On Monday, local police officers and agents with the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Alexander Oregon Gallardo, 18. A day earlier, he took a shot at a Wake County Deputy during a high speed chase through the streets of Raleigh, according to court documents.

Around 8:45 p.m. Sunday, Deputy Unberto Espinoza attempted to pull over a speeding car on New Hope Road, a vehicle driven by Carlos Eduardo Argueta Diaz. However, the driver had other ideas.

Finally, the chase ended at the intersection of Lake Woodard and Terminal Drives, when Diaz crashed. The car turned out to be stolen.

During that chase, a bullet came through the windshield of Deputy Espinoza’s cruiser, barely missing him and hitting instead a radar device mounted just to left of the steering wheel.

That bullet was reportedly fired by Gallardo.

Despite the danger, Deputy Espinoza escaped injury.

Diaz and two juveniles were taken into custody at the scene, but Gallardo escaped, only to be captured the next day.

Gallardo has been charged with attempted murder, possession of a stolen vehicle, assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, discharging a weapon into a moving vehicle and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is currently being held at the Wake County Detention Center on an ICE detainer.

Gallardo is a member of the notoriously violent 18th Street Gang. At the time of his arrest, he was in violation of his probation, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

In Feb. 2013, Gallardo was convicted of breaking and entering as well as larceny.
During his initial court appearance, Gallardo could clearly be seen flashing gang signs in front of the courtroom. His next court date is Dec. 18.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A man accused of shooting at a Wake County sheriff's deputy during a high-speed chase remained behind bars Tuesday afternoon, and his father and sister were also jailed for allegedly helping him flee from authorities.

Alexander Oregon Gallardo, 18, of 2008 W. Millbrook Road was in the Wake County Detention Center under a $3.9 million secured bond on felony charges of attempted murder, possession of a stolen vehicle, assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, discharging a weapon into a moving vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Investigators say Gallardo shot at Deputy Unberto Espinoza who tried to stop a stolen car that was speeding on New Hope Road around 8:45 p.m. Sunday.

The car's driver, Carlos Eduardo Argueta Diaz, allegedly led Espinoza on a chase through Raleigh – with speeds up to 15 mph in excess of the speed limit – from New Hope Road to Interstate 440 before crashing the car near the intersection of Lake Woodard and Terminal drives, according to court records.

Sheriff Donnie Harrison said Monday that Gallardo, during the chase, fired a bullet into Espinoza's windshield, hitting a radar device mounted just left of the steering wheel.

Espinoza was not injured.

Diaz and two juveniles who were in the car at the time were taken into custody after the crash, but it wasn't until after a manhunt that Raleigh police and the U.S. Marshals Service Monday afternoon found Gallardo.

Gallardo's father, Froilan Mercado Gallardo, 45, also of 2008 W. Millbrook Road, and sister, Lydia Mejia Gallardo, 23, of 5710 Oak Meadow Lane, Raleigh, were also arrested Monday on a felony charge of accessory after the fact

Family friend Cynthia Flores said Tuesday that Froilan Gallardo and Lydia Gallardo were only trying to get him safely to authorities when they were pulled over and arrested.

"They did tell him that they were going to help him, but their intention was to turn him in," Flores said.

Family members say they were worried what would happen if they called police, so they planned to take him to jail themselves.
Diaz was jailed Tuesday under an immigration detainer on a $2 million secured bond, and two other people were jailed for their alleged roles in the case.

Arrest warrants show that Diaz, 16, of 4650 Ravi Road, Raleigh, faces felony charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, fleeing/eluding arrest with a motor vehicle and two counts of accessory after the fact.

Alexander Gallardo, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, is an absconder from probation – a sentence stemming from a February 2013 conviction of charges of breaking and entering and larceny.

An immigration detainer was not included with his arrest records, and the immigration statuses of Froilan Gallardo and Lydia Gallardo were not immediately clear Tuesday.

RALEIGH, N.C. -The mother of an 18-year-old who is charged with attempting to murder a Wake County sheriff's deputy says she is heartbroken that he's in jail, but believes he is safe now that he's not on the streets.

Alexander Oregon Gallardo was arrested Monday afternoon following a nearly 18-hour manhunt that began when investigators said he shot at a deputy from a stolen car.

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said the bullet struck the deputy's dashboard radar unit, which Harrison said saved the deputy's life.

"It could have easily hit his heart, armor whatever it may be," Harrison said of the shooting Sunday night. "It was a very close call -- God was with him."

Gallardo made his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon on charges of attempted murder, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, assaulting a law enforcement officer with a firearm, discharging a weapon into a moving vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon. The judge ordered him held on a $3.9 million bond.

As he was escorted out, two whistles came from the back of the courtroom and Gallardo looked back in acknowledgment. The judge ordered those in attendance to "be quiet" and "behave" or leave the courtroom.

Gallardo mother, Leticia Gallardo, said that while she is heartbroken that her son was arrested, she said "he's safer in jail than on streets."

Speaking through her sister-in-law Cynthia Flores, Leticia Gallardo, who speaks only Spanish, said Alexander Gallardo is a member of the 18th Street gang, a primarily Hispanic street gangs.. She said that she feared that her son, who she said was the main provider for their home, may have been killed if he remained on the street

"They rather have him in jail than on the streets," Flores said. "I guess the gang people that he doesn't get along with have tried to shoot him. And there have been cases where they came into our homes and shot up our homes looking for him."

Alexander Gallardo's arrest came after a vehicle he was in was stopped by deputies in the 1400 Block of Rock Quarry Road. His father, Froilan Gallardo-Mercado, and half-sister, Lydia Sanchez, were also arrested during the stop on charges of accessory after the fact.

Leticia Gallardo said the two were taking Alexander Gallardo to turn himself in when their vehicle was stopped. But angry at his father, she said Alexander Gallardo told the deputies that they were helping him flee.

"The plan was to get him in a car and turn him in," Flores said. "But they were following the dad, and not even five minutes later they pulled him over."

His mother said it wasn't the first time relatives had turned Alexander Gallardo in to police. She said he was first arrested when he was 12 years old for breaking windows, and he's been in and out of jail ever since. When he was 15, she said he shot someone in their leg.

According to Wake County arrest records, Alexander Gallardo was previously charged in September 2012 with second-degree trespass. Just four days later, he was charged with felony breaking and entering. In December of that year, he was arrested twice -- once for resisting a public officer, and then again for failure to appear on the breaking and entering charge.

Then in 2013, he was arrested in January and again in August. During the January arrest, he was charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, and failure to appear on the second-degree trespassing charge. And in August, he was charged with second-degree burglary, felony breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, and resisting a public officer.

In addition to his most recent charges, Harrison said Alexander Gallardo is also an absconder from justice and was wanted for probation violations.

Leticia Gallardo said she tried to get help for him for years when he first started to get into trouble. But she said no one wanted to help her reign her son in.

"She says -- as a mother -- it hurts to see him going through this," Flores said.
