Customs and Border Patrol Nets the Largest Methamphetamine Bust in History at Arizona Border

Customs and Border Patrol apprehended what the agency is saying is the largest bust of crystal meth in the agency’s history, seizing 3,280 pounds of meth at a port of entry near Nogales, Arizona.
CBP recounts agents inspecting the tractor trailer of a 21-year old Mexican national as he attempted to drive into the United States.

“A non-intrusive inspection of the contents resulted in a positive alert by a CBP narcotics detection canine to a scent it is trained to detect,” CBP said in a press release of the bust, which occurred on Wednesday. “A physical search of the shipment of commercial auto parts led to the discovery of more than 470 packages of methamphetamine hidden within the truck.” The vehicle’s driver was arrested and placed in federal custody for prosecution.
The press release doesn’t describe the previous largest all-time meth bust, but CBP previously described an 800-pound bust made in October 2020 as the largest in history.

The dangerous and highly addictive drugs were stored in two sets of cylindrical packages, hidden within mechanical car parts. Smugglers routinely use sophisticated commercial shipments to conceal drugs.



Border residents, ranchers, and law enforcement have described the southern border as a crime scene under Joe Biden, with illegal immigration at all-time record highs and the area infested with drug and human smugglers. Arizona has emerged as an increasingly central theater in the infiltration of America’s borders, with illegal migrants overwhelming Yuma County after the Texas siege of the border at Del Rio International Bridge.
