Lentils

Zucchini
Often mistaken for cucumber, zucchini actually belongs to a different family -- the squash family -- instead of the gourd family. Like tomatoes, zucchinis are a low-maintenance crop that only require a well-drained soil and six to eight hours of sunlight every day to grow.
Although low in carbohydrates, zucchinis are a nutrient powerhouse. A one-cup serving of cooked zucchinis provides 2g of protein, 2g of fiber, 26 percent of your daily vitamin C requirement, 10 percent of your daily potassium needs, eight percent of your daily magnesium requirement and 13 percent of your daily vitamin B9 needs.
Garlic
In addition to nutritious vegetables, you can also grow spices in your garden. Garlic is one spice you'd want to have an abundant supply of when SHTF because this versatile ingredient can add both flavor and nutrition to your meals. Garlic contains a variety of essential nutrients, such as vitamins C, E and K, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium and zinc.
Garlic also has plenty of survival uses: You can use it to make an all-natural insect repellent, an antibacterial salve for wounds, a natural remedy for cold sores and intestinal parasites, an herbal tea for treating cough or the common cold, and many more. Scallions
Scallions are another must-grow vegetable in your food garden because they're also great for enhancing the taste of your dishes. Scallions belong to the same family as garlic and are also great for making breads, pancakes, sandwiches and pungent relishes for cooked meats.
What makes scallions a great survival crop is that you can easily regrow them with minimum effort. When cutting scallions, make sure to leave some room above the roots and place these in a container with water. Set this container in a place that gets plenty of sunlight. Scallions typically take about two weeks to regrow. You can regrow scallions up to five times using the original stem.
Peppers
There are many varieties of peppers. Depending on your preference, you can grow sweet-tasting bell peppers, mildly hot jalapenos or very spicy habaneros. Some peppers, like bell peppers, are great cooking ingredients and can even be eaten on their own as a snack. Cayenne peppers can be dried and ground into a powder for use as seasoning, while tabasco peppers can be used to make hot sauce. Whichever peppers you choose to grow, you can use them in a variety of ways to add flavor to your food.
Another type of pepper you can grow is black pepper. But because this warm-loving plant does not tolerate frost and will stop growing at temperatures below 18 C, it is best to grow peppercorns in containers instead of your garden. Peppercorn plants need lots of sunlight and grow very slowly; they may take a couple of years before they produce peppercorns. Be patient when growing these plants.
Lavender
Versatile herbs like lavender make great additions to your pantry and medicine cabinet. Lavender can be added to salads and cocktails or used to make a soothing herbal tea. You can also use lavender to make DIY soaps, candles, bath salts, carpet fresheners and bug repellent. As a survival item, lavender essential oil is useful for treating wounds, reducing inflammation, relieving allergies and promoting relaxation.
Like most of the plants on this list, lavender needs a well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight. You can dry lavender after harvesting to retain its quality and make it last for two to three years in storage.

Why do you need cover crops?
There are different ways of cover cropping, from holding a field for a full year, part of spring or over the winter. Incorporating cover crops into your garden means you can just sow the seeds after you have harvested a late summer crop.
There are also several benefits of planting cover crops in your garden. One is to build up organic matter in garden soil.
Planting cover crops like legumes can add nitrogen to the soil, or directly to the plants if they are grown simultaneously.
Lastly, growing cover crops will help break up compacted heavy soil with plants that have thick roots. If left to rot, some cover crops will create space in the soil for nutrient and water transfer.
"Feeding" garden soil keeps it alive. Cover cropping is one way to grow your own mulch, which feeds the soil in different ways from organic mulches.
By choosing which plants to grow, you can choose what to feed your soil. Some gardeners may want to add some nitrogen, or help break up the soil with your chosen cover crop. (Related: Sprouts: Your perfect emergency preparedness food choice.)
If you're not sure which cover crops to try, you can start with a blend of oats, peas and radishes.
The oats will create a thick mat of mulch that keeps weeds down the following spring. While the peas add nitrogen, the radishes can also break up the garden soil.
You can also try growing buckwheat. This plant is easy to cut back, but you should cut it before the seed heads form so it doesn't re-seed.
Plant buckwheat in the spring before a later succession of heat-loving vegetables like peppers, tomatoes or zucchini. You can leave the cut stalks or work them into the soil.

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel for diesel engines made from vegetable oil and/or animal fat. Since it is derived from renewable organic materials and has been shown to reduce certain harmful emissions when burned compared to conventional diesel, biodiesel has received wide attention as a "green" source of energy. Here are steps to synthesize this renewable fuel yourself.

Work in a safe place. This can mean in a clinical laboratory setting. You can find suitable laboratories at most colleges and research institutions. Working at home is also possible but requires caution - manufacturing your own biodiesel may be illegal and can put your house at risk of a fire, smoke or carbon monoxide.
- A good work place will be well-ventilated and have clear access to running water, eye-wash stations, fire extinguishers, spill containment supplies, a fire alarm and a telephone to use in case of emergencies.

Observe laboratory dress codes. Most laboratories will have posted dress instructions you should follow. You should always wear a long-sleeve shirt, long pants, and shoes in any laboratory setting.
- When making biodiesel, you should also wear a heavy-duty apron, chemical-resistant gloves (butyl rubber is best when handling methanol and lye) and protective goggles or eyewear. The gloves should come up to your elbows or have cuffs you can pull over your long-sleeve shirt.

Obtain good-quality oil. The easiest oils to use for biodiesel are neutral vegetable oils like canola, corn, and sunflower oil - these oils are readily available at grocery stores and have a low melting point, which means they won't solidify if they get too cold.[1]
- Avoid using peanut oil, coconut oil, palm oil, tallow, and lard. These sources of oil solidify at relatively high temperatures. Biodiesel usually has a lower melting point than the oil it's made from[2] , but these oils can still be difficult for beginners.
- Also avoid olive oil. It, peanut oil, palm oil, tallow, and lard all contain more acids than in the recommended neutral oils. These extra acids can interfere with the reactions that take place to create the biodiesel.
- It's also possible to use waste vegetable oil which has been used for cooking. However, waste oil should be filtered to remove particulates, then allowed to settle for 24 hours to separate the oil from any water or other impurities. Pure oil will be clear and bright, with no sediment.[3]
4 Ensure all containers are well-labeled. Only use containers for making biodiesel - don't use them for storing food afterwards, even if you wash them well.

Add 200 ml methanol to glass blender or mixer. Take care not to splash or spill. Set the blender or mixer to "low".

Add 3.5 grams (0.02 oz) of lye. Try to weigh the lye quickly, as it absorbs moisture from the air. For this reason, be sure tightly seal the container you got the lye from.[4]
- The ensuing reaction between the methanol and lye produces sodium methoxide. Sodium methoxide cannot be allowed to sit for long, as it degrades in the presence of moisture.

Allow the lye to completely dissolve in the methanol. The process should take about two minutes. Proceed when mixture is clear, with no undissolved particles.
- Again, be attentive - the sodium methoxide will degrade rapidly, so proceed to the next step as soon as the lye is completely dissolved.

Heat 1 liter (0.3 US gal) of vegetable oil to 130° F (55° C) Add the hot oil to the mixture. Allow the new mixture to blend for about 20-30 minutes.[5]
- As the reaction proceeds, two products are formed - biodiesel and glycerin.

Pour the mixture into a wide-mouthed glass container or pitcher. Allow the mixture to sit.
- The mixture should separate into two layers - biodiesel and glycerin. Because biodiesel is less dense than glycerin, it should float, forming the top layer.

Allow the mixture to sit for several hours. When it has separated completely, carefully keep the top layer to use as your biodiesel fuel.
- Separate the top layer from the bottom by pouring it off very carefully or using a baster or pump.

Dispose of the glycerin properly. Check with local waste disposal authorities to see whether glycerin can be thrown out with your normal garbage - it usually can.[6]
