Evangelical Leaders Shrug At Donald Trump’s Lewd Comments

Evangelical Leaders Shrug At Donald Trump’s Lewd Comments

The fact that Donald Trump said in 2005 that he could grab women “by the pussy” because he’s famous doesn’t seem to be changing how social conservative leaders feel about him.

Evangelicals who opposed him before still aren’t fans. And the ones in his camp aren’t phased by the recording. That’s because this isn’t about how much they like the brash billionaire; it’s about how unflinching they are in their opposition to Hillary Clinton.

“People of faith are voting on issues like who will protect unborn life, defund Planned Parenthood, defend religious liberty and oppose the Iran nuclear deal,” said Ralph Reed, who heads the Faith & Freedom Coalition. “A ten-year-old tape of a private conversation with a talk show host ranks low on their hierarchy of concerns.”

Robert Jeffress, the pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas and a member of Trump’s Evangelical Executive Advisory Board, said the comments were “lewd, offensive, and indefensible.”

But, he added, he’s still voting Trump. He said he moderated a meeting between the candidate and Evangelical and Catholic leaders, and he was forthright about his hesitations about Trump’s moral

“I said at that time, with Trump sitting next to me, I would not necessarily choose this man to be my child’s Sunday School teacher,” Jeffress said. “But that’s not what this election is about.”

He added that he doesn’t think Hillary Clinton is morally superior to Trump.

“Here is a woman who lied to the families of the Benghazi victims, she destroyed 33,000 emails while under subpoena, and she’s attacked the women who attacked her husband,” he said. “The fact is we’re all sinners, we all need forgiveness, and God doesn’t grade people according to their level of sin.”

And David Bozell, a Roman Catholic who heads the conservative group ForAmerica and supports Trump, said the audio won’t change how conservative voters view the candidate.

“Bill Clinton’s history of being a sexual predator, including affairs with interns, dwarfs any locker room banter,” he said. “The clip is unfortunate, but then again, we’re not electing saints in November.”

Meanwhile, Russell Moore, who heads the Southern Baptist Commission’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, tweeted out that the audio undergirds his long-held concerns about Trump. And he posted a statement he’d released more than a year ago explaining his opposition to Trump.

“In the 1990s, some of these social conservatives argued that ‘If Bill Clinton’s wife can’t trust him, neither can we,’” Moore wrote in that statement. “If character matters, character matters. Today’s evangelicals should ask, ‘Whatever happened to our commitment to ‘traditional family values’?”

Trump won white Evangelicals comfortably in the Republican primaries, according to NBC News exit polling. And a Pew Research survey from July found that 78 percent of white Evangelical voters back him, and noted that his support with that cohort was stronger than Mitt Romney’s was at that point in the 2012 race.

After all, Evangelicals have forgiven Trump for bragging about sleeping with married women, cheating on his own wife, and appearing on the cover of Playboy.

The comments Trump made are gross, as his social conservative backers concede. But, to these Evangelicals, “grab them by the pussy” doesn’t sound quite as bad as “President Hillary Clinton.”

Thank you Evangelical leaders!! Thank you very very much!!

    STAY TRUE!! STAY TRUMP!!

I love Jeffress and my opinion of Ralph Reed shot up from a 4 to a 10, even though I'm on opposite sides of both of them on a couple of issues.

    And David Bozell, too!!

These men understand honor, loyalty and priorities. These are men who will watch your back and you could share a fox-hole with.

Chaffetz? Ryan? Mike Lee? Goveror of Utah Herbert? All cut and run cowards who wouldn't only leave you alone in your fox-hole they'd steal your weapon on their way out of Dodge.

As Trump said, bill clinton said much worse to him on the golf course. And of course, once again the media will spin this to death while all the clinton misdeeds are hushed.

Donald Trump is a NEW YORKER - the fastest town in America, no slowness there except for rush hour traffic.

Donald Trump is an aggressive male which can be a good thing, he won't back down, won't be pushed around, knows how to wheel and deal.

Donal Trump is rich and traveled the "jet setter" life - he has evolved into a family man. Happens with maturity to many men, some sooner than later.

Women do throw themselves at men for various reasons and he possesses several of them - celebrity, rich, good looking, successful. He also possesses a statesmen and patriot mindset and would be the best thing that could happen to USA at this point and time. Americans love him, look at the rally attendance numbers. hillary can't even fill a small room - pitiful. She is a big DRAG!

Evangelical Leaders Forgive Mr. Trump – Will Stand with Trump Against Wicked Hillary

    Jim Hoft Oct 8th, 2016 6:24 pm

Evangelicals spoke out today offering forgiveness to the outspoken billionaire.

The Christian leaders will stand with Trump against the wicked Hillary Clinton.

    Reuters reported:

Leaders of religious conservative groups largely stood behind Donald Trump on Saturday, the day after vulgar sexual comments he made about women surfaced online, but some expressed concern that the U.S. Republican presidential nominee’s remarks could depress evangelical turnout on Election Day.

Most evangelical leaders did not condemn Trump, and instead pointed to an urgent need to prevent Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton from winning the presidency, reshaping the Supreme Court and implementing liberal policies.

The latest blow to Trump’s campaign came after a 2005 video surfaced of the then-reality TV star talking on an open microphone about groping women and trying to seduce a married woman. Vice presidential running mate Mike Pence said he could not defend Trump’s words.

Gary Bauer, chairman of the Campaign for Working Families, said Trump’s “grossly inappropriate language” does not change the choice facing the country in the Nov. 8 election and that “I continue to support the Trump-Pence ticket.”

“Hillary Clinton is committed to enacting policies that will erode religious liberty, promote abortion, make our country less safe, and leave our borders unprotected,” Bauer said.

White evangelicals make up about 20 percent of the U.S. population, according to the Public Religion Research Institute, and represent a crucial voting bloc Trump needs to win the presidency.

They have long represented a pillar of support for Republicans. In 2004, they were instrumental in President George W. Bush’s re-election. They turned out in similar numbers in 2008 and 2012, when Mitt Romney, a Mormon who many evangelicals considered too moderate, was the Republican nominee, according to a report by the Pew Research Center.

Support from evangelicals for Trump has been strong throughout his campaign, even though it was only late in life that the New York businessman adopted their cause. Social conservatives flocked to his side over other deeply religious Republican presidential candidates, such as Ted Cruz.
