Immigrant worker amendment removed from war funding bill
5/22/2008
Catherine Merlo
The immigrant worker reform amendment known as EARA has been removed from the Senate Iraq War supplemental funding bill.
The Emergency Agriculture Relief Act was proposed by Sen. Dianne Fenstein (D-Calif.) to provide emergency relief to the nation’s current agriculture labor shortage.
EARA would have created a temporary visa program for farm workers already holding an agricultural job in the U.S. The bill also proposed to streamline the H-2A guest worker process to allow quicker government approval for employers.
Feinstein’s amendment, considered an AgJOBs compromise, had won the approval of the Senate Appropriations Committee last week.
The National Milk Producers Federation and the New York Farm Bureau quickly expressed their disappointment with the amendment’s failure.
Senator Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), a strong immigrant-rights advocate, prompted the removal of the EARA amendment, said NMPF President and CEO Jerry Kozak.

After today's victory, I went to Craig's website and emailed him this on behalf of me and my hubby:
Dear Sen. Craig:
Well, we hope you learned your lesson from yesterday's defeat of yours & Feinsteins' Agjobs insert into the Iraq Spending Bill. Americans flooded the Capitol switchboard to stop it. We called, and we are Idahoans. Reid had no choice but to strip it from the Bill.
Yes, we do agree we need a good AgJobs bill, but the one you and Feinstein proposed WAS NOT IT. Amnesty??? Don't tell me it's not amnesty. A 5-year reprieve, including wives and children? THAT IS AMNESTY, not just for the worker but for the whole family -- who, btw, are not AgJob workers. Why should America give the whole family a free pass just for one worker?? NOT a good idea.
It is our opinion that giving any form of "free pass" to farmworkers who are currently illegal is a slap to America. These people broke federal immigrations law by coming in illegally. And now you want to reward them with a free 5-year pass? WE DON'T THINK SO. Aren't we a nation of laws?
THIS IS OUR OPINION: Agjobs applications should emanate from the country of origin. They must apply and fulfill OUR immigrations law from there. Furthermore, we should approve only 1 worker per family. There is absolutely NO REASON to bring the whole family with them. If they do not want to be separated from their families for any period of time, then they should not apply. No one is forcing them! Why should the American taxpayer have to pay for the education, housing, medical care, and social services of the family? THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON WHY WE SHOULD. The cost of taxpayer services to the family far exceeds the cost of price-reduction in produce and agriculture. What if a member of the family becomes terminally ill? Who will pay for their care? The ag company? Oh, we wish, but no, it is us, the American Taxpayer who will. Senator, can't you see this? Can't you see into the near future like we non-senators can?
In addition, if we can vet these applicants from their home countries, then DHS will have a record of who they truly are, where they live, where they work, and why they are here; and not have to deal with all the aliases illeglals are known for. Post 9/11, Americans INSIST THAT OUR GOVT KNOW WHO IS IN THIS COUNTRY AT ALL TIMES.
Senator Craig, please -- enough of your crazy Agjobs schemes. We are fed up with it. How many more of your amnesties do we have to shoot down till you get it?? We are MORE CONCERNED ABOUT NATIONAL SECURITY THAN HELPING PRIVATE FARMS TO GET THE FARMHANDS THEY NEED. We can live without lettuce for a year if we have to, to secure this nation. As a senator, we are appalled that YOU DON'T GET IT. Who, exactly, are you beholden to? Your actions make us suspicious.
We are happy that you resigned. You have not only disgraced Idaho with your bathroom incident but continue to embarass us with your sell-out of America for money. ENOUGH ALREADY!
