Chamber comes out against Metro ‘anti’ immigration plans
By Jared Allen, jallen@nashvillecitypaper.com
November 21, 2006
Voicing strong opposition to a group of hotly debated immigration bills, The Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, along with its new president, Ralph Schulz, has waded into the Metro Council immigration fray.
The Chamber announced that its Executive Committee unanimously passed a resolution opposing three immigrant-related legislative measures being considered by the Council – an English-first ordinance, a bill to hold landlords responsible for knowingly renting to illegal immigrants, and one that would punish businesses that hire illegal immigrants.
According to the Chamber, the bills “would negatively impact economic development, position Nashville as non-inclusive and unwelcoming to immigrants, pose enforcement challenges and prove costly for Metro should it be required to defend the constitutionality of such ordinances.“
The bills are scheduled to be heard on second reading at tonight’s Metro City Council meeting.
“Current federal immigration law already contains civic penalties for hiring and harboring undocumented workers. Making a public statement locally is unnecessary and would have a direct and negative effect on Nashville’s ability to attract and retain companies that have a multi-ethnic workforce or customer base,” Schultz said in a Chamber press release.
Councilman Eric Crafton, the sponsor of the English-first ordinance, fired back at the Chamber.
“Well, 90 percent of the citizens of Nashville don’t agree with them,” Crafton said, referring to what he said is strong support for his bill. “I don’t think they have one bit of influence over council votes. In fact, I think they’re very non-influential.”
Crafton said the Chamber does a “very poor” job of promoting economic development for Nashville.
“Whereas the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau promotes strictly Davidson County,” he said. “They have done a wonderful job in recruiting business, where as the Chamber of Commerce hasn’t. They’re preoccupied with promoting the interests of other counties, not Davidson.”
Councilman Mike Jameson, an opponent of all three proposals, said Crafton was misguided in attacking the Chamber.
“He’s taken the unfortunate step of vilifying those who disagree with his proposals,” Jameson said.
Jameson added he is “very grateful” for the Chamber’s position.
“I think it opens up a lot of eyes of those in the business community who might otherwise be tempted to lean toward legislation that resembles this,” he said. “It may make them realize how detrimental this tone is to Nashville, and for a business community that’s striving to be more international.”Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at https://eepurl.com/cktGTn
