With failure to pass DREAM Act, a battle was lost but not the war

    Published December 29, 2010

Washington – The end of 2010 closes a lost decade in the fight for immigration reform in the United States with Congress failing to pass the DREAM Act that would have legalized undocumented students, though the battle will continue in 2011.

Pro-reform students and activists, who had the support of wide segments of society, have made it clear that they will continue their militancy inside and outside the halls of Congress and in campaigns to enlist voters.

Hispanics and other members of the immigrant community, according to activists, will get even in the 2012 elections with both Democrats and Republicans who voted against the DREAM Act, a bill promoted time and again since 2001 to ease the legalization of undocumented students.

Passing the DREAM Act was for many the only salvation, since any chance of comprehensive immigration reform in the United States has vanished for the close to 11 million immigrants living in the shadows.

The bill, long a bone of contention in clashes between political rivals, had a historic victory in the House of Representatives, only to be buried in the Senate, where a handful of Republicans blocked a vote on the legislation.

Immigration reform faces an even rougher ride in 2011: Republicans have taken back control of the House for the 112th session beginning next month and, not satisfied with the current state of affairs, have promised to get even tougher on undocumented aliens.

Seconded by like-minded conservative groups, Republicans plan to push for further measures against the undocumented.

Peter King of New York will head the House Homeland Security Committee and from there will propose giving local police greater powers to arrest illegal aliens.

Meanwhile, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), incoming chair of the House Judiciary Committee, plans to hold hearings on how to step up workplace immigration raids and inspections.

He also backs the extension of the federal E-Verify program, which allows companies to check the legal status of prospective hires.

Participation in the program, which expires in 2012, is currently obligatory for companies that are awarded contracts by the federal government, but many Republicans consider that the solution to the illegal immigration problem will be to "turn off the tap" of jobs available to the undocumented.

"We could free up millions of jobs for Americans and legal immigrants if we enforced our immigration laws against illegal workers," according to Smith, a severe critic of President Barack Obama's immigration policies.

The way Smith and his supporters see it, the economic suffocation of undocumented workers plus more arrests and deportations are key to getting rid of a population that, they believe, is nothing but an economic burden on the country.

They are not moved in the slightest by independent studies showing the benefits and contributions that immigrants bring - the DREAM Act alone would pour millions of dollars into government coffers while helping to slash the deficit - but instead trot out the same time-worn formulas: more walls, more patrols on the border, more deportations.

Nor are they convinced by the fact that the Obama administration has boosted funding for protecting the southern border - including a deployment of the National Guard - and has also increased arrests and deportations, particularly of criminal aliens.

Immigration reform remains an unkept promise on the part of Obama, who last week said he will continue seeking the support of Republicans.

Memory is long, and in the days ahead, militants plan to keep up the fight for reform, even if that means more marches, more hunger strikes, more vigils and visits to Congress. They say another failure is not an option.

Independent studies tend to show that illegals are a drain on our finances and social fabric. If made legal, the illegals given amnesty under the Dream Act, which is not really for students only, will qualify for more and bigger welfare benefits. In addition, Dreamers would qualify for loans and grants that rightfully belong to American citizens. Then, here come the relatives from their home countries, all of whom qualify for welfare.

After the Dream Act attempt and how we were able to let people know about it being amnesty people woke up to reality. They are fed up with illegals. When you see the media in South Florida start publishing comments where people are writing against amnesty and how they welcome those coming here legally you know people are fed up. Even in today's Sun Sentinel thre was a comment about it. People I spoke to in the past felt sorry for them and believed the doing jobs Americans won't do. That no longer is the case and they are sending me information about illegals. I think people who are aware that poorer Americans especially many African Americans go into the military as it is the only way they can get an education and a better life. Then add the fact these illegals that are going to college are taking jobs away from their kids and add in the fact college grads are having a hard time getting jobs and it hits home.

The Dreamers should not be too discouraged since Senator Jeff Sessions told them to be patient while the 'legalities' are worked out for them. And governor Brewer of AZ., will give them and their parents a hand towards 'a path to citizenship' aka amnesty as well.

Every politician is on the side of some sort of 'immigration reform' aka amnesty.

Truth be known, the elected officials are not on the side of our American youth because the winning votes are going to be coming from the minority side as they continue to gain more power.

To prove what I just said, which politician ever mentions the names of those Americans that illegal aliens kill every year? Or which ones tell about the astronomical numbers of molestations and rapes perpetrated upon on our children by illegal aliens EVERY YEAR!? Does anyone know of one. They will not talk about it, and they will not stand up for our youth because it might offend La Raza, and cost them a freaking vote!

Also, if the average American knew the truth about how many children are raped and molested by illegal aliens I think there would be such an uproar, that they just might march on Washington DC with pitch forks and put the fear of God in our yellow bellied weasel politicians. That is why they keep the numbers hush, hush.

Good! Keep showing your true colors. Keep showing Americans that you are making demands and TELLING us what we WILL do. March in our streets with your Mexican Flag. Don't carry our American flag, you have no right to it. Go on your stupid hunger strike. Oh, and that was BS. If you really go on a hunger strike you lose weight. None of you lost weight. Just more of your crap. You have no business DEMANDING anything. You are an ILLEGAL ALIEN. You are not an American. Some of the best colleges are in Mexico and they are free. Take advantage of that. We won't let you get that here. We are awake and stronger then you are.
And stay away from OUR Congressmen and Senators. You need to be arrested for even being near our representatives. You have no business going there or talking to any of them. I hope you get arrested for tresspassing.
You all lost. Americans know what is going on and they said NO! So, go home. Go to school in YOUR country. Learn YOUR language. If you want to come here, come legally or not at all. Take all your family with you. They will soon be out of jobs and if we can put enough pressure on, they will not be getting any more freebies. No more anchor babies. You are SOL. Americans are winning. And we are PO'd.
So, save your breath, save your feet, save your energy and accept that you are not so "special".
Yep! Memory is long. We will not forget, we will never give up or give in.
    GO HOME!!!!

The Pro-Amnesty groups make a Big mistake when they say it is the Repubs who are blocking DA.Independents and many Democrats are fed-up with IA's too.

Repubulicans could not have taken so many seats in Congress without the help of Indies and some Democrats and that is a fact. Check out how many Numbersusa & ALIPAC members are Democrats & Independents and the Numbers are growing as more Americans understand the threat of Illlegal Immigration is to our citizens and our country.
