    Trump drastically different

    [February 22, 2016] 2 hrs ago

These are not ordinary times. Therefore, we don't need an ordinary president.

Donald Trump is drastically different. He's blunt and tackles issues head on instead of nibbling at them on the edges. He'll treat our enemies the same way. He'll be forceful against them instead of using the "pin pricks" preferred by the current commander in chief.

People need to hear the unfiltered truth about the issues confronting America. We've been fed the party line for decades. What did that get us? Just a mountainous pile of lies and a bigger pile of debt.

Career politicians have failed America at every turn. They have proven they can't fix anything. Illegal immigration, the national debt, Social Security's questionable future and energy concerns have been discussed in Washington ad nauseum for generations. It's been all talk and no action.

I would love to have a president with a record of success who speaks from the heart and shoots from the hip over one whose every move is shaped and massaged by handlers and lobbyists.

Trump is a rich man who speaks like a poor man. He knows illegal immigrants are taking jobs that ought to go to law-abiding Americans who have been standing in unemployment lines for months or years.

A majority of Americans is rightfully disgusted with the Republican and Democrat parties and their slate of candidates. I suggest everyone give Trump, who isn't beholden to anyone, serious consideration on March 1.

    POPE AND TRUMP

    Pope crossed a line

As a practicing Catholic, I take exception to Pope Francis injecting his views into our presidential campaign.

He made the comment that anyone who wants to build a wall rather than a bridge is not a Christian. Obviously he was referring to Donald Trump wanting to build a wall at our border with Mexico to keep out illegal immigrants.

The fact that 11 million illegal immigrants have already entered our country, and President Barack Obama refuses to deport all of them, shows what happens when you have an open border.

We as a nation are not responsible for taking care of any impoverished people who happen to enter our country illegally. Our first responsibility is to take care of our own people.

And illegals are a direct insult to the immigrants who went through the legal immigration process.

If Pope Francis is truly concerned about the plight of the world’s impoverished people, I have a suggestion:

Let the Vatican sell some of its vast expensive assets and donate the proceeds to refugee resettlement. I think Christ would second this motion.

    Mexico responsible for itself

I wonder why Mexico has not taken better care of its people? Is it because the people in power are so corrupt that they don’t care about anyone or anything except themselves?

The nation, primarily Catholic, is made up of good people, but they allow the politicians that govern them to keep them uneducated, poor and unemployed.

A large country without large manufacturing companies cannot keep families together.

So, a breakdown occurs and leaves the people with little opportunity to grow and prosper. They want to work. So they come to the United States to earn a modest living and we citizens end up paying for their welfare.

Mexico, not the U.S., should be responsible for its people.

The influx of immigrants into the U.S. will continue unless we, as Americans, force Mexico to pay for the care of these families. It should be their responsibility. I truly believe this.

Letters: Pope should stick to matters of faith

    Feb. 22, 2016 Updated 12:00 a.m.

    By ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Thank you, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, aka Pope Francis, for reconfirming my choice to no longer consider myself Catholic. By weighing in on the politics of my country, in questioning whether Donald Trump is a Christian for his statement that, as president, he would see to the deportation of criminals, aka foreigners who have violated the laws of our country by entering it illegally or overstaying their visas, plus building a wall along our border with Mexico. We’ll just forget the separation of church and state and that the chief duty of the president is the protection and security of American citizens.

The church I now choose to attend not only preaches the Word, but also doesn’t preach politics from the pulpit or condemn me for voting against those who would lessen our border security, much less for participating in the Minuteman Movement to secure that border.

While Francis was in Mexico, he should have asked officials how many illegal immigrants they have permitted to stay in their country, much less gain citizenship and avail themselves of taxpayer-funded benefits of health, welfare and education.

The pope says Donald Trump isn’t Christian because he wants to build a wall along the Mexican border. Maybe the pope should look closer to home. The Vatican is surrounded by huge walls and has about $8 billion in the bank, but that doesn’t stop it from asking poor people for money when the collection plate comes around. Another faith full of hypocrites.

    Who should pay?

With immigration being huge this election year, I wish to indulge upon an event that I experienced this month. I had received a two-week jury duty notice and upon eluding the first week got chosen for the second week.

There was an estimated 35 potential jurors that entered the courtroom for the selection process. As the judge starting asking questions I took notice that the defendant had one public defender and two translators as his council. Many questions were asked and most were answered with purity but I had to take notice when one of the potential jurors asked the judge this question.

“Is the defendant a U.S. citizen” only to be told his question could not be answered. Now at this point I felt obligated to raise my card and rephrase this question. I presented this question to the judge “does the defendant pay taxes to the United States of America.” Again the question was met with the same response “that question cannot be answered,” so I informed the judge at this point I cannot be unbiased given the visual data of two court appointed translators one public defendant.

I also informed the judge if the defendant is an illegal he should be deported. I am fully aware every person should have the right to a fair trial but here’s where it should change, if you are not a tax paying member of this nation and you request a jury trial you should have to pay for it. These costs should not be the community’s burden.

    American jobs

EDITOR: Stephen Ruffino (“A nation of immigrants,” Letters, Feb. 9) forgets that we are a nation of immigrants whose ancestors came here legally.

He also thinks Americans won’t do jobs that illegal immigrants do. My family members have been motel maids and dishwashers and cleaned floors. Just pay people decent wages. As for vineyard work, modern machinery can do some of that. What about construction jobs? Many would love to have that good-paying job.

The government needs to crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants. And we, the public, unless physically unable, need to start doing our own yard work and housework. Or pay more to have an American do it.

In addition, birthright citizenship should be eliminated unless at least one parent is here legally. That includes the birthing tourism business.

Ruffino wants us to appreciate what illegal immigrants “do for us.” Like take jobs? Cost us billions in fraudulent tax returns, especially with all the child tax credits? The government benefits and subsidies they receive (which some U.S. citizens don’t)? Sorry, I don’t appreciate any of that.

But let’s all be politically correct and sing “Kumbaya” as we watch our country go down the drain.

Letter to the Editor: Invasion and Betrayal

    By Diana Thorn |
    Published on 02.20.2016 7:00 a.m.

Are Americans being betrayed by Pres. Obama and anyone who goes along with his immigration policies?

Recently, the Obama administration ordered U.S. Customs and Border agents to stand down by not processing illegal immigration. Illegals will no longer be required to appear in court, reveal their whereabouts and aerial surveillance will be cut in half.

Today, there is an influx of Central Americans and Cubans into the U.S.. Over 100 Cubans are rubber-stamped per day and told to sign up for work permits, medicaid, and food stamps. No wonder average Americans are angry.

Middle Eastern immigration is another big problem. Obama is forcing us to accept Islamic refugees. Never mind that radical Islamic terrorists have infiltrated refugee camps and want to kill Americans. A Channel 2 Action News investigation has revealed a spike in illegals from terrorist nations.

Pres. Obama's actions concerning Islamic terrorism have been alarming. He won't define radical Islam, he has dismantled counter-terrorism programs, scrubbed ties / jihad activities from the records of Muslims and eased visas from terror hotspots. Is this not enabling Islamic terrorists? Most recently, 100+ American officials were sent to Jordan to find Muslim refugees for our resettlement programs.

America, are we witnessing the invasion of our nation and the betrayal of our leaders? Who is looking out for us?

My View: It might be time to end immigration completely

    By Bob Russell

    Posted Feb. 20, 2016 at 10:42 AM
    Updated at 10:43 AM

I think we need to change the inscription on the Statue of Liberty because it is outdated. The inscription was true when the statue was first completed in 1876 but not anymore. The western part of the United States is now settled, and we have enough people in our country. We certainly don't need more people with little education and skills who do not speak our language. We have enough people to perform menial jobs.

The greatest economist of the 20th Century, Dr. Milton Friedman, said, "You can’t have open borders in a welfare state," which has been proven to be correct. In 1924 our nation was concerned that we were losing our culture and national identity and changed our immigration policy.

Congress was concerned that for many years people had entered our country and had not assimilated. New immigrants had not adapted to our culture or learned our language. As a result, Congress passed an immigration bill that required the 1890 U.S. census be used as a base to allow only 2 percent per year of new immigrants from countries represented in that census. This slowed immigration almost to a halt and those who were here assimilated and learned our language.

However, in 1965 all of that changed. Diversity became popular by some politicians, and we let in a lot of people who were much different in religion, customs and culture than our country was at that time. The result has not been good.

Many of these people, rather than adopting our ways, have tried to change us. We have been stupid enough to let them and have even given them preference in hiring and access to education through “affirmative action.” We teach them English in their native tongue, changed road signs so those of us who speak English can’t even read them. We have given them access to our welfare system. We have prepared government documents in many languages for their convenience and have changed America — but not for the better.

According to a report released by the Center for Immigration Studies, 62 percent of illegal immigrants received welfare benefits in 2012. Although legal status is required, most government agencies are not required to check for legal status in order to grant benefits. Why would immigrants lie?

It is said that illegals are barred from voting, but that is not true. Illegals can register to vote anytime they want with no proof of citizenship. It seems that it is a violation of their Constitutional Rights to ask for proof of citizenship. All they have to do is sign a form stating in effect that they are citizens and legally allowed to vote. Why would they lie?

Many states do not even allow asking voters to prove who they are when they vote, as the government claims it is discriminatory. It is claimed that many minorities don’t have photo identification, so it would be racial discrimination to ask for proof of who they are. Why would they lie? What would keep them from voting several times in each election?

Maybe we should again use the 1890 census or at least the 1960 census as a basis for our immigration policy. Or better yet, let’s eliminate immigration completely. With 95 million people out of work, I’m sure we can find someone to fill jobs without more immigrants.

    Letter: Obama’s constitutional duty

    Feb 20 2016 12:01 am

It is ridiculous for Obama to go on national television and say he is going to perform his “constitutional duty” and nominate a person for the Supreme Court. When has this man ever cared about his “constitutional duty”?

Under his oath of office he is to “faithfully execute” the laws of the land. He has chosen to turn his back on that duty. Immigration, sanctuary cities, and illegal executive actions are just some of the actions he has taken contrary to his constitutional duties. Obama cannot have it both ways and hopefully we are coming to an end of the disaster that is his presidency.

    Distrust well earned

Michelle Malkin’s take on the Zika virus (
Feb. 4, Beware of Zika virus, despite Feds’ reassurances) effectively illustrates its relatively “minor role” in the entire immigration scheme.

Malkin unfortunately did not mention the foremost reason for the wholesale freedom in reigning in untold numbers of illegals by erasing all of the so-called rules. Attracting literally millions of new Democratic voters, coupled with voter fraud, would ensure a one-party system.

Beyond that, the prohibitive costs to our penal, health and educational systems are generally suppressed but alarming.

The deep distrust of this administration is well-earned.

Deaton: Take care of our nation, keep illegal immigrants out

    Carol Deaton
    11:39 a.m. EST February 19, 2016

Our country needs to take care of our citizens first, especially our veterans who fought to keep us free. We are going broke supporting the illegal immigrants.

This country is the most giving, compassionate, and help-ready country on this planet. Just because we feel it is time to stop the immigration of illegals into this country until we can get a handle on who they are doesn't change who we are. We are not turning a blind eye when Muslims are raping women in Germany.

We watch the Muslims telling the French people that they are in France to take over. We are tired of having them demand special foods in the food pantries that feed so many people who need help for free. They are dying to get here and not because they are grateful to have a chance to live in a country where anything is possible. They are coming here in groves to take over. If they think their ways are so great they should stay in their countries and fight for their rights there.

When our grandparents come to this country, they fell to their knees as they got off the boats, and kissed the ground. They went to school and learned English and assimilated to the ways of the United States. They worked hard and made a place for their families here.

When they were given citizenship, they cried for joy and showed love and pride for their new country. They raised their children to be law-abiding people and to follow their lead. They didn't come and put out their hand waiting for free anything! Our country needs to take care of our citizens first, especially our veterans who fought to keep us free. We are going broke supporting the illegal immigrants.

The Muslims who are causing all the problems have to be stopped before they enter our country. We have "no go zones" in many states where the problem-causing Muslims are not even leaving the police in, and you can't blame the police for not wanting to go there. They shout about Allah being the only god and wanting to kill all Christians because we don't believe in their god. Our God teaches love and compassion. We do not hate the Muslims. Only those who have declared jihad against us are the ones we need to remove. No one wants to wait until the heads of Christians are on fences and they are being burned alive and hanged!

We have to protect the United States of America from terrorists and if that means building a wall and stopping all illegal immigrants from entering for now, then so be it. This is not because we hate anyone but we are not willing to have anyone take over and change our country. Americans stay strong and keep our nation OURS!

Carol Deaton lives in Fort Myers.

California’s new drivers must get insurance

Re “605,000 undocumented immigrants received driver’s licenses last year” (Jan. 26):

The proponents of driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants said that once they have licenses, they would be able to buy insurance. Now that the undocumented immigrants (the correct term is “illegal alien,” not the politically correct “undocumented”) have obtained driver’s licenses, did they also buy insurance?

The Department of Motor Vehicles does not have an idea how many bought insurance. Was the campaign and assumption correct that by issuing driver licenses to the undocumented immigrants, all of them who drive would buy insurance? Alternatively, was it just politically correct to reward lawbreakers?

Nowadays Maria Galvan and her husband have driver licenses. She told the Daily News reporter: “Now I drive feeling calm.” Can other drivers feel calm knowing that Galvan and her husband have driver’s licenses but not sure if they have insurance?

Why isn’t the DMV investigating if she and others like her have adequate insurance? After all, the prime excuse for not having insurance was because they did not have a license.

It appears that the original rationale for issuing driver’s licenses to illegals may have been a misleading political subterfuge. It is only fair that the public should know what it is now that the lawbreakers have driver licenses. Are we any safer?

    Trump's swearing isn't the problem
    Published: Thursday, February 18, 2016, 12:01 a.m.

Excuse me, but the epitome of profanity is what Barack Obama's government has done to the American people and the Constitution of the United States of America! We have a president who has run roughshod over our American citizens, inviting illegal immigrants, good, bad, or terrorists unabated access to our country and its benefits. And all Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz are worried about is a few swear words from Trump? That's sad ... very, very sad. That being said, most Americans would approve of Trump's passion and concern, so long as it united and protected our great nation.

We have two groups that battle for control in US politics: The military-industrial complex vs. the educational-justice system complex. I hope Trump gets us out of both of these messes. Both of these groups feed on internal inefficiency. We know what the m-i complex got us into---and why conservatives have been in the doghouse for the last eight years. However, Obama, being the great legal scholar he is supposed to be could have led reforms in our civil justice system---which right now is basically a madhouse to enrich a few while keeping everyone else in suspense. Other countries wonder what is wrong with the US civil court system. And then there's the ghettos---always looking for some magic solution from the government class.
