DACA Debacle: Hawks See Lost Bargaining Chip (ALIPAC)

Conservatives worry Trump ceding valuable leverage with pull back on Obama immigration order

by Brendan Kirby | Updated 27 Feb 2017 at 8:45 AM

Every work day that President Donald Trump leaves his predecessor’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in place, about 210 illegal immigrants get protected status, based on averages from last year.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has not released DACA statistics since Trump took office, but in the fiscal year that ended in September, the government approved 52,940 new applications and renewed another 146,136. DACA, which applies to foreigners brought to the United States before age 16 prior to 2007, shields recipients from deportation in most cases and allows them to work in the United States.

It has been a sore spot among immigration hawks, who otherwise are pleased at the shift in policy that Trump has enacted. He promised to revoke the executive action that created the program, but since becoming president has not done so. The president has spoken of having a “heart,” and the administration has signaled that the status quo will remain — at least for now.

It’s safe to say, people favoring a tougher line on immigration are getting antsy.

“We’re very close to making a big issue of Donald Trump not honoring this promise,” said William Gheen, founder of the Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, which endorsed the president early. “If he’s going to break this promise, he might break others.”

DACA recipients represent a small share of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. But hard-liners said Trump is wrong to leave it in place, even if most observers believe that group should not be a top priority for deportation.

“It’s still a big deal, because on the campaign trail, he said he would repeal it on Day One,” said Chris Chmielenski, director of content and activism at NumbersUSA.

Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies, noted that candidate Trump did not merely call DACA a bad idea; he argued that President Obama exceeded his legal authority in creating it.

“He needs to make a clear break with the program,” she said. “I don’t think [Trump’s position is] clear to a lot of the people who want to support his immigration agenda.”

Mark Krikorian, executive director of the think tank, said it is troubling that Trump appears to be surrendering on DACA without getting something of value in return.

He said Trump ought to use the program as a bargaining chip to advance his legislative agenda. For instance, he said, Trump might offer to keep the protections in place in exchange for eliminating the diversity lottery that awards about 50,000 green cards every year to applicants selected at random from around the world. Another possibility would be a law passed by Congress making it mandatory for employers to use the E-Verify system, which confirms that job applicants are authorized to work in America.

    "I don't think there's a plan," he said.

At the very least, Krikorian said, Trump should suspend the program for new applicants and announce a date at which existing permits will expire.

"There is no case for the country to give DACA permits to new recipients who don't have them," he said.

Gheen said there is no reason for Trump to use DACA as a bargaining chip for changes in the law.

Illegal aliens must be deported including DACA's. Trump must end the program, revoke all work permits that have been issued and deport DACAs according to his excellent prioritization program he has laid out.

END DACA NOW. All of it, DACA 2012, END IT, Expanded DACA 2014, END IT, DAPA 2014, END IT.

End it all and push hard and fast to remove all illegal aliens from the United States. Truth be told, it IS this illegal alien population that is the greatest "lure" to future illegal immigration. This existing population provides a home, housing, food, money, networking, jobs, information, tactics, ploys, protection, aid, abets and harbors to new illegal aliens arriving every day. And yes, they are the "base" for foreign drug cartels and other foreign criminal enterprises. No doubt about it. The drug cartels fund the migration, provide the mules to bring them in, set them up with drug runs in return and the illegal aliens serve those cartels every day they are in our country.

All this "heart" talk is troubling. The President comes out today to repeat what Democrat Governor Terry Macauliffe told him to say, it is the "bad hombres" we are going after now. Surrogates for President Trump and amnesty shills are out everywhere saying the President is not going to deport the dreamers or go after them. The American people have been fleeced by illegal aliens no matter the ages. They have been victims of all types of illegal alien crime. It is our dreaming American citizens that we want as a priority and their families.

The fact that the President promised to end DACA day one speaks volumes. He did not tell the truth or more bluntly, he lied. To not end the continuation of DACA day one should deeply concern the most ardent Trump supporters.

Many so called "dreamers" are themselves feeling more confident. It will be interesting to hear the "dreamer" illegal alien give the democrat response in Spanish tomorrow evening after President Trump.

DACA, which applies to foreigners brought to the United States before age 16 prior to 2007
So 2007 is the cut off for the original daca - the border has been wide open since 03 or so. They were swarming around like crazy renting apartments from mostly Asian realtors or property owners. The city has rules and regulations, utility companies did too that were cast away to allow all this aiding and abetting of illegals. Some did have a parent there for a while till the girls could have a baby then the parent disappeared. The girls also did farm work being picked up by a van (usually see that with asian farm workers so maybe all in cahoots) till they had a baby, then they no longer worked.

It would seem this "brought by a parent" thing was an on the to-do list for future reasons aka daca. Then obama brazenly tried extending too all the more millions entering after '07 and dapa for anchor baby parents. The extension really blurs the line and away from the original sob-sob reason of "brought by the parent" daca eligible as it covers those with an expired visa. How can they prove a parent brought them?

Just dupe American citizens, make them pay for everything and people fall for it by defending illegals - even as they are killing, raping our citizens, intimidating/assaulting voters and supporters of our immigration laws & costing us billions yearly!
Trump needs to stick to his campaign promises!

Bush II is the one who really really opened the door wide open for almost 6 years of his Presidency. Under pressure, he finally started enforcing in late 2006, but by then so many had come in, it was like trying to empty the Titanic with a bucket.

At least Bush signed the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which the Congress never fully funded. Also, he was doing the business raids that were netting large groups of illegals. Of course his end game was amnesty, just like Obama's. Both Bush and Obama did what they did (Obama deportations) in an attempt to win public favor for a "comprehensive" immigration reform (amnesty) bill. Thank goodness it didn't work for either of them.

I'm offering no excuses for Trump's failure to keep his word. However, I'm going to assume he really did plan on ending DACA ....... that was until he allowed folks like Obama, Rince Piebus, and Paul Ryan to convince him that such a plan would be a disaster for his presidency. Trump should have stuck to his promise and continued to listen to people like Jeff Sessions and Kris Kobach who support the ending of DACA.

Keep your word, Mr. President, end DACA now!

No he wasn't doing the business raids. He didn't start those until way after 2006. And then just did a few. I posted this research years ago on ALIPAC. In Bush's first 6 years, he did 3 business raids. Bill Clinton by comparison did high hundreds every year and increased them every year of his Presidency until by 2000, he was busting over 1,000 businesses a year. Then nothing by Bush for 6 years and then just a few until the end of his Presidency.

MW, there should be no doubt that President Trump meant to end the Obama Executive Orders as promised. He didn't, however, and every day that more illegal aliens receive some type of amnesty under the Trump administration grows the pool of activists and complainers, who, along with family members will claim rights, etc. It gives lawmakers more individuals to pled for in their efforts at legislation.

How well the President was prepared for this assault we do not know but caving on DACA gives leverage to amnesty supporters not the President. Allowing any amnesty betrays the American people. We learned the first time.

Every time the compassion talk is used by the Trump Administration seems to be a tactic to soften up the American citizens for what may be coming. Talk such as it is so hard, it is tough, it is rough, I am a dad, a grandfather, we are going to have heart. No mention of we are going to honor our promise to the American people.
