5 New Year’s Resolutions for Trump, Clinton and Other 2016 Campaigns

5 New Year’s Resolutions for Trump, Clinton and Other 2016 Campaigns

    By Matthew J. Dowd

As new year’s approaches, many will make resolutions about what they want to do differently in 2016. Some may say exercise more, or eat less, or work more, or work less, or resolve to be more kind (as the song says).

To the end of trying to lift a cup of kindness, I would like to offer some political resolutions for leaders on both sides. And before folks jump me for helping one side or the other, I’d like to be clear: I say these things not because I want a particular person to win but with the thought of what might actually be helpful to each.

Here are my five suggestions for the political journey ahead in 2016:

    1. Donald Trump should do some paid ads starting right after the first of the year. He should release a new ad every four or five days, with each focusing on an area of policy he wants to accomplish as president to make America a better place. This would fill in the blanks that many voters still have of him and help take him from a popular reality-TV star with lots of one-liners and a slogan to someone Americans might see as a leader, not just an entertainer. He might also consider reading a few books, and brush up on what a president can legally do. (This resolution might be harder for him to keep–or make–than many of us have in losing that last 10 pounds.)

    2. Hillary Clinton should resolve to run this race on her own in an authentic, genuine way. Leave Bill Clinton at home (or homes). Although he is very popular among Democrats and many independents, he reminds folks that Hillary Clinton is a candidate of the 1990s. The country wants to vote the future, not the past. His appearance on the trail also unearths many of the scandals from 20 years ago. And when he came out to help his wife in 2008, he wasn’t really an asset. He hurt her campaign a number of times in her close primary race against then-Sen. Barack Obama. Hillary Clinton needs to do this on her own, and show the side of her that people see in private but that closes off when she gets in front of TV cameras. (She also might try to realize that Bernie Sanders isn’t her enemy but may be helping to point a way to needed reforms.)

    3. If GOP leaders in the Senate and House are really that worried that Donald Trump may be the nominee and lose badly against Hillary Clinton next fall, and Republicans might lose their hold on the levers of power to the Democrats, find someone to run as a third-party candidate. Congressional Republican candidates would be much better positioned if Mrs. Clinton wins with a margin in the forties, with folks splitting their votes at the top of the ticket and then looking down ballot in a discerning way. Hillary Clinton racking up a large margin at the top of the ticket in a one-on-one race against Donald Trump puts GOP congressional candidates in a very precarious position.

    4. Jeb Bush, it is time to hang up your cleats. Jeb is a decent man and was an effective governor, and some of his staff are good people–but he is the wrong candidate at the wrong time running in the wrong way. What point does it make for him to finish outside the top three in Iowa and New Hampshire after spending $100 million? Why not drop out now and use his remaining money to define what he believes the GOP stands for and should be as a party? It takes strength to look in the mirror and acknowledge reality. Dropping out now would be a much bigger contribution to his legacy than finishing poorly in the contests ahead.

    5. It is time for Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee, Carly Fiorina, Rand Paul, and others polling badly to call it quits. Deep down they and most of their limited supporters know what all the rest of us know: that they can’t win. Do a little self-reflection on New Year’s Eve, and ask yourself why you are running if you know you aren’t going to make it to the finish line. Is it ego? Fear of disappointment? Desire to keep your name in the stories? All are very human reactions, but none is as laudable as the self-respect it takes to admit you won’t be president.

As for the media, let us try to examine our motivations for what we say and do, and how we cover this race. Let us pursue the truth and not pass along select information that supports one tribe over another. Let’s move away from the endless stories on tactics and look at this race in a much broader way. And let us resolve to do our part in not pushing divisive stories and contributing to the polarization of the country.

And please, everyone, pray that I am able to keep my own resolutions (as well as losing that last 10 pounds).

    1. I agree with his advice to Trump on the ads. And Trump already announced today that he would start running ads in January.

    2. That's good advice to Hillary Clinton, but no matter how hard you hold your nose and look the other way, the stench of the Clinton Administration will be right thee in the poll booth, because it's not going away because truth never does.

    3. This is a good revealer about the real intentions of members of Congress, looking out for themselves, fearing something Trump does to fix our country will impact their own careers in Congress exposing what they should have already done but chose not to do. Scoundrels all.

    4. Yes, Jeb should hang up his "cleats", if he had any. He played tennis and never wore cleats.

    5. Yes, it's time for all polling badly to get out of the race. Yes, it's all personal career aspirations instead of love of country, that keep them in. Enough reason to do what we need to do and say to compel them to exit.

    6. Yes, please God. Some honesty and accuracy in journalism and reporting about the Truth, so yes,we need this. Your free press rights have been protected by Americans many who lost their lives and limbs in the process so you could say anything you want, but it was most certainly based on the truth to give US the information we need to be good citizens who are truthfully informed about our government.
