"Los Angeles protestors riot at LAPD station after police shooting death of immigrant Manuel Jamines"

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets for the second night in a row in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday night to protest the police shooting of a Guatemalan immigrant.

Outraged Angelinos threw rocks, eggs and bottles at a police station, and 22 were arrested, but police said the busts were primarily for failure to disperse and unlawful assembly.

    Shooting/Rioting

The shooting was mentioned in the Long Beach Press Telegram today. It described the suspect as a "Guatemalan immigrant." It said he was warned in both Spanish and English to drop the knife.

    LA Protests

The skirmishes in LA on Sep. 7 were reported online @ http://www.aolnews.com/nation/article/l ... s/19625870 by ABC at about 3 p.m. PDT. The "news" article quickly morphed into an interview with Tom Hayden and then degenerated into a lengthy recounting of the real and imagined sins of the LAPD over the last 50 years. The report really only mentioned the current violence as an introduction to a lengthy propaganda tirade against the police and on behalf of the "oppressed".

    Protests Continue Over Officer-Involved Shooting

More than 20 arrests are reported after a third night of confrontations involving police and protesters

    By JACK NOYES
Updated 8:28 AM PDT, Wed, Sep 8, 2010

About 300 protesters gathered Tuesday night outside the Rampart Community Police Station in Westlake to protest the killing of a man by police over the weekend.

Protesters pelted the police station with eggs, rocks and bottles despite Police Chief Charlie Beck's plea for calm earlier in the day and his promise to thoroughly investigate the shooting. Police reported 22 arrests late Tuesday, mainly for failure to disperse and unlawful assembly, Officer Karen Rayner said.

Most of the action between police squads and protestors went down along West Sixth Street near MacArthur Park. At one point a police skirmish line held protesters at bay in front of Rampart Station.

"Heavy patrols'' were working the Westlake neighborhood around Sixth and Union all day.

LAPD officers have faced off the past three days with people upset over the fatal officer-involved shooting Sunday of Manuel Jamines, 37, a Guatemalan construction worker and father of three.

Officers fired at least two volleys of nonlethal foam projectiles at demonstrators, she said. No injuries to officers or civilians were reported.

Jamines was allegedly drunk and threatening passersby about 1 p.m. Sunday near Sixth and Union. He allegedly ignored orders by Los Angeles police bicycle officers to drop the weapon and instead lunged at them, prompting one of the officers to shoot him, police said.

"This was a very brief moment in time, just 40 seconds between first contact and the time of the shooting," Beck said. "He rushed the officers with a knife so he's controlling the timeframe. Sometimes officers can't create time or distance."

Beck said the timeline was based on preliminary interviews, and the department's Force Investigation Division will conduct an exhaustive probe. The three officers involved in the shooting have been temporarily reassigned during the investigation.

Beck said the officer who shot Jamines had no baton or stun gun with him. He said bicycle officers frequently do not carry the selection of non-lethal weapons found in patrol cars.

Jamines' neighbors described him as being drunk but not dangerous.

"Killing a drunk isn't right," said Jamines' cousin Juan Jaminez, 38, a day laborer. He and others said Jamines was a friendly, hardworking man who liked to drink on the weekends but wasn't violent.

Jamines had a wife and three children -- ages 13, 6 and 8 -- in his hometown of Mazatenango, Guatemala, his cousin said. He came to the United States six years ago to find work as a day laborer and spent most of his time looking for jobs in the parking lot of the Home Depot a block away.

I'm receiving emails claiming that FOX News is reporting this story. The emails claim the story does not mention illegal immigration, or the communist agitators, but one claims FOX said some of protesters are armed.

Can any of you confirm this FOX report and the details?

b]More protests may shake Westlake District[/b]

    Wednesday, September 08, 2010
    By Melissa MacBride

WESTLAKE DISTRICT, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- After a fatal Westlake District police shooting sparked two days of protests, the Los Angeles Police Department is prepared for a third day of demonstrations.

Protesters marched from Sixth Street and Union Avenue, the location of the shooting, up to the Rampart station on Tuesday night, angry over the death of 37-year-old Manuel Jamines.

Sunday, witnesses said Jamines was drunk while walking along a busy strip mall as he threatened pedestrians with a knife. Witnesses flagged down police, who ultimately shot and killed Jamines after he reportedly lunged at officers, knife in hand.

Demonstrators filled the streets two nights in a row and what began as a peaceful march with purpose turned into violence both nights as people started throwing rocks and glass bottles at police officers and lit garbage cans on fire.

Officers in riot gear tried to disperse the crowd initially with verbal warnings. When that didn't work, they fired non-lethal bean bag projectiles. Authorities said 14 people were arrested during Tuesday's protests for inciting a riot and unlawful assembly.

The Westlake District is home to many people from Central America.

Officers who patrol this community are taking the events of the last three days pretty hard.

"The vast majority of Rampart officers are Spanish-speaking officers. They interact with the community on a daily basis," said Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Cory Palka. "The officers involved in the shooting are bicycle officers who were on foot and have a high presence and a high visibility in the community. They're very sensitive and it's very difficult to deal with an issue like this."

"It's not right. Why would you kill an innocent person? Probably he was drunk, but they could have taken the situation professionally," said a protester.

Jamines was a construction worker from Guatemala, where he leaves behind a wife and three children. He has cousins in Los Angeles who are trying to raise money to send his body back to his homeland.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck wants people who witnessed the events leading up to the deadly shooting to contact the Guatemalan Consulate if they don't feel comfortable giving information to police.

In an attempt to repair the relationship between the police and the community, a meeting is planned to discuss the officers' use of force. The meeting aims to provide an opportunity for police to explain the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

One resident who didn't want to be identified said the meeting will be a waste of time, saying that such meetings in the past have not brought about any change.

On the other hand, other residents said the meeting will at least get the dialogue going.

"More people from Guatemala need to stop violence. Don't damage cars, don't damage people. Everybody needs to talk," said another Westlake District resident Gustavo Villatoro.

The community meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at John Leichty Middle School located at 650 South Union Ave. in Los Angeles. The LAPD, L.A. Councilman Ed Reyes, and the consulate generals of Guatemala, Mexico and Nicaragua are expected at the meeting.
