STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – It's 2016, and Donald Trump is still leading the pack for the GOP nomination for president.

It's bad news for all his would-be opponents and establishment Republicans, who still haven't found a way to crack The Donald's code.

Trump got some good news from the Rasmussen Reports polling firm, which showed him still in a dead heat with the all-but-official Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.

In the poll, Clinton had 37 percent and Trump had 36 percent.

Interestingly, 22 percent of those who responded said they would choose some other candidate. Who could that be?
PS 29, Queen of Peace students polled on presidential candidates Fourth and fifth grade students from PS 29 in Castleton Corners and Our Lady Queen of Peace School in New Dorp answer questions about the Presidential Election.

    Who knows?

Hillary isn't facing any real competition for the nomination. One whole person showed up at an Iowa event for Democrat Martin O'Malley this week, and left saying he was still undecided.

Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders continues to hang in there, but his campaign took a blow when it was revealed that a campaign worker had inappropriately accessed a Democratic National Committee voter file and hacked into some Clinton campaign strategy.

Imagine that: After all the controversy over Hillary's emails, she's the victim of some technological shenanigans. It didn't cut any mustard that the staffer who was fired for the breach was apparently suggested to the Sanders campaign by the DNC and the voter file vendor.

    How convenient.

It was some thanks for Sanders, who went out of his way during a televised debate to defend Hillary at the height of her email troubles. Now he's got Hillary's tire tracks all up and down his back. Thanks for playing, Bernie.

Meanwhile, Trump continues to lead national polls among Republicans. Nobody else seems to gain any traction for long, be it Carly Fiorina, Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz (even if you could see Cruz as a possible number two after watching him and Trump slapping each other's backs during the most recent debate).

That being said, Cruz is up in polls in Iowa, which could put a dent in Trump. But The Donald is ahead in New Hampshire and in South Carolina as well. If Trump wins those two, his momentum would be hard to stop, no matter what kind of crazy stuff he says about Mexicans, Muslims and Bill Clinton.

Another sign that Trump is here to stay: The Donald has signed an agreement with the Republican National Committee that gives him access to the RNC's voter database, containing info on 200 million voters.

And a Gallup poll had Trump tied with Pope Francis for second place as the most admired man in America, behind President Barack Obama. Talk about strange bedfellows.

After enjoying an ocean of free press, both positive and negative, over the last several months, Trump is teeing up an ad blitz that could cost upwards of $2 million a week. So now he gets to drive his own message home to voters.

The danger for Hillary is that the lack of competition in the primaries could make her soft for the general election campaign. Democrats could lose interest over months of inaction, even as the prospect of a Trump presidency should be more than enough to energize the base.

Trump, meanwhile, has to be wary of anything that could burst this magic bubble he's been in. He has to win a GOP contest early, lest somebody more "acceptable" suddenly become a viable alternative.

The Iowa caucuses are just about a month away.

I'd like to see that myself, Trump and Bernie. I think Trump once to the general election cycle will win big against either Clinton or Bernie, but I'd prefer to see Bernie supporters out there than the Clinton Mess plus I think Bernie would be a more unifying candidate than Clinton when it's over. I think Bernie actually likes Trump. A Trump vs Bernie race would be a good race for Americans, discussing how best to put Americans back to work and raise wages and income instead of well .... you know .... squirt stains on a blue dress, lies over Benghazi, jeopardizing classified information on personal email servers, renting out the Lincoln bedroom to the Chinese, stealing the White House furniture, silencing rape victims, and so much more ugliness.

I wouldn't worry too much about them. There numbers are actually smaller than pundits make it out to be. Most Republicans are Republicans who are social liberals, fiscal conservatives, so whatever portion of the conservative wing sits out, Republicans will more than make up with women voters and unhappy Democrats who are fed up to the gills with losing jobs and having wages deflated by massive immigration and free trade treason treaties. Most Americans don't want free stuff like what Bernie is selling, most Americans want good jobs and higher incomes so they can pay for the stuff they want themselves whenever they can afford to do so.
