Man wanted for murder deported to Mexico

A 24-year-old Mexican man wanted for the murder of a woman in a Mexican town in 2006 was deported from Miami this week by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the agency announced Friday.

Fernando Nieves-Hernández was expelled Thursday under Immigration and Customs Enforcement escort and turned over to Mexican authorities in Mexico City, the agency said.

Nieves-Hernández was arrested in August by immigration officers in coordination with the U.S. Marshals Service based on an Interpol warrant.

The Mexican national fled to the United States after Elizabeth Méndez Avila was murdered in Tequisquiapan, about 90 miles north of Mexico City.

The agency said Mexican authorities alleged that Nieves-Hernández and Méndez Avila were drinking in Nieves-Hernández's home on Aug. 25, 2006, and that hours later Méndez-Avila's body was discovered in a pickup truck.

Nieves-Hérnandez sneaked into the United States and made his way to South Florida, where he has relatives, the agency said. He was eventually discovered and ordered deported by an immigration judge on Dec. 31.

According to reports, Avila received serious blows to the head and different parts of her body. Nieves-Hernández was allegedly the last person to see her. A subsequent search of Nieves-Hernández's home revealed blood stains that were linked to the victim.

''We are committed to working with our international law enforcement partners to ensure that those who seek to hide in the United States are quickly found and brought to justice,'' said Michael Rozos, ICE field office director for the Office of Detention and Removal in Florida. ``We commend the Mexican authorities for their diligent work on this case. This was truly a team effort.''
