Riyadh: An American media team is working on a $15 million (about Dh55 million) documentary on Saudi Arabia to boost the kingdom's global image in the aftermath of 9/11.

The film covers various religious, social, economic, educational, industrial and cultural aspects of Saudi Arabia, sources in the company said.

"The film, which cost will more than $15 million, is funded by Saudi businessmen and some international establishments operating in the kingdom," an advisor to the company told journalists. The team also visited different regions in Saudi Arabia.

The team's media advisor said the film would showcase "the customs, traditions and culture prevailing in the Saudi society, family bonds and religious and cultural tolerance in the kingdom".

Speaking to reporters yesterday, the media advisor of MacGillivray Freeman Films team noted that due to their keenness to improve the kingdom's image abroad and portray the correct image, Saudi businessmen along with Chevron Corporation and Fluor Company came together to fund the film.

He said the latest technologies will be used in the production of the film which, he added, will take two years.

He pointed out that the company will try its best to combine educational and recreational aspects to appeal to the viewers in the United States and other countries.

The media advisor noted that the idea and information of the film make it relevant for the next 20 years.

Neil Alan, the team's chairman, who is a producer and director of documentary films, said the film's objective is to change the perception about Saudi and Arab societies, particularly after 9/11.

    TEAMWORK

    - It will be produced in five languages

    - The film will be titled Saudi Arabia and will be produced in five languages.

    - The film's team, which includes Greg MacGillivray, President of MacGillivray Freeman Films, his wife Barbara, the team's chief Neil Alan, the company's media advisor Yahya Rafrafwa and Omar Arif representing a Saudi co-producing company, has recently visited different regions of the kingdom.

--The film will be shown in the cinema for six months and after that it will be distributed to television channels.

Every day the most fundamental human rights of people living in Saudi Arabia are violated, yet rarely is this fact publicized. The Saudi Arabian government spares no effort to keep its appalling human rights record a secret, and other governments have shown themselves more than willing to help maintain the secrecy.

Secrecy and fear permeate every aspect of the state structure in Saudi Arabia. There are no political parties, no elections, no independent legislature, no trades unions, no Bar Association, no independent judiciary, no independent human rights organizations. The government allows no international human rights organizations to carry out research in the country and it ignores requests by such organizations for information.

Hey everyone.....go out and buy Chevron gas to help pay for this!!!!
