Anti-Trump conservative McMullin makes Minnesota ballot, misses Montana

Independent conservative presidential candidate Evan McMullin made it on the Minnesota ballot but not the Montana state ballot, officials in both states confirmed to POLITICO.
The Minnesota filing deadline for independent candidates was Tuesday, but it took until Wednesday to verify all signatures.
Earlier in the month, McMullin was endorsed by the executive committee of the Independence Party of Minnesota. That endorsement meant the party would help McMullin get the 2,000 signatures needed to get on the ballot in the state. McMullin will appear as the Independence Party’s candidate on the Minnesota ballot.
The “Independence Party [candidate] has been certified and will be on the ballot,” said Ryan Furlong, communications director for the Minnesota secretary of state.
Though there was no official count, McMullin submitted “well over the 2,000 required minimum,” Furlong added.
That's welcome news for McMullin, who didn't make it onto the Montana ballot.
Montana’s deadline to submit signatures was last Wednesday, but the one-week processing deadline lasted until this week. McMullin would have needed 5,000 signatures to qualify.
“Evan McMullin did not qualify for the Montana 2016 General Election ballot,” Montana Secretary of State communications director Emily Dean told POLITICO. She also said, “I don’t think he even tried in Montana.”
McMullin is already on the ballot in Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana and Utah. But he also failed to submit the minimum signatures needed to get on the ballots in California, Alabama and Tennessee.
