Hillary Clinton supports abortion, so we should forgive her terrible acts?

It's no secret that Hillary Clinton was complicit in the targeting of women who accused her husband of infidelity or rape.

It is stunning to me the level to which Hillary has been allowed to get away with that behavior without consequences, especially when she touts herself as a champion of women, including those who make sexual assault allegations.

A recent New York Times article about Hillary's handling of her husband's affairs includes a quote from famed women's rights lawyer Gloria Allred defending Hillary. Hillary had reportedly approved the hiring of a private investigator to dig up dirt on the women who made accusations against Bill. When questioned about digging into female accusers' pasts, Allred described the behavior as victim-blaming.

"Most people are not nuns, and most people aren't Girl Scouts," Allred told the New York Times. "That doesn't mean they're not telling the truth."

But after being told Hillary supported hiring a man to dredge up dirt on female accusers, Allred had to defend her preferred candidate.

"If Hillary signed off on a private investigator, let's call it a minus," Allred said. "It wouldn't change my support for her because there are so many pluses for her, like her stance on abortion.

She added: "I'd like to hear from Hillary Clinton on the role she played."

Ah, I see. Supporting abortion is a good excuse for engaging in the type of behavior that destroys one's argument for being in support of women. What else can Hillary get away with because she supports abortion or continues to falsely imply that the gender wage gap is the result of discrimination?

We know that Democrats often get a pass for bad behavior simply because of the positions they take on important issues — even if their actions belie those positions, as in the case of Hillary. The same goes for her husband Bill, who has not only been accused of extramarital affairs, but also of rape. Some of the same women, including Allred, who go to the mat for women who make such accusations and claim women never lie about these things (and therefore due process and the presumption of innocence isn't necessary), support Bill after all the accusations against him.

For Bill, he's still a major Democratic star. He gives well-attended speeches (and charges an arm and a leg for them) and is beloved by many in the party who excuse his behavior because of the causes he supports.

Nina Burleigh, former White House correspondent for Time Magazine in the 90s, famously once said she would be "happy to give [Bill] a b——— just to thank him for keeping abortion legal." She was making a reference to Bill's affair with Monica Lewinsky.

Vice President Joe Biden, who hasn't ever been accused of doing anything nefarious like an extramarital affair or sexual assault, nonetheless gets a pass for his creepy actions toward women. Biden regularly touches women awkwardly at events in such a way that could get him expelled from a college campus if the same strict standards applied to the broader society. But he supports the very laws and policies that make campus such a minefield for the sexually active, therefore he appears to be a supporter of women and his actions are excused.

Then, of course, there's the famous example of former Sen. Ted Kennedy, who served in congress for decades after he left an intern to die in a sinking vehicle. The message is clear: Support liberal causes and you can just about get away with murder.
