An immigration enforcement activist is hopeful that President Donald Trump – after hinting that he might pardon former Maricopa County Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio – will actually put his words into action.
During a recent interview on the Fox News Channel, Trump said that he is seriously considering a pardon for Sheriff Arpaio.
"He has done a lot in the fight against illegal immigration,” the president told Fox News. “He's a great American patriot, and I hate to see what has happened to him."
Arpaio was recently found guilty of criminal contempt for defying a state judge's order to stop traffic patrols targeting suspected illegal immigrants. In his final years as Maricopa County sheriff, Arpaio had emerged as a leading opponent of illegal immigration.
William Gheen – who serves as the president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC) -- insists that Arpaio’s tough immigration stance is why former President Barack Obama wanted him out.
"Americans like me see the judge and charges against Joe Arpaio as political abuses of power by the Obama administration,” Gheen asserted. “The Obama administration didn't like Sheriff Joe saving American jobs and lives by enforcing existing Arizona state and federal immigration laws, and, therefore, they went after with judges and resources at the federal level. They felt they'd be able to shut him down. And that's why they've done the things that they've done."
However, the conservative immigration expert says that he wants the president to do more than just pardon Arpaio.
“We believe that a pardon is definitely in order, but we believe that Trump should go further than that and should hire Joe Arpaio as a member of his cabinet or administration and appoint him to the task of securing America's southern border,” Gheen expressed. “Joe Arpaio has a history of fighting illegal immigration and amnesty for illegals – long before Donald Trump arrived on this issue."
