    Secession madness! Now 40 states join petition fray

    More than a half-million want their states out of the USA

    If any of the hundreds of thousands of people petitioning the White House in the blossoming battle over secession get their way, somebody is going to leave the union, either voluntarily … or involuntarily.

    Ever since WND first reported that residents in the state of Louisiana had filed an online petition with the White House to secede from the U.S., residents in at least 39 additional states have filed similar requests with the White House to peaceably break from the union.

    What’s more, a pair of contrary petitions have been added to the White House website, including one to “strip the citizenship” of those who have petitioned for secession and another calling for their deportation.

    As WND reported, the first of the petitions was filed on the White House’s We the People website the day after the 2012 election by Michael E. (full last name not provided) of Slidell, La.

    Since then, residents from the following states have added their own secession petitions: New Hampshire, Illinois, Idaho, Rhode Island, Virginia, Wisconsin, Alaska, Utah, Wyoming, California, Delaware, Nevada, Kansas, Ohio, South Dakota, West Virginia, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Oklahoma, Arkansas, South Carolina, Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, Michigan, New York, Colorado, Oregon, New Jersey, North Dakota, Montana, Indiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, Florida, North Carolina, Alabama and Texas.

    The White House website explains that once a petition reaches 25,000 signatures, it will be placed on a queue for response from the administration. The website also maintains a page for previous petitions that have received a White House response.

    Some of the petitions have easily exceeded the required threshold.

    The Texas petition, for example, has more than 80,000 signatures. The original Louisiana petition has topped 30,000. Florida has also crossed the threshold. Though the numbers keep climbing, the signatures for all 40 states now total at least 533,000.

    The two petitions calling for the secession-sympathizers to be ousted total just more than 10,000.

    The original Louisiana petition, which has served as a pattern for many of the new states, reads as follows: “We petition the Obama administration to: Peacefully grant the State of Louisiana to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.”

    It continues, “As the Founding Fathers of the United States of America made clear in the Declaration of Independence in 1776: ‘When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.’”

    The petition concludes with a further quote from the Declaration of Independence: “‘Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and institute new Government.’”

    Residents of other states, however, have chosen different wording.

    The Texas petition explains itself this way: “The U.S. continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government’s neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the U.S. suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it’s citizens’ standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our Founding Fathers, which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.”
    A petitioner from Tillamook, Ore., identified by the site as Kristopher W, worded his state’s petition this way: “Allow Oregon to vote on and leave the union peacefully and remain an ally to the nation.”

    He continues, “With the federal government increasing its size much larger than our Founding Father’s intended, and its abuse of power trumping over the rights of state constitutions, and the forcing of unconstitutional laws over its own citizens, the people of Oregon would like the chance to vote on leaving the Union immediately. The federal government has imposed policies on Oregon that are not in Oregon’s best interests, and we as citizens would respectively and peaceably separate ourselves from a tyrannical government who cares nothing about creating a sustainable future for our children. At any time that the citizens of Oregon [should feel] the federal government was no longer imposing on the Constitution, we could re-vote to again join the union under a new agreement.”

    One of the contrary petitions reads this way: “Strip the Citizenship from Everyone who Signed a Petition to Secede and Exile Them.”

    It continues, “Mr. President, please sign an executive order such that each American citizen who signed a petition from any state to secede from the USA shall have their citizenship stripped and be peacefully deported.”

    The White House created the “We the People” petition site ostensibly as a way of giving all Americans “a way to engage their government on the issues that matter to them.”

    “The right to petition your government is guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution,” the page reads. “We the People provides a new way to petition the Obama Administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country. We created We the People because we want to hear from you. If a petition gets enough support, White House staff will review it, ensure it’s sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response.”

    The page also explains, “You have just 30 days to get 25,000 signatures in order to get a response from the White House.”

    Once the White House does draft a response, it has pledged to send it via email to everyone who has signed the petition (registration on the site with a valid email address is required to sign petitions).

    To Secede or to Deport? The Battle of the Petitions

    Petitions to Secede have been flooding the White House Website. In the meantime, some new petitions are asking that anyone who signs such a petition be deported.

    As reported by the Daily Caller, 49 of the 50 States in America have residents who have posted their petitions on the site. Vermont is the only state without a petition. Probably not for long.

    As could be expected in a highly polarized America, a backlash has formed against the petitioners and new petitions have been also posted, asking the president to deport those who sign secession petitions.

    One such petition reads, in part, "please sign an executive order such that each American citizen who signed a petition from any state to secede from the USA shall have their citizenship stripped and be peacefully deported." Just a guess, but the author does not think that those who seek to remove themselves from the ridiculously wasteful and growing federal government have deportation in mind.

    One of the states with the most signatures for secession is Texas, of course. However, the Governor of Texas didn't seem too keen on the idea. His press secretary released the following statement:
    Gov. Perry believes in the greatness of our Union and nothing should be done to change it. But he also shares the frustrations many Americans have with our federal government.

    A petition for Texas secession has qualified to receive a White House response.
    As of Tuesday evening, the petition -- which asks for the peaceful withdrawal of the state of Texas from the union -- had racked up more than 81,000 signatures. (Only 25,000 are needed to elicit an official response from the Obama administration.)

    According to Politico, the leader of the Texas secession movement said the president's reelection last week was a “catalyzing moment for his organization’s efforts to quit the United States."

    “I am completely aware that Election Day was a catalyzing moment, but I do not believe that the underpinnings of this are solely about Barack Obama,” Daniel Miller, president of the Texas Nationalist Movement told the political news website. “This cake has been baking for a long time -- it’s the Obama administration that put the candles on the cake and lit it for us.”

    The Texas petition reads:
    Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it's citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.
    The support for the petition has surged in the last couple of days despite Texas Gov. Rick Perry's calls to support the union.

    On Monday, The Huffington Post reported that the governor's press secretary, Catherine Frazier, said that Perry "believes in the greatness of our Union and nothing should be done to change it." Frazier added, however, that the governor "also shares the frustrations many Americans have with our federal government."

    The Lone Star State is not exactly alone in its sentiments.

    As an earlier Huffington Post report notes, residents in more than 40 states have filed secession petitions to the Obama administration's "We the People" program, which is featured on the White House website, in the last few days.

    Though none has come even close to Texas' number, many petitions -- including those of Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Tennessee -- have attracted more than 20,000 supporters. Louisiana's petition has garnered more than 30,000 signatures.

    “As the economy worsened, people began to ask, ‘What if? Why do we need the middle man? Do we believe that we should have more layers of government than we absolutely need? Could Texas govern itself?’ I think really that self-determination is kind of the underpinning to all of this -- the ability to provide Texas solutions to Texas problems,” Miller told Politico of the state's aspirations for independence.

    Miller has not been the only vocal and visible proponent of a Texas secession. Last week, Peter Morrison, a Texas GOP official, called for an "amicable divorce" from the United States.

    "Why should Vermont and Texas live under the same government?" Morrison, a treasurer of the Hardin County Republican Party, wrote in a post-election edition of his Tea Party newsletter. "Let each go her own way."

    Morrison went on to express exasperation at the "maggots" who backed Obama, specifically accusing non-white voters of voting for the president on an "ethnic basis."
    Despite the loud calls for Texas independence, however, the Daily Caller notes that not all Texans are too keen to secede from the U.S.

    On Monday, “Caleb M” from Austin, Texas, launched a "We the People" petition of his own, asking the Obama administration to peacefully grant the city of Austin permission to "withdraw from the state of Texas" and to remain part of the United States.

    The petition has about 1,400 signatures so far.

    As Robert Wilonsky at The Dallas Morning News noted on Monday, however, it seems that no matter how much support Texas' secession petition gets, the state's bid for independence is likely not on the cards.

    White House Forced to Confront State Petitions to Secede? (Updated)

    The White House website has been bombarded with petitions that have mushroomed to 34 states moving to secede. The first petition came in from Louisiana the day after Obama's re-election, and since then a chorus of others have issued their grievances.

    Now, under White House rules stated in its "We the People" program, if 25,000 people sign on by December 7th, a response must be issued. Just a few days after submitting, that number has been reached by the petitions from Texas, Louisiana, and Georgia -- with Texas closing in on 90,000.

    Will the White House respond, or ignore the will of the people as it routinely does on the issues that matter most? One Florida resident is making national news; former Navy serviceman, Philip Hoezel, who turned his flag upside down in protest on Veterans Day.

    While his neighbors berated him for the blasphemy, and for "hurting a lot of people's feelings;" as a Navy man he would know that the traditional significance of the upside-down flag is to indicate a ship in its final moments of severe distress before it sinks -- a ship of state, for instance. It is a form of peaceful protest that is increasing in numbers and is a statement as symbolic as these petitions.

    If Texas was not part of the U.S. all federal agents would have to be removed from the border and Texas would have to pay for all of it's own border protection.

    States that withdraw from the union would no longer have the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force or Coast Guard to defend them. They would be on their own to defend against the invasion by Mexican cartels.

    Texas Gov. Rick Perry has one message for the tens of thousands of Texans calling for secession from the United States: The state will not secede.

    More than 76,000 people have signed a petition on the “We the People” White House website for Texas to withdraw from the Union and start a new government after President Barack Obama was re-elected.
