Help House Chairman get signers for letter demanding that Bush enforce immigration laws

HOUSE IMMIGRATION CHAIRMAN HOSTETTLER URGENTLY NEEDS OUR HELP TODAY AND THURSDAY

IN A NUTSHELL: Hostettler has written a tough letter to Bush .... Says no new guestworkers until Bush starts enforcing immigration laws ..... He needs a lot of signatures from other Members of Congress .... That's not likely to happen unless NumbersUSA people ring the phones off the hook and push their own Representatives to sign.

Please call your U.S. Representative and ask him/her to sign Hostettler's letter to the President.

Chairman Hostettler is making an incredibly bold move for the American people. It is intended to grab the President's attention and turn it away from massive new guestworker programs and amnesty and toward the enforcement we all desire.

If you want to stop the President in his misguided trajectory and change the face of the debate this fall, making a phone call in support of Hostettler's letter is the most important action you can take this week.

THE LETTER
TO PRESIDENT BUSH

Frustrated with the Bush Administration's refusal -- just like that of the Clinton Administration -- to enforce immigration laws, U.S. Rep. John Hostettler (R-IN) has prepared a letter demanding that this Administration start obeying the laws Congress has passed.

Click here to read the letter.

Chairman Hostettler's brave partners in writing the letter are Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) who may become Judiciary Chairman in one more year and Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO).

Hostettler was among a parade of Representatives brought into the White House this month to be told what the President wants them to do to push the Bush foreign guestworker program. Instead of being cowed by the power and prestige he encountered in the White House, Hostettler is that rare public servant who sees the public needs first and is fixated on the fact that this Administration has done virtually nothing over its five years to stop illegal immigration even though it has the power and the legislative authority to do so.

THE RACE FOR SIGNATURES

Chairman Hostettler is trying to obtain signatures from as many Members of Congress as possible before they leave town Thursday evening.

To get the President and Karl Rove to pay attention, he needs at least four dozen Members of Congress willing to publicly challenge this Administration's refusal to enforce most immigration laws passed by Congress.

He won't get many without your help.

He, Rep. Smith and Rep. Tancredo will be carrying copies of the letter in their jackets as they wander the floor of the House of Representatives and the hallways of the House office buildings today and tomorrow. They will be stopping most Representatives they encounter, showing them the letter and asking them to sign. If the Representatives have heard that their offices are being bombarded with constituents asking them to sign the letter, they will be much more likely to be interested in talking about the letter.

If the Representatives turn down the opportunity the first time but then hear their phones ringing all day, some of them will call up Hostettler and ask to sign.

We've been through these emergency letter-signing exercises many times in the past. Believe me, incessant phoning will grab the attention of these offices and focus them on whether they really want to leave their names off the letter or sign.

WHAT TO SAY ON THE PHONE

Be short and clear.

By the way, Hostettler is pronounced
"HOE stet' lur".

Use your own phrasing to make these key points (or just make the first point if you don't feel comfortable talking on the phone):

1. I am calling to urge Rep. Xmxmxmx to sign the letter to Pres. Bush that Immigration Chairman Hostettler is carrying with him today.

2. The letter demands that Pres. Bush start enforcing immigration laws.

3. We have 12 million or more illegal aliens in this country because first Pres. Clinton and now Pres. Bush haven't even tried to enforce the laws that Congress has passed.

4. The letter tells Pres. Bush that he should stop talking about guestworker programs until he proves he is capable of enforcing the immigration laws already on the books. If he can't make illegal aliens go back home now, why should anybody believe he will make guestworkers go back home when their visa is over?

5. The letter has to be signed today if Rep. Xmxmxmx is going to get credit for standing on the side of enforcement.

THE LIST OF LAWS THAT PRESIDENT BUSH HAS REFUSED TO IMPLEMENT

Rosemary Jenks, our Director of Government Relations, has just finished a long list of enforcement measures that the Bush Administration has refused to implement.

Many of them are items that Pres. Clinton refused to implement for several years.

The list is truly frightening.

Here is the link to the list.

Earlier this week, we provided this list to many Members of Congress to help them in their quest to re-establish the rule of law within the Bush Administration.

Now, we want you to have use of the list, as well. To view it is to be outraged at the missed opportunity. If the Clinton and Bush Administrations had carried out these laws by their deadlines, I feel confident that our illegal population would be millions smaller and we would not have to listen to all these arrogant news commentators claim that nothing will work in trying to restrain illegal immigration.

The Bush Administration has been unable to do all of the things on the list required by law. But now it is proposing that it will be able to handle millions of additional applications for guestworker jobs and for at least temporary amnesties for millions of illegal aliens while screening all for security and other concerns.

IF YOUR REPRESENTATIVE IS A DEMOCRAT

Appeal to their Partisan instincts to criticize everything Pres. Bush is doing right now inside the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Not only are there questions about how DHS handled the Hurricane Katrina response (through its FEMA department) but the immigratin part of DHS is filled with ineptitude and mismanagement in failing to enforce laws designed to protect our physical security.

The majority of Democrats want an amnesty for illegal aliens but are a little wary of massive guestworker programs.

So, don't talk about amnesties with the Democrats. Just push them to sign this letter to demand that Pres. Bush stop his 5-year failure to enforce immigration laws and protect the jobs and wages of America worker.

IF YOUR REPRESENTATIVE IS A REPUBLICAN

Major news organizations are now reporting that many Republicans are now seeing polling indicating that their political bases will weaken if they don't show a strong image of fighting illegal immigration.

You need to emphasize with Republican Representatives that failure to sign this letter will be used as a sign of their lack of interest in cleaning up the illegal immigration problem.

IF YOU'VE NEVER MADE A CALL TO CONGRESS, PLEASE MAKE THIS YOUR FIRST TIME.

THOUSANDS BEFORE YOU HAVE DISCOVERED ON THE FIRST TIME THAT IT REALLY IS QUITE EASY.

THANKS,

ROY BECK

P.S. You can check to see if your Representative has signed the letter by CLICKING ON THIS LINK. We'll be updating it all today and Thursday as we learn of signatures. Be sure to let us know if you hear from an office that they have signed and we don't have it listed yet.

P.S.S. This is also an opportunity to do some extra education within every single congressional office ... about the need for enforcement ahead of everything else. That's the message we want ringing in their ears this fall. in this email:
