Military not alone in Obama budget cuts; law enforcement budget reduced

Although the announced reductions in military spending are being widely covered by news organizations and widely known by the public, America’s national security concerns are far more serious than most Americans realize with the Obama administration announcing last Tuesday the likelihood of significant cuts to the budgets for the many agencies under the Homeland Security Department umbrella, according to several law enforcement officials, such as Police Capt. Charles Hoffstetter.
Last week, U.S. House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, R-Texas, reacted immediately to what he believes is President Barack Obama and his minions buying into their own false narrative that the threats to this country are diminishing.”
McCaul served as chief of Counter Terrorism and National Security in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas, and he commanded the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) which combined federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
With that background, McCaul is leery of a White House that denies the evidence of their own senses, according to Hoffstetter, a decorated police commander and former U.S. Marine.
“The President’s budget again shows that his priorities do not match up with the American people’s. Ultimately this proposal increases fees to taxpayers, travelers and businesses while decreasing the overall budget for securing the homeland,” said McCaul in a statement.
“This means the American people will pay more out of pocket while the Department cuts key security programs such as those to detain criminals and conduct aerial patrols of the border,” according to the five-term congressman.
McCaul claims that the American people are fully aware that the northern and southernU.S. borders are not secure, but what they may not know is that the Obama Administration expects to cut the funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement by almost $250 million – including a reduction of 3,500 detention beds.
He also accuses the Obama White House of proposing drastic cuts to the U.S. Coast Guard — up to $300 million in cuts — which will mean fewer ships available for indicting narcotics and other illicit drugs as well as fewer ships available to intercept criminals or terrorists headed for the United States, according to Federal Times.
“Meanwhile, the President increases funding for more bureaucracy including throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at a new headquarters instead of spending precious funds on keeping Americans safe,” McCaul stated.
“[Obama's budget] proposal shows a distinct disconnect between what the American people need and what the Administration wants. Ultimately, this budget proves that the Administration believes its own false narrative that the threats to this country are diminishing, and the Committee will have many questions for DHS at the full Committee budget hearing with the Secretary on March 13,” said McCaul.
