District Information
Please give a brief description of your district:
A vibrant and growing area of middle Tennessee,
including Nashville (state capital) and surrounding
areas. There is a great mix of commerce (especially
the insurance industry), education (19 universities in
Nashville alone), industry (including a variety of
factories), transportation (23 trucking companies in
Nashville alone, the crossroads of three Interstate
highways, plus the historic Ingram Barge Company),
agriculture (livestock -- especially horses, plus
certain crops and vineyards), and the arts (hey, it's
Music City). Nashville is a media center, with
several network TV stations, two daily newspapers, and
two dozen radio stations.
Percentage of Democrat, Republican, and Unaffiliated
Voters:
The 5th District covers parts of three counties:
Davidson (Nashville), Wilson, and Cheatham. The 5th
covers about 95% of Davidson County, which is about
65% Democrat. The two outlying counties have about
the reverse proportion, and are two of the state's
four most conservative counties. (Williamson County,
which is in the 7th CD, neighbors Davidson County.
The fourth, Blount County, is in east Tennessee.)
Independent campaigns have only had fractional
support, partly due to Tennessee’s restrictive
ballot-access system for parties other than the Big
Two.

immigration or immigration reform is or would be?
My opponent, Jim Cooper, voted against HR 4437.
During the deliberations, he voted FOR all the
amendments that watered down security, and AGAINST all
of the amendments that beefed up security. It’s among

I come from an immigrant family — as do most
Americans, if we trace our history back far enough. I
have nothing against other cultures or other
languages. I do, however, have something against
people that come to our country and refuse to become
Americans. (One can embrace the new American culture,
without abandoning their ethnic heritage.) And, I
have something very strongly against people that sneak
across our borders.
I’m especially appalled that our Border Patrol
recently prosecuted to of their own agents, who were
sentenced to several years in Federal prison, for
shooting at a drug smuggler that shot at them. That a
government agency would do that, and that a jury of
twelve Americans would allow it, is inconceivable to
me. If elected, I would work to overturn that
decision, set those agents free, and prevent such an
event from recurring.

Candidate Pledge
I, ___Thomas F. Kovach___, hereby pledge to stand with
the American public to have the US Border secured and
existing immigration laws enforced with the intention
of reducing the number of illegal aliens entering and
remaining in the US. I understand that the vast
majority of Americans want the border secured,
taxpayer benefits for illegal aliens ended, local
police helping to enforce immigration laws, and
employers that hire, aid, and abet illegal aliens to
be charged.
Furthermore, I will not support any trade agreement or
Executive Branch treaty that compromises our ability
to enforce our existing immigration laws and threatens
US sovereignty.
I will actively oppose any attempt to remove or
replace the current laws that say illegal aliens are
to be deported with a guest worker or temporary worker
program that allows illegal aliens to stay or quickly
return to the US.
