Talk radio host Rush Limbaugh said on his show Thursday that Pope Francis should be telling illegal immigrants to return home since he has criticized its capitalist system.

But he won't, Limbaugh said, because he wants people from socialist countries to stay here and convert the country.

While discussing the Pope's comments about Donald Trump's Christianity, Limbaugh noted that the Vatican is surrounded by a wall just like Francis opposes on the U.S.-Mexican border.

"If socialism is so damn hot, why doesn't the Pope ask all Mexicans to return home?" Limbaugh said. "If capitalism is such a bad thing, why doesn't the Pope say to every Cuban living in America, 'Get the hell back to Cuba?'"

The answer is simple, Limbaugh said: "Because they are going to convert this place, folks. That's what this is all about."

Limbaugh has in the past criticized Francis' statements about capitalism, even calling the Pontiff a Marxist, and said Thursday the Pope ought to follow his own advice and tell people to abandon a country that embraces it.

Instead, he said, "The Pope is encouraging them to come here. He's encouraging us to let them come here. He's encouraging us to stop any efforts whatsoever to prevent them from coming here. Why, if capitalism's so bad? 'Cause if he gets what he wants and everybody else along with him, we're not gonna be capitalists very much longer."

As for the Pope's comments that many have interpreted as questioning Trump's Christianity when he said that someone who builds walls rather than bridges might not be Christian, Limbaugh said that the Pontiff has not made similar comments about socialist and communist leaders.

"Has he questioned the faith of the Castro brothers?" Limbaugh asked. "Has the Pope questioned the faith of any communist leaders? He spends a lot of time in communist countries.

"Has he ever said that Mao Tse-tung, that Fidel Castro, that Raul Castro, any other communist is not a Christian? Why Donald Trump? 'Cause Trump wants to build a wall? Have you seen the Vatican wall?"
