Is Another “Bundy-Type” Confrontation Brewing Over Western Land Use?

First it was the Bureau of Land Management — the BLM — that flexed its military-style muscle against rancher Cliven Bundy in Nevada. Now it’s another agency of the federal government — the U.S. Forest Service — that’s threatening to cut off water needed by cattle in Otero County, New Mexico.

The Washington Times is reporting that the Forest Service wants to fence off a creek in the drought-stricken New Mexico county. Why? According to reports, the move would protect the habitat for the New Mexico meadow jumping mouse.
The Otero County Sheriff said he worries that the increasingly tense situation could erupt into a Nevada-style confrontation between federal agents and the ranchers whose cattle rely on water from the creek.

Otero County officials are not taking the fed’s cut-off threat lying down. The county commission is scheduled to meet today (Monday) to discuss whether to order the sheriff to open the gates against the wishes of Forest Service officials.
