Joe Arpaio should drop out of a U.S. Senate race to allow a conservative candidate a better shot at the nomination, says an immigration watchdog.
August 28 is drawing closer. That is the day Arizona Republicans vote in their primary to pick a nominee to fill the seat being vacated by Jeff Flake.
At the moment, Rep. Martha McSally is leading tea party favorite Kelli Ward (pictured below) by a RealClearPolitics average of eight points. But that is in large part due to the continued presence of the well-known former sheriff, who is splitting the conservative vote with Ward as primary day draws closer.
Four polls are included in the RealClearPolitics analysis, all of them showing McSally with a lead that ranges from two to 13 points, with Ward following in second place in all four polls.

William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, says Arpaio should drop out and if the 86-year-old wants to run again, he should seek the seat now occupied by Sen. John McCain.
"The best thing that could happen," says Gheen, "is for Joe Arpaio to endorse Kelly Ward and come out of this race so we defeat RINO Martha McSally. And then Kelli Ward would then swing in behind Joe Arpaio and support him for the other Senate seat. That would be perfect."
Ward, who was recently interviewed on American Family Radio, complained that Arpaio has yet to criticize McSally – viewed by some as the "establishment" candidate - but is coming after her instead.
"The entire campaign is set to drive a wedge between me and conservative voters," she alleged, "to tell lies about me and my family and to basically to make it much easier for Martha McSally to take this seat."
