Consistently hypocritical, that is.
Rep. Eric Swalwell of California is likely going to be the first 2020 Democratic presidential contender to drop out of the crowded field of candidates because no one outside of his deep blue district knows him, but he gave it his best shot.
His platform essentially consisted of new and inventive ways to take away Americans’ Second Amendment rights, all while claiming he was doing it in the name of public safety. Mind you, ‘public safety’ wasn’t a provision the founding fathers included in the amendment when they sent the Bill of Rights to the first 13 states for ratification, but that hasn’t stopped Swalwell from using it as a crutch to disarm as many of us as possible.
As reported by Breitbart News, Swalwell’s most recent policy proposal regarding guns is to require more background checks before allowing Americans to actually partake in their right to keep and bear arms.
In other words, get government permission before being ‘allowed’ to buy a gun — yet another requirement that you won’t find in the Constitution.
“What I found is when we had veterans and NRA members and a mom who cares about gun violence, there wasn’t much that we disagreed on,” Swalwell told CNN over the weekend regarding a recent target practice session with two vets and Shannon Watts, founder of the Michael Bloomberg-funded “Moms Demand Action” group.
“And 72 percent of NRA members who have been polled said they wanted background checks too,” he added.
That’s dubious at best, and Swalwell didn’t say that figure included 72 percent of all NRA members or even a majority or plurality of them. And it also lacks context. Plus, he didn’t identify the polling firm that did the survey, Breitbart’s Awr Hawkins noted.
Instead, he said that Americans should have a president who will “ride that momentum so that we are all safe in America.”
Safe — from what? And who in their right mind can guarantee ‘safety?’ (Related: Is the Left willing to DIE to take away our guns?)

We are going to end gun violence. We are not going to end responsible gun ownership, hunting, and target shooting.

This guy isn’t going to be president but he’ll still block voter ID provisions

Swalwell isn’t even accurate in terms of wanting ‘background checks.’ The U.S. has been conducting those since 1998 and they’ve only expanded since then. But hey, never mind that nearly all mass shooters over the past 15 years acquired their guns legally (after background checks).
“Death and carnage caused by mass public attackers undermines any claim background checks make us ‘all safe in America,’” Hawkins wrote, mocking Swalwell.
Also, he noted further, “NRA members are opposed to expanding background checks” — as they should be because, again, acquiring government permission to buy a gun is not a constitutional requirement contained in the Second Amendment.
But while Democrats lie about background checks making us safer, they also shun background checks — and ID checks — for our elections, which is infinitely more important because they go to the heart of sustaining our republic.
Democrats oppose anything that requires voters to prove who they are before they cast ballots and, more specifically, to prove they are permitted to cast ballots. And while gun background checks before purchases is not part of the Constitution, states adopting their own rules for elections — including requiring a photo ID before voting — is a constitutional function.
Or at least it used to be before Leftists on the federal courts began ruling that requiring identification was somehow racist, bigoted, and ‘unfair’ to minorities.
Swalwell won’t be president come 2020, of that we are certain. It’s also a certainty that his hypocritical gun control stance didn’t win him many converts, either.
Or his opposition to improving the ‘safety’ and sanctity of our elections.
