A group of about 100 protesters forced their way through a police barricade and tried to storm Albuquerque’s convention center minutes after presidential hopeful Donald Trump took the stage for his rally.

The protesters were blocked at the door, and police managed to get the barricades back up a few minutes later.

Officers in riot gear arrived around 7:30 and blocked the doors to the convention center, and officers inside the center put up barricades.

Trump began speaking around 7:20 p.m., but was frequently interrupted by protesters in the crowd.

“Go ahead, get them out of here,” Trump said as one of them was escorted out.

Protesters tried to set fire to Trump T-shirts they stole off a vendor cart as the vendor ran from the increasingly agitated crowd.

Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office deputies in riot gear set up on 2nd Street northbound, with a line of uniformed officers behind them.

More than 4,000 people have gathered in Albuquerque’s convention center in anticipation of presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s rally, while at least 1,000 protesters chanted outside.

Two people were escorted out of the convention center by police around 6 p.m. as the crowd chanted “U.S.A.! U.S.A.!”

Pastor Steve Smotherman, who has been outspoken on local political issues, was the first to take the convention center stage, saying

“We’re going to turn this state red!”

Trump took the stage at 7:20 p.m., around the same time as protesters flooded onto Tijeras in front of the convention center, ignoring police’s orders. Officers on horses headed them off on the north side of 2nd Street.

“Shut it down! Shut it down!” The protesters yelled toward the convention center doors.

Trump supporters had to walk through a raucous gauntlet of protesters on their way to the convention center. Both groups hurled obscenities at each other, and some people from the crowd threw water on those walking by.

Groups of protesters and supporters have been gathering since early afternoon, and people from both sides quickly clashed.

Protesters yelled “Sig heil” at Trump supporters as a taunt. The protesters also drove by calling Trump vulgar names. Protesters told some supporters to “Get out of town.”

The protesters had planned to march in front of the convention center doors, but police corralled them near Tijeras and 2nd Street.

A group of traditional native healers joined the protest around 3:30 p.m., and a passing Trump supporter yelled “you’re a wetback” at them.

“Socialism never, capitalism forever,” one Trump supporter yelled at the protesters.

Steve Padilla, 23, joined the rally Tuesday wearing a shirt that said “I pop trunks for Trump,” a reference to the practice in lowrider culture of opening your trunk while visiting during a celebration or gathering.

“Hillary is a communist,” he said. “I’ll take a capitalist over a socialist any day.”

Elaine Baca, of Albuquerque, said she joined the rally to show Hispanic support for Trump.

“I want to show Trump that Hispanics support him more than the national media says,” she said.

Baca said she studied journalism under Tony Hillerman, who she believes would’ve called the national media coverage of Trump’s campaign “yellow journalism.”

Albuquerque police said Monday that they are working with state and federal authorities and hoping planned protests targeting Trump’s public campaign event don’t turn into “chaos.”

Meanwhile, Gov. Susana Martinez and other top-ranking GOP officials — including Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry and Lt. Gov. John Sanchez — are staying away from the Trump rally.

Martinez, who has in the past criticized some of Trump’s immigration-related remarks and has been noncommittal as to whether she will support him, will be holding a business-related news conference in Santa Fe this afternoon.

She told reporters Monday that she was not attending Trump’s event because she was “really busy” and focused on New Mexico affairs.

Tuesday afternoon she issued a statement saying she welcomes Trump, as well as other candidates.

“The governor appreciates that presidential candidates are visiting New Mexico and shining a spotlight on the state and she welcomes them,” Martinez spokesman Michael Lonergan said.

“She hopes they use this opportunity to address critical federal issues that New Mexicans care most about — like protecting our labs and bases.”

The governor’s neutral stance prompted criticism from national and state Democratic Party groups, who accused Martinez of ducking questions about Trump.

Though some politicians are staying away, Trump’s visit to the state has attracted national media outlets.

Before tonight’s rally, Trump is also scheduled to attend a high-dollar fundraiser in Albuquerque that is being hosted by Kevin Daniels, who has contributed to previous GOP candidates, according to The Washington Post.

About 1,500 people attending a nearby convention, the American College of Nurse-Midwives, were escorted out of their conference this afternoon at about 2 so that Secret Service agents could sweep their room with a bomb-sniffing dog.

Midwife Terri Westerlund said some of the midwives came to join the scheduled protests against Trump.

So much for free speech. Man, some of these protesters are way too aggressive, no class. You don't see Trump supporters protesting Hillary and Bernie as they are more civilized and respectful. Stay safe everyone.

Protesters overran police barricades and rushed the Albuquerque Convention Center where Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump was rallying supporters.

Police outfitted in riot gear blocked the protesters as they tried to make their advance Tuesday evening.

Protesters in the streets also started burning T-shirts and other items labeled with Trump's catch phrase, "Make America Great Again."

Inside, Trump continued to speaking to thousands of supporters despite being interrupted numerous times by people who tried to derail the event. Several protesters were also escorted out of the auditorium.

Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump says there was no way he wasn't going to stop in New Mexico and he vowed to be back before the general election in November.

Trump rallied thousands of supporters during a stop in Albuquerque on Tuesday night as protesters tried to derail his speech. He countered that he had all night and that it would be "a love fest."

Some protesters were removed from the auditorium and the crowd responded with cheers, chants of "USA" and boos targeted at those who were disrupting the rally.

Outside, protesters charged police horse patrols and left the barricades where officers had them corralled earlier.

The animosity outside a rally in Albuquerque for Republican Donald Trump is growing, as protesters taunted those on the way to the event.

Some protesters even threw water bottles and water at the Trump supporters as they walked along a sidewalk leading to the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Dereck Scott of Albuquerque was among those who were hit with a plastic bottle.

Scott, who is in a wheelchair, said the attack was unprovoked and unnecessary. He says he has a right to vote for the candidate he prefers.

Protesters chanted "walk of shame" and called Trump supporters racists. Their boos escalated when any Trump supporters believed to be minorities walked by.

Police had the protesters corralled behind metal gates.

Police have corralled a few hundred protesters outside a planned Albuquerque rally for Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump.

The crowd yelled profanities and mocked the candidate's supporters as they filed into the Albuquerque Convention Center for what will be Trump's first campaign stop in New Mexico ahead of the June 7 primary.

By 6 p.m., thousands of people had already gathered downtown for the rally.

Police have said they're working with state and federal authorities, and law enforcement officials were hopeful the protests wouldn't escalate into violence.

    5:30 p.m.
New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez won't be attending an Albuquerque rally for fellow Republican and presidential hopeful Donald Trump.

Martinez's office said Tuesday the governor appreciates that Trump and other candidates are visiting New Mexico and welcomes them to the nation's most Hispanic state.

A spokesman said Martinez hopes candidates use the campaign appearances to address critical federal issues like protecting the state's labs and military bases.

Martinez, the chair the Republican Governors Association, has previously denounced Trump for comments he's made about Mexican immigrants. She has not said if she will endorse him.

Tuesday marks Trump's first campaign appearance in New Mexico.

    4:30 p.m.
Donald Trump supporters are slowly making their way inside the Albuquerque Convention Center for his first New Mexico campaign stop.

Hundreds wearing Trump T-shirts and buttons lined up outside Tuesday to get a glimpse of the candidate while immigrant protesters gathered nearby. It's Trump's first visit to the nation's most Hispanic state.

Steve Baca says he doesn't understand why some advocates have called Trump a racist for wanting to tighten the U.S.-Mexico border.

Minsu Kim held a "Korean for Trump" sign. He thinks people aren't used to a candidate who shuns political correctness.

    3:15 p.m.
Hundreds of supporters have gathered in downtown Albuquerque for a chance to see Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump during his first campaign visit to New Mexico.

He'll be headlining a rally Tuesday evening amid promises of protests.

Despite being denounced by some for previous comments about Mexican immigrants, supporters outside the Albuquerque Convention Center say they appreciate Trump's sediments about securing the border and stemming the flow of people who are crossing illegally.

Marisa Duran, a 31-year-old mother, says as a Latina, she's not offended by anything Trump has said.

Dawn Selwyn and her mother got in line Tuesday morning so they could get as close to the candidate as possible. Selwyn, a 50-year-old Lakota-Sioux woman, says she thinks Trump would be good for Native Americans.

Many of the supporters wore Trump buttons and hats that read "Make America Great Again."

Dozens of officers in riot gear are trying to contain an increasingly angry crowd of Donald Trump protesters outside a Trump rally in Downtown Albuquerque.

A group of about 100 protesters forced their way through a police barricade and tried to storm Albuquerque’s convention center minutes after presidential hopeful Donald Trump took the stage for his rally.

The protesters were blocked at the door, and police managed to get the barricades back up a few minutes later.

The attempted siege prompted police to respond in riot gear. They arrived around 7:30 and blocked the doors to the convention center, and officers inside the center put up barricades.

Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office deputies in riot gear set up on 2nd Street northbound, with a line of uniformed officers behind them. They managed to push protesters back south on 2nd street and along a barrier in front of the convention center.

“This is an unlawful assembly,” Albuquerque police spokesman Simon Drobik said to the protesters over a loudspeaker.

Command staff, including APD deputy police chief William Roseman, were seen as more officers gathered. Police made announcements over the loudspeaker.

Trump began speaking to a crowd of at least 4,000 around 7:20 p.m., but was frequently interrupted by protesters in the crowd.

“Go ahead, get them out of here,” Trump said as one of them was escorted out. He finished speaking around 8:30 p.m.

Protesters tried to set fire to Trump T-shirts they stole off a vendor cart as the vendor ran from the increasingly agitated crowd.
