TRUMP ENDORSES HOUSE IMMIGRATION BILLS:

President Donald Trump told House Republicans Tuesday to send him an immigration bill addressing DACA and migrant families separated at the border — “giving GOP leadership what it hopes was the green light it needed to pass legislation that’s infuriated the far right,” POLITICO’s Rachael Bade and John Bresnahan report. “Trump told the GOP Conference during a closed-door meeting that he would accept either of two competing immigration bills slated for a vote this week. Many Republicans said they interpreted his words as support for a measure negotiated among GOP leaders, moderate Republicans, and conservatives. Leaders were to whip votes for the carefully crafted package on Tuesday night.”

The leadership-supported bill, H.R. 6136, includes a path to citizenship for so-called “Dreamers,” a position anathema to conservative Republicans.

But it also includes $25 billion for Trump’s border wall with Mexico, a must-pass priority for the White House before the midterm elections. The president touched on a wide range of topics in his meeting with House GOP members, including North Korea, trade tariffs and opioid legislation, POLITICO’s Jake Sherman tweeted.

Trump also took the opportunity to gloat over the primary loss of Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) to an insurgent challenger after Sanford spoke out against President Trump. (Sanford was not present at the meeting due to delays from inclement weather.)

“It is unclear, however, whether Trump’s words will be enough — especially considering he previously panned the proposal,” Rachael and John write.

“Conservatives are wary of backing a bill that includes a pathway to citizenship for young undocumented immigrants, something they’ve long considered ‘amnesty.’ Still, GOP leaders think the measure could be close to passage with Trump’s support.

The other, more conservative bill is almost certain to fail because moderate Republicans don’t believe it includes a bridge to the legal system.” More here.
