Baldwin transfers funds to Sandy appeal

Actor Alec Baldwin is diverting money raised for his arts charity to help New York and New Jersey residents affected by superstorm Sandy.

The 30 Rock star set up The Alec Baldwin Foundation to generate funds for performers and artistic projects, but he is now handing over cash to help rebuild communities devastated by the heavy winds and rains that lashed the East Coast in October.

The charity will donate $500,000 to local libraries and civic centers in badly hit areas to ensure residents have somewhere to study and congregate while they rebuild their lives.

In a series of posts on his Twitter.com account, he writes, "My foundation is diverting arts-related funding 2 (sic) Sandy relief. The first recipients are libraries in East Hampton, Montauk, Amagansett. and Sag Harbor. We will send $250,000 to these institutions, as well as $250,000 to the Millcreek Community Center in Stafford Township, New Jersey. Such community centers served, and still serve, as hubs for the elderly, civic organizations. There is more to do if you wish to give, whatever you can, to relief groups or community centers that provide assistance, please do so now."
