is being constructed, we need sufficient manpower to police the unfenced sections of our border. On our northern border, we need increased surveillance, both human and technological, to secure that border.

The current “Hold and Release” policy must be changed to a “Detain and Expel” policy. Our border and customs personnel must have clear guidelines and must adhere to them. Illegal aliens must be expelled, immediately, upon apprehension. Today, we detain them and release them with a date for a hearing. They never show up for a hearing. They thumb their noses at our laws. It must be clear that nobody can request refuge status or political asylum if they are illegally here. They can only apply outside our nation. Except for emergency healthcare, no other services will be allowed. Immediate expelling will cut the cost of handling the influx. Employers who hire illegals must face very severe penalties. If they have to pay huge fines and lose contracts because of their actions, it will be a deterrent to that illegal hiring. We, also, must punish nations, through economic means, that encourage their nationals to illegally come here.

In summary, the American people demand action. We need a leader in Congress to get it done.
