Monday, February 15th, marks five years since the death of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent Jaime Zapata. Sunday evening a mass was held in his honor.
Family, friends, and members of the community attended the mass held at Saint Frances Cabrini Church. Agent Jaime Zapata was killed February 15, 2011 by members of the Zetas Mexican Drug Cartel. Zapata and another agent were traveling along a highway in San Luis Potosi when they were surrounded and attacked by hit squads. Friends of Jaime Zapata organized the mass to remember the agent's life.
Director of Friends of Jaime Zapata, Rosie Gregory, says, "This is a reminder to all law enforcement that you do make a difference in crime, and also to remember the brotherhood that they share as officers and the risk that they take."
Those who attended wore a blue ribbon with a dove to honor Zapata's memory.
