Home defense tips: 7 Ways to protect your garden from looters and intruders

(Natural News) Many preppers devote their resources, time and effort to their home gardens to provide food for their family or to sell fruits and vegetables at the farmers’ market.
Before SHTF, it would be wise to protect your garden from looters and intruders so your hard work doesn’t go to waste. If you’re not sure where to start, try setting up an alarm or getting a guard dog to protect your property. (h/t to AskAPrepper.com)
As a prepper, you must learn how to prep discreetly. This means not telling all your neighbors about your gear and survival stockpile.
You should also learn how to protect your property from trespassers and thieves before disaster strikes. To do this, you may need to combine several strategies since no one strategy will be 100 percent effective.
Here are some suggestions on how to protect your home garden from looters or trespassers.
Alarms
Depending on the size of your property and garden, there are various kinds of alarms that you can set up to keep away trespassers.
If you prefer a high-tech option, you can get an alarm with motion detectors. Alternatively, you can save money with an old-school alarm like a hidden trip wire tied to a can of pebbles.
You can also get something simple like a solar-charged light with a motion sensor. Whatever alarm you get, you need to make sure it is hidden so looters won’t be able to spot it and find a way to avoid it.
Compared to a method like an electric fence, an alarm will require considerably less power. But before SHTF, make sure that your off-grid power system can provide electricity for your alarm so your garden remains protected.
https://www.naturalnews.com/images/B...hLiveShows.jpgDeceptive planting
If you’re familiar with edible landscaping, deceptive planting works in a similar way.
Edible landscaping incorporates herbs, fruit-bearing plants, vegetables and edible flowers into your yard or garden. Start by choosing one or two plants that are both attractive and edible.
Like edible landscaping, deceptive planting is another creative way to sneak more edible plants into your landscaping without alerting looters when SHTF. The technique is also perfect if you want to maximize production in a limited space.
Unless your neighbors are gardeners themselves, they won’t always know what kind of plant they are looking at. And until those plants start bearing fruit, the average person can’t identify what they are.
However, the real giveaway is how you plant them. Rows of the same sorts of plants growing will often look like a vegetable garden.
But if you plant the same crops randomly, you can trick people into thinking that you only have a decorative garden. You can hide more obvious crops like celery and pumpkins.
Avoid using normal tomato cages to support tomato plants. Instead, use a homemade wood trellis to support the tomatoes because the cage may give the plant away.
This method may become harder as the plants begin to bear fruit and it’s easier to recognize a tomato or pepper. But if you plant flowers around those vegetables, the flowers will help hide your vegetables. (Related: Home gardening 101: Make the most out of your yard by planning an edible landscape.)
Electric fence
An electric fence is another popular method of protecting your home or garden from animals and people.
Since an electric fence is not normally considered in the same category as other more dangerous traps, there is little risk of having problems with the law. However, an electric fence will require electric power, which could be a problem if you are facing a post-SHTF scenario.
Before investing in an electric fence, look for the most energy-efficient electric fence and find out how much power it consumes. This ensures that if you need to increase the number of solar panels you have or add another battery to your shutdown system, you can do so before disaster strikes.
Guard dog
A well-trained and loyal guard dog can help protect your property and garden. Dogs are naturally territorial and will make a lot of noise if a stranger enters your yard.
It doesn’t really matter if your dog is big or strong enough to stop someone, as long as they can keep guard and let you know when they come. When the time comes, you can arm yourself if necessary.
A guard dog will also sleep lightly so if someone trespasses in your garden in the middle of the night, the dog will wake up and check things out. If your dog senses something suspicious, it will alert you.
If you plan on getting a dog, you also have to stock up on supplies for them like dog food and animal medicine.
Poisonous plants
If you are knowledgeable about plants, you can grow some poisonous plants around your garden.
To prevent severe harm to your family or animals on your property, avoid plants that could kill anyone who eats them. Instead, settle for plants that will be irritating rather than deadly.
It’s best to avoid poisonous plants if you have small children or curious pets on your homestead. If you want to grow poisonous plants, have a plan for working in your garden so you don’t accidentally come into contact with them.
Privacy fence
A privacy fence is an effective method of protecting your garden. There are a lot of options in fencing available, but if you want to set up a privacy fence you need one that can’t easily be seen through.
Get a privacy fence that is higher than most, like a seven- to eight-foot high fence since it’s too easy to see over a six-foot fence.
Remember that while a privacy fence is going to stop the casual viewer from looking into your garden, it won’t be enough to stop your neighbors, especially those with yards that share that fence with your own.
If this is the case, you might have to bribe some neighbors by offering to help them get their own gardens started.
If you think this is a possibility, prepare by keeping a good stock of seeds, fertilizer and gas for a rototiller on hand. With these extra supplies you can help nosy neighbors help them get rid of their grass and start planting.
In exchange for your help, you can negotiate to get a bit of what they grow come harvest time.
Traps
If you’re talking about home security, you might think about setting up traps like a punji stick trap.
A punji stick trap is a pit lined with sharpened sticks. This pit is then covered and camouflaged. During the Vietnam war, the spikes were sharpened bamboo, but in the U.S., you can use other materials in place of bamboo.
A punji stick trap could be large enough for a person to fall into or small enough for a looter’s foot or leg to fall into them. However, you might want to rethink this option because punji stick traps are actually illegal in all 50 states.
One major problem with traps is that they are indiscriminate. Once you set a trap, they can hurt anyone, like your own child or a wandering pet or goat.
If you insist on using traps, keep the legal risk in mind. To avoid accidents, don’t leave out traps in normal times.
Save them for the time when they might be needed, like after SHTF and you want to keep violent looters away from your home and garden.
Protect your garden from other looters like wild animals
Your garden may also be in danger from threats other than humans. If you live in a rural area, birds, insects and animals may target your crops.
Keep your home garden chemical- and pesticide-free by researching how to use predatory insects. Sometimes, these helpful insects may be more effective and they can help ensure the healthy growth of your organic fruits and vegetables.
If your garden is targeted by birds or wild animals, you can try building a “reverse greenhouse” around it. To make this structure, you will need poultry cloth for the walls and a shade cloth for the roof.
The shade cloth may be necessary if the area you live in is very hot. Adding the shade cloth to the reverse greenhouse for your garden can also help cool the temperature inside your garden by at least five to 10 degrees, depending on the time of day.
Together with the poultry fabric, the shade cloth can help prevent birds from flying into your garden.
And even if the poultry cloth isn’t strong enough to keep bigger animals like opossums and raccoons out of your home garden, it should fool them into thinking they can’t break through it.
Before SHTF, protect your home garden from looters and wild animals by getting a guard dog or setting an alarm.

Water supply and prepping: Emergency water solutions when your supply runs out

(Natural News) As a prepper, the last thing you want is to turn on the faucet and not have any water flow from it. Before this happens to you during a long-term water disruption, it’s best to learn about several ways to find and harvest more water for your stockpile.
Some options include installing a well with a solar-powered pump on your homestead and learning how to harvest rainwater. (h/t to PrepperWebsite.com)
Why do you need alternative strategies for a water shortage?
You can stock up on enough bottled water so your family has enough water to drink during a long-term survival disaster, but how do you know when you have enough water?
According to minimum recommendations, you should have at least one gallon of water per person. It is also best to keep a three-day supply on hand at all times.
However, if the weather is hot you may need twice as much water. This still doesn’t include the water you need for washing, flushing the toilet, watering the garden or for your pets and livestock.
During the first day or two without running water, you can find water in places like toilet tanks, water heaters and swimming pools. But after these supplies are depleted, locating water will be an ongoing effort.
You should also remember that even if these alternative sources are available in your area, other people will be heading for the same water sources when SHTF. If you don’t want to fight other people just to get more water for your family, you should use other means to get the water you require.
Survival scenarios also highlight the need to plan ahead and get prepared beforehand, especially if you have a home garden and livestock that will require water.
https://www.naturalnews.com/images/B...hLiveShows.jpgIf you are concerned about where to get water when SHTF, below are some tips on how to get more water when your supply runs out:
Install a well with a solar-powered pump
People who live in rural areas use well water, which is ideal because it is often a reliable source of water, except when there is no electricity to operate the pump.
To avoid this issue, you can get a solar-powered pump for the well in your homestead. If you have a well, consider getting a solar-powered pump before disaster strikes so you can rest easy knowing that you can still access the water in your well even during a power outage.
While this option is the most expensive on the list, it is also one worth considering since it offers the most reliable supply of water. (Related: Prepping tips: How to survive with a limited water supply.)
Harvest rainwater
Even non-preppers can learn how to harvest rainwater, and this prepping skill will come in handy when you are experiencing a disrupted water supply.
You can either splurge on a quality setup with gutters feeding into a storage tank, or you can choose something simple like a rain barrel with a filter. Whatever your budget, you need to store the collected water in a covered container to prevent mosquitoes from using the water as a breeding ground.
Covering the rainwater you gathered can also help prevent the water from evaporating.
If your house doesn’t have gutters, you can use the channels in your roof that divert water into a stream off the rooftop. Simply arrange containers underneath that area to catch the rainwater.
For example, you can get your roofer to add diverters that will direct water off the front of your roof so you can gather the rainwater in a tank or rain barrel when it rains.
Use swales
Before SHTF, you can also use swales to store rainwater in your home garden.
Swales are water-harvesting ditches. However, unlike drainage ditches that cut across the contour of the land to speed water along, swales are built “on contour” to slow water down and sink it into the earth.
Swales built on contours collect water and help to recharge groundwater tables. They help to control erosion and are designed to convey excess rainwater into their ditch-like interior. Swales hold the water until it is gradually filtered through plants and soil back into the area.
You don’t need special equipment to build a swale. Get a shovel, a pick and some stakes, then be ready to use a bit of elbow grease. But if you are not strong enough to dig a swale yourself, you can make things easier by borrowing or renting a backhoe.
The size of your swale will depend upon the volume of water your area receives during a storm.
When choosing where to dig the swale, look for the lowest point of your property. Dig deeply enough so the storm runoff collects inside the ditch.
Pile the soil up around the trench as you excavate to create the berms, or the raised sides of a swale that contain filtering vegetation and porous soil. The recommended rule is three feet horizontal to one foot vertical.
You need to grow plants to help keep the mounds in place and to filter and use the stored water. When choosing plants for the swale, choose varieties that can withstand different conditions.
If you live in areas with little annual rainfall but have sudden rainstorms that drop huge volumes of water at once, choose plants that are drought tolerant but grow well in sudden but infrequent heavy rains.
If you’re not sure what to plant in the swale, grow native plants that are already adapted to the area’s changing climate and fluctuating rainfall. During the first year of their installation, the plants will require additional water to help them establish.
After some time, the plants in the swale should grow well with only the captured water, except in severely dry periods.
Amend the soil in the swale if it is nutritionally poor. You can also add a ground cover of pebbles or rocks in the interior of the swale.
The pebbles or rocks will help further filter water, hold in the soil and can be piled to provide check dams that will help slow the flow of water.
Keep plantings dense to discourage weeds and choose plants that are at least four to five inches tall and resistant to flooding.
Build a condensation trap
When SHTF, you can also gather water using a condensation trap.
You can build a condensation trap by digging a pit and placing a receptacle to catch water. Use branches angled down towards the receptacle to direct the dew and frost that gathered on the branches overnight into the catchment container.
Modern preppers have it easier because you can use plastic sheeting instead of branches to divert the water.
This method of collecting water can help provide water for a couple of animals, but unless you build a lot of condensation traps, you won’t get enough water for a large home garden and your whole family.
Check online for detailed instructions on how to create condensation traps before SHTF.
Learn about dryland farming
The principles of dryland farming can help preppers and home gardeners who want to learn how to use as little water as possible and keep the moisture in the soil longer.
Knowing how to use the least amount of water will be useful in a watering emergency. This can help you make the most of a limited water supply, especially when dealing with a long-term water outage.
Some dryland farming techniques that might help include mulching heavily and making liberal use of rotting wood chips in your garden beds. You can also pair this method with rainwater collection.
Dryland farming also makes use of drought-resistant, region-specific crops so your home garden needs less water.
Preparing ahead of time ensures that you and your family can survive a long-term water supply disruption. Look into techniques like rainwater collection and building swales to make sure that you have enough water for your whole family, livestock and your home garden when SHTF and water become scarce.
And if disaster doesn’t strike, some of these techniques can help you save a bit of money on your water bill as you add more water to your stockpile.

Chlorine dioxide makes chickens healthier, study finds

(Natural News) There is a whole lot of fear being peddled right now about the world’s chickens succumbing to so-called “avian flu,” this being one of the many cover stories politicians and the media are using to explain away skyrocketing inflation and the deliberate mass murder of poultry. Even if it really was true that bird flu is a serious threat, there is already a simple solution for it that science discovered nearly a decade ago.
Researchers out of Pakistan, publishing their work in the Pakistan Veterinary Journal, found at the time that chlorine dioxide (ClO2), a water-acidifying agent, heals a damaged gut. Poor digestion, just in case you did not know, is a common entry point for diseases like bird flu to form.
For the study, researchers randomly assigned 160 day-old Cobb-500 male broiler birds to four different treatments using a ClO2 product called Dutrion. The first group, DW-0, served as a control group while DW-0.3, DW-0.4, and DW-0.5 were given 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 parts per million (ppm) of ClO2, respectively, in their drinking water.
After collecting and analyzing lower ileum tissue and digestive system samples from the birds, the team found that ClO2 is a powerful immune-supportive agent in chickens – especially at higher doses. At levels of 0.5 ppm, ClO2 was seen in relative liver and gizzard weight among the different animals, the study found.
“It can be concluded from present findings that addition of chlorine dioxide (Dutrion) can serve as an effective tool to improve broiler performance by reducing the load of harmful pathogens and improving gut health of birds,” reads the paper’s conclusion. (Related: Chlorine dioxide also cures covid – watch as Dr. Manuel Aparicio explains more about it.)
https://www.naturalnews.com/images/B...hLiveShows.jpgJust like ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine, the establishment does not want you to know about chlorine dioxide
Because ClO2 is not a high-dollar, blockbuster drug from the money-grubbing pharmaceutical industry, it is being completely ignored by the establishment in its quest to eliminate chickens and their meat and eggs from the consumer marketplaces.
The powers that be want you to believe that chickens everywhere are dropping dead from incurable bird flu – the type of bird flu that only a novel mRNA (messenger RNA) “vaccine” can keep under control. This is the latest narrative to hit the headlines, if you can believe it.
Just like with covid, the establishment is creating an imaginary “problem,” so it can “cure” that problem with another new form of pharmakeia. Meanwhile, natural remedies like ClO2 exist that are affordable, easily accessible, and do not cause harmful side effects.
Much like ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), ClO2 is rarely talked about in a positive light – if it is even talked about at all – because to do so would be to cut into Big Pharma’s bottom line. If they can stop you from finding and taking ClO2, then the chances of you desperately resorting to some new Big Pharma concoction increases.
In 2020 at the height of the manufactured Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) “pandemic” scare, the mainstream media did briefly mention that ClO2 was being used as a cleaning agent on surfaces at Sacramento-area hospitals. At the very same time, however, federal regulators were hounding the public not to try ClO2 themselves, and to instead wait for an Operation Warp Speed “vaccine.”
“ClO2 is a gas in a solution,” one of our readers explained in the comments. “It is cheap and simple to produce. It is being suppressed by Big Pharma as it cures more things than cannabis!”

Survival basics: 7 Essential skills for modern preppers

(Natural News) Non-preppers might take modern conveniences for granted, but experienced preppers know that it’s also important to learn and practice different survival skills so you can find food, water and shelter when SHTF. Don’t just rely on your high-tech gear and tools.
Below are some essential survival skills that modern preppers should learn and practice so they can survive if they lose their gear or bug-out bag when disaster strikes. (h/t to AskAPrepper.com)
How to start a fire without matches
You need a campfire to stay warm, cook and boil water when SHTF. Knowing how to start a fire, even without matches, is crucial to survival.
You can start a fire with different methods, but the best and most effective is the bow drill method.
You will need:
- A flat piece of wood
- A spindle or a straight stick
- Another thin stick for the bow
- Some string (e.g., shoelace or paracord)
- Tinder (e.g., dry leaves, pine needles, shaved bark, etc.)
Steps:
- Cut the spindle to about 12 inches (30 cm). Sharpen one end.
- Cut a V-shaped notch on a flat piece of wood and place the tinder underneath it.
- Tie the thin stick to the spindle at one end, then loop the string around it.
- Place the spindle into the notch in the wood, then start rotating the spindle by pressing down on it. Use the bow stick to turn the spindle.
- Once you’ve generated a bit of friction and heat, you’ll see a bit of smoke. Add more fuel so that the smoke catches fire. Keep going until it is burning steadily.
How to build basic shelters with natural materials
Having a bug-out bag is crucial for your survival, but what if you lose your gear after a disaster?
https://www.naturalnews.com/images/B...hLiveShows.jpgWhile preparing for various scenarios, take the time to learn how to build basic shelters using materials you can find. You need shelter, even a temporary one, for protection when it is hot outdoors.
The most basic shelter is a debris hut, which you can build from sturdy sticks and leaves. A debris hut can be built within one to three hours. It will do for short-term protection.
Steps:
- Find an area that is well-drained and sheltered from the wind.
- Use an eight-foot stick and poke it into the ground at a 45-degree angle. Stack other sticks against the first stick to form a triangle.
- Cover the arranged sticks with at least four inches of debris to form a waterproof layer.
- Make sure the bottom of the shelter is dug out slightly so rainwater can drain away.
- Position the entrance facing away from the wind for extra protection.
- When lighting a fire, place it near the entrance so you can keep warm and cook food.
- Line the inside of your shelter with soft materials, like grass, for padding.
How to identify edible herbs and plants
If you are facing a survival scenario and are running out of food and supplies, knowing how to forage for edible herbs and wild plants may save your life. Before SHTF, sign up for classes or self-study to learn how to distinguish between edible plants and their poisonous look-alikes.
You can also read up on a universal plant edibility test to learn how to identify edible plants correctly. Keep in mind that this test does not work for wild mushrooms, so avoid those when using this test.
To do the universal plant edibility test:
- Look for common poisonous traits like fine hairs, spikes, waxy leaves and milky or discolored sap.
- Separate the plant into its different parts: fruits, flowers, leaves, stems and roots.
- Smell each part separately and check for a strong or unpleasant odor.
- Place a small part of the plant on your skin, like your elbow or outer lip, then wait 15 minutes. Look for any irritation or allergic reaction.
- Taste each part of the plant separately. Spit out any parts that have a strong taste or bitter aftertaste.
- Chew the plant, then wait another 15 minutes to see any reaction. If you are fine, swallow the plant and wait at least eight hours for any adverse reactions. This is the only way to confirm if a plant is safe to eat.
How to look for water sources
When disaster strikes, you might get stranded in the wilderness and lose your gear. You can’t survive more than a few days without a water source, so you need to learn how to find and purify water.
Keep these tips in mind to learn how to spot water sources:
Puddles and other water-filled depressions in the ground
You may find puddles in low-lying areas and they can be filled with rain or groundwater seeping up from the earth’s surface.
Snow and ice
If it’s cold enough, you can melt snow or scrape the top layer of ice from a lake or river for fresh drinking water. Don’t consume untreated snow or ice because this will drop your core temperature.
Dew on plants
If the timing is right, you can collect the morning dew on plants.
Rainwater
Set up a tarp to capture and funnel rainwater into a container like a bottle during the rainy season. Purify the water you harvest before drinking it.
Animal tracks
If you spot animal tracks in the wilderness, you may find water sources.
Once you find a water source, purify the water by filtering it or by boiling it. Bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one minute to eliminate bacteria and other contaminants.
How to catch small prey with traps
Once you build a fire, set up a shelter and find some water, set a trap to catch small prey.
Setting a trap is one of the most common and effective ways to catch small prey, and making a snare is one of the simplest ways to do this.
You will need:
- Wire
- Wire cutters
- A trigger mechanism, like a bent stick
- An anchor point, like a log or tree
Steps:
- Cut the wire into three pieces of equal length. The wire pieces must be long enough to form a noose around the animal when set in place.
- Create a loop with one piece of wire. Grasp each end in one hand and twist it together to form a lasso.
- Attach the looped wire to a trigger mechanism, like a bent stick or spring-loaded holder. The trigger system should be secure enough to hold the wire once it is set up.
- Securely attach the other two pieces of wire to an anchor point, like a log or tree, at eye level from where you plan on setting the trap. The wires must be securely tied or fixed so the animal won’t be able to escape.
- Place the noose over an area where you think animals may pass through, then carefully set up the trigger system so that when an animal walks by, it will trip and release the noose around its body, effectively trapping it in place. How to deal with wildlife
Wild animals are common in rural areas and some of them may be dangerous and even deadly. Learn how to deal with wildlife to avoid accidents during a survival scenario.
Follow the tips below to learn how to deal with wild animals:
- If you encounter wild animals, avoid sudden movements. This can frighten them and make them attack.
- If you encounter a predator like a bear or a mountain lion, stand your ground. Lift your arms and stand tall to make yourself look as large as possible.
- Don’t wander off a hiking trail after dark.
- Don’t surprise a mother with her babies. Even a gentle-looking deer may attack to protect its young.
- Make noise to let animals know you’re nearby so you don’t startle them.
- Keep an eye out for animal tracks and poop. These signs can let you know what might be around.
- Always carry bear spray if you’re in an area known to have bears.
- Don’t try to run away. Don’t make direct eye contact for this could trigger an attack.
- Don’t make the animal feel trapped. If an animal like a bear feels cornered, it could become aggressive.
First aid for SHTF emergencies
Knowing first aid is also crucial to your survival when disaster strikes. Even if you don’t get hurt, you can use your first aid skills to help a family member who gets injured or wounded after SHTF.
Knowing how to treat minor injuries and life-threatening ones can save someone’s life.
Here are some essential first-aid tips that might help:
Sprains and strains
Tear off a piece of cloth, wrap it around the injured area and tie it securely. This will provide some support to the injured arm or ankle.
Bleeding
Apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth. Apply pressure until the bleeding stops.
Hold the wound above the heart level if possible.
Burns
Flush the affected area with cool water for 20 minutes. This will reduce the pain and help prevent further damage to the patient’s skin.
Fractures
Splint the affected area with tree branches and make sure the fractured limb is positioned comfortably.
Apply firm pressure on the splinted area to prevent the injured body part from moving.
Hypothermia
If you or someone else suffers from hypothermia, carefully move them to a warm and sheltered area.
Cover them with a blanket or extra clothes. Give them warm drinks and food to help their body temperature return to normal.
These essential survival skills can help you stay alive when SHTF even after you lose your gear and bug-out bag.
