State must do what federal government won't
Feb 27, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- With unemployment inching upwards, a recession looming and jobs becoming fewer and fewer in number, perhaps it's time to take another look at our insane federal immigration policies. This country allows over two million illegal aliens to break our sovereign laws and cross our borders each and every year. If you combine that with our legal immigrant allotments of 1.1 million per year you now have well over 200,000 people flooding in each month. Many of these people demand every type of entitlement that we as taxpayers can borrow the money for.
Over the years, Americans have happily given up millions of once good-paying jobs to illegal aliens without a whimper. Everything from construction and manufacturing to the service industry have seen wages and benefits disappear thanks to an unending supply of cheap labor. If there ever was a glaring example of what supply and demand can do, this is it.
Looking at who is now running for president and our current lot in the House and Senate, it will be up to the individual states to fix this problem. Some have already done so with positive results. We need to correct our ignorant complacency of the past and begin to hold our local and state officials responsible for enforcing current law. If we don't and continue down the road we are on, we can surely expect Iowa's standard of living along with most of the rest of the country to continue to plummet to a near Third World level. It's time to get on the phone and express your outrage or just stop whining. -- Loran Joens
