Immigration Raid Shuts Down Jones County's Largest Employer

LAUREL, MS (WLOX) - Federal Immigration Agents raided Howard Industries in Laurel Monday morning, taking dozens of illegal workers into custody.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) wouldn't say how many illegal immigrants they believe were employed at the company. But Bill Chandler, Executive Director of the Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance, said the number of arrests could be in the hundreds.
Workers leaving the plant Monday told reporters that so many people were arrested, the plant had to shut down. ICE agents offered few details of the investigation.
"If someone is found to be in violation of immigration laws, they will have due process under law. They will have the opportunity to present the facts of their case before an immigrations judge. If the judge determines they are ineligible to remain in the country and orders them deported, then certainly we will carry out those orders of removal," said Barbara Gonzales with ICE.
Howard Industries is the number one employer in Jones County with more than 3,000 people on the payroll. That's according to the Jones County Chamber of Commerce. The company produces commercial and industrial products ranging from electrical transformers to medical supplies.
In 2002, Howard Industries was given $31.5 million tax dollars to expand operations. The state required the company to create 2,000 new jobs. The Mississippi Development Authority said in 2002 that if Howard falls short of employment goals, the state would take away $3,000 for each job not created.

JACKSON, Miss. --Gov. Haley Barbour has signed into law a bill that will require employers to check immigrants' status.
But Barbour, a Republican, said he has "serious concerns about specific provisions of the bill that could have unintended negative consequences."
Barbour signed the bill Monday, and it becomes law Jan. 1.
It will require employers to use the U.S. Homeland Security electronic verification system to check whether new hires are legal residents. Employers who hire illegal immigrants are subject to losing their business license for a year and any state contract work for up to three years.
Any illegal immigrant found working in the state could face a one-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $10,000.

Over 3000 employees and ICE nabbed about 350. GOOD JOB ICE! :)Quote:

Lets see now - $3,000 x 350 = $1,050,000Quote:

Thats not a bad fine - for starters [/b]

Hundreds of Factory Workers Are Held in Immigration Raid
By ADAM NOSSITER
LAUREL, Miss. — In another large-scale workplace immigration crackdown, federal officials raided a factory here on Monday, detaining at least 350 workers they said were in the country illegally.
Numerous agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement descended on a factory belonging to Howard Industries Inc., which manufactures electrical transformers, among other products.
As of late Monday afternoon, no criminal charges had been filed, said Barbara Gonzalez, an agency spokeswoman, but she said that dozens of workers had been “identified, fingerprinted, interviewed, photographed and processed for removal from the U.S.â€

mr chandler. im sure that you are an american citizen who also has to abide by laws.
The fact that you are calling any kind of raids on companies that employ ILLEGAL ALIENS AKA Undocumented workers is something I find to be troublesome. If I didnt know better, I would think that you do not care about the immigration laws of the US. or the laws that forbid illegals to work in the US. Are you more concerned about the american having a job as opposed to illegals taking the jobs from your fellow american citizens???? Maybe you do not care about these workers using stolen or forged identities to frauduently obtain jobs. I bet if your SS# and your name was used by someone else, you might think differently.
Remember, being in the country illegally is a CRIME. being in possession of forget or stolen documents is also a crime.
While i do feel sorry for the children of these people arrested, i also have to think these parents KNEW they were living a lie and trying not to be found out. However, i ask that you do not use the "they are seperating children and families" because if you look really hard, you will see that most of these people probably left family members in their home country as well. I dont see you or any other groups screaming the above when someone is sent to a prison here in the county or state for committing a crime. Remember that next time you speak. And also for the kids, well, they can go back to the home country of their parents and if they desire to come back, they can petition for their parents once they turn 21. The problem with that is if they were arrested and deported in this raid and because they were illegal. then they will be banned from entering by the US Government.
Good work icefan!!!!!...keeep it coming.by the way what union are you in?Quote:

THIS IS A TOTAL DISGRACE WHAT THE GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL HAS PERMITTED TO HAPPEN TO THE BORDERS AND INTERIOR OF THE UNITED STATES. THIS INCLUDES THE COURTS, HEALTH DEPARTMENTS, SCHOOL SYSTEMS, AND EMPLOYERS.
PEOPLE SHOULD BE TRIED FOR TREASON AND BEING A TRAITOR.
THEN HOW DID 350 ILLEGAL ALIENS GET JOBS THERE? DID THEY USE E-VERIFY?Quote:

Hopefully more and more citizens everywhere are going to notify I.C.E when companies are violating the law by employing illegals.
There are over 8.8 million unemployed American workers, and that number is increasing every singly day. Just google "layoffs" and you will see notices of layoffs all across our country.
We should also send letters to all employers employ illegals, that they have been reported to I.C.E., to allow them an opportunity to use E-Verify before I.C.E. drops the hammer on them.

How refreshing to have this happen in MY hometown and to happen at MY previous employer. I worked in management at Howard for 10 years, and just left there about a year ago. Day after day, I would watch the illegals line up to apply and test (well, to have the personnel manager - Humberto Gonzales - help them to apply and test). Week after week, I would watch the plant formen be required to take Spanish language classes in order to communicate with these people. Month after month, because of the position I was in, I watched what was once a quality product go down the drain...and thus, because I was in direct contact with the customer on a daily basis, have to make up excuses as to WHY so I wouldn't lose my job. So, like ICEFAN, I say WAY TO GO, ICE!
I, too, don't understand why they wouldn't have come in at shift change so that they could get two shifts. 350 isn't even HALF of what they could've gotten.
I will tell you this, though - the three "yummy" Mexican restuarants in town were closed for business yesterday and are still closed today. I drove around town today and saw no activity in the "Hispanic District"...guess they're all hiding out. And I even went to Walmart (where you normally can't even get down the aisles because there are SO MANY ILLEGALS...and where one stole my purse earlier this year and two tried to steal my cart full of already-paid-for groceries last year), and I didn't see the first Hispanic person in the entire store...and I was in there for about an hour.
I'd forgotten what it was like to not be completely surrounded by people speaking Spanish! It was SO awesome! Now, I'm not totally naive. I know it won't stay like this, but TODAY WAS A GREAT DAY TO LIVE IN LAUREL. It was like old-times.
My hat goes off to you, ICEFAN, for being persistent. I can't wait to hear what it was like back at work today!
Ho AmericanMomma, welcome. Thanks for relating your first hand experience at HI and in Laurel.
Hopefully this put the fear into the second shift and the illegals have decided to move on. If I.C.E. can make HI use E-Verify for all employees, the problem should resolve itself in short order. Maybe we can scare Sanderson, Marshall durbin, and Southern Hens to toe the mark. It's doubtful, but it's worth a try.
