ACLU CONTINUES MEDIA ASSAULT ON BORDER PATROL AGENTS

In response to a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint north of Las Cruces, New Mexico, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) set up a stop of their own about a mile down the road, according to local reports. Despite Border Patrol's checkpoints existing out in the open for all travelers to see, the ACLU insisted that their own checkpoint was necessary to catch agents allegedly violating individuals' rights.

The El Paso Times reported that the civil rights group was prepared to document any offenses by Border Patrol Agents, who keep the U.S. border safe by searching for illegal immigrants and drugs.

Brian Erickson, a policy advocate with the ACLU's Regional Center for Border Rights, is intent on catching agents committing offenses. Citing only anecdotal evidence of such violations, Erickson told the El Paso Times that he often hears stories about agents violating individuals' rights. He told the paper, "Their testimony doesn't resonate with what their rights should be."

Although travelers were required to stop at the Border Patrol checkpoint, the ACLU's was not mandatory. The El Paso Times admitted that only a few people pulled over for the ACLU, one man stopped only to stretch his legs.

Sylvia Longmire, Breitbart Texas contributing editor and border security expert, said the ACLU's checkpoint probably revealed no abuse by Border Patrol agents. She said, "It's ironic that the ACLU put up this sham of a 'checkpoint' to try to identify incidents of harassment against drivers, when in fact they're the source of harassment against Border Patrol agents who are just trying to do their jobs."

She continued, "The agents work long hours on their feet in both the heat and cold to accomplish their agency's mission, and after spending enough time observing these agents--and not drawing much attention from drivers--the ACLU will see that the Border Patrol is being professional in stopping illegal drugs and possibly violent drug and human smugglers from proceeding farther into the United States."

But Wayne Hancock, Doña Ana County Commissioner, spent time with the ACLU group on Wednesday. He asserted that illegal immigrants will not report Border Patrol abuse to law enforcement due to fear of being deported. He gave no examples of this occurring in the past, according to the El Paso paper.

Hancock told the El Paso Times that he plans to push an ordinance that would ban county employees from asking any individual about their citizen status.

Last week, Breitbart Texas Managing Director Brandon Darby reported on the ACLU's continued effort to "limit effectiveness" of Border Patrol.

Darby cited an El Paso Times article called “ACLU of Texas: Border Patrol, CBP Need More Scrutiny,” which attempted to demonize Border Patrol agents by serving as a mouth piece for angry ACLU members. El Paso Times reporter Daniel Borunda wrote, "The U.S. Border Patrol is under scrutiny by immigrant and civil-rights groups regarding deadly shootings in response to rock throwing on the Mexican border."

Ultimately Darby argued that efforts by leftist groups such as the ACLU could prevent Border Patrol agents from protecting the U.S. border. This latest incident, involving the ACLU checkpoint near Las Cruces, is yet another example of such efforts that are again trumpeted by the El Paso Times.
