Possible Contamination in US Halloween Candy

    Friends of ALIPAC,

We debated about whether we should send you this material or not. After taking a vote on our website, 14 of 16 of our first ALIPAC activists to respond advised us to send you this notice.

We apologize that it is off topic a bit, yet we can all see how our government is failing to adequately enforce our existing immigration laws, financial market regulatory laws, and food safety laws.

There are strong concerns on the Internet that some or much of the Halloween candy on US shelves right now is contaminated with the substance called Melamine, which sickened and injured over 50,000 infants in China recently.

Let us clearly state that we do NOT have any direct evidence that there is scientifically confirmed toxins in the candy.

We are discussing the issue after a Youtube video from an outfit called JeepersMedia, which usually does toy reviews, is claiming the FDA will not provide evidence they have tested candies currently on US shelves that came from China containing milk products during the time of the mass Melamine poisonings.

We are also finding several articles that confirm that candies such as Kit Kat, Snickers, M&Ms, and Cadbury were pulled off of shelves in several Asian nations after reports of Melamine contamination.

Also, the FDA issued a letter on October 10, 2008 which has received very little media exposure and the letter warns US manufacturers to check their products carefully and let the FDA know if they (the companies) decide to do a recall on their products.

    The FDA letter says....

"This letter is intended to ensure that members of the United States food manufacturing industry are aware of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) serious concern about the possibility that foods or food ingredients produced in China and exported to the United States may be contaminated with melamine or its analogues. "

We just wanted to make you aware of this information and provide it to you for you to review. We felt that as parents and grandparents and people that will be handing candy to trusting children tomorrow night, that this information should be considered.

To watch the video that raised the alarm bells, review our discussions on this matter, related articles, and the FDA letter, please proceed to this link.

We felt that as parents, we would want to be aware of these materials and that you might appreciate an opportunity to review them BEFORE Halloween.

    Better safe than sorry.

We hope and pray that you and your family have a safe and happy holiday.

FYI. I checked the Hershey Candy and Mars Candy WEB sites two days ago to see about any recalls of their products. Hershey's site specifically says they buy no milk products whatsoever from China, and none of their products have been recalled. The Mars Candy site acknowledged that many of their products had been taken off the shelf in Indonesia. However, they also stated that all of the products had been sampled and tested twice, and no melamine or other contaminants had been found. The tests were conducted jointly by qualified Mars company personnel and the Indonesian equivalent of our FDA (well, maybe that is not so re-assuring, but I believe the Indonesians are not bought off like our folks). Nevertheless, my understanding is that the Indonesian government, taking no chances, yanked all imported candy made with milk or milk by-products. It is also my understanding that Mars Candy manufactures all products in the US that they distribute here, and do not import Mars products produced in other countries . I gathered that from an article in a local Sunday paper here comparing Hershey and Mars. I suggest folks check the company WEB sites for themselves for any updates or additional information. I used Google and found them easily.

I AGREE WITH W. BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. HALLOWEEN IS UPON US AND THERE IS NOT REALLY TIME TO RESEARCH THIS THOROUGHLY ENOUGH BEFORE THE KIDS GO OUT. BUT I DONT KNOW WHAT ELSE PEOPLE CAN GIVE OUT. AND WHAT ARE PARENTS SUPPOSE TO DO? TAKE THE CANDY FROM THE KIDS? NOT LET THEM GO OUT? OR MAYBE THEY CAN HAVE HALLOWEEN PARTIES AT HOME AND MAKE HOMEMADE CANDY AND COOKIES...CAKES...POPCORN BALLS...AND SO ON.

And to think people stopped making homemade products because of a few nuts who laced them with something.

Now we can't trust wrapped candy either?

There are so many things wrong with this country.

I KNOW. YOU ALMOST CANT LET YOUR KIDS GO OUT FOR HALLOWEEN ANYMORE. THE ONLY ALTERNATIVE I SEE IS TO HAVE PRIVATE HALLOWEEN PARTIES...WHERE PARENTS WHO KNOW EACH OTHER GET TOGETHER AND LET THE KIDS DRESS UP FOR THE PARTY. THEN JUST MAKE ALL THE GOODIES RIGHT THERE. ALL THE PARENTS CAN HELP IN THE PREP AND CLEAN UP.

I think it would be better to throw any stocks of consumable goods that might even remotely be tainted in the trash and start over.

And another thing, IT MIGHT BE A SMART IDEA NOT TO LET OUR ENEMIES MAKE OUR FOOD PRODUCTS!

For years, in CA., parents were required to inspect the candy and throw out anything that looked suspicious, not wrapped, unwrapped, rewrapped or not sealed.
