While the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border continues to escalate, 2020 Democratic candidates are offering solutions that could make it worse.
There’s no doubt that law enforcement officials are overwhelmed as migrants are rushing to the southern border. Just over halfway through the fiscal year, migrant apprehensions are already surpassing the total number for entirety of the 2018 fiscal year.
With still five more months to figure in, from October through April of the fiscal year 2019, there have been 531,711 total apprehensions, compared to the total 521,090 apprehensions for the entire fiscal year 2018. To be more specific, at this date range in the 2018 fiscal year there were 288,612 total apprehensions — so it’s nearly doubled since the previous year.
To law-abiding citizens, several 2020 Democratic candidates’ immigration policies may not be looking out for the best interests of the American people and will only ignore the problem at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Offer illegal immigrants health care
Instead of disincentivizing immigrants from coming into the states illegally, former Vice President Joe Biden wants to give illegal migrants health care.
He told reporters, as Americans, we have an “obligation” to provide migrants with health care, “regardless of whether they are documented or undocumented.”
Democrats’ “Medicare for All” proposal — which was proposed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and backed by several 2020 Democratic candidates, excluding Biden’s full-on support at the time — would cover all American citizens, but if illegal immigrants were added to it, the bill’s hefty price tag would increase, putting more strain on law-abiding citizens, as IJR Red previously reported.

Let undocumented immigrants roam free with no more detention
While border detention facilities are reaching capacity, resulting in immigrants being transferred to other facilities in the U.S. or released into U.S. communities, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) would want to get rid of detaining illegal migrants at the southern border, as IJR Red previously noted.
“As president of the United States, I would not fund any for-profit prisons, I would not lock up these families,” Gillibrand said. “I would have a humane immigration policy where people seeking asylum and people seeking refuge in this country would have lawyers and have a proper asylum process.”
The 2020 Democratic hopeful claimed migrants “don’t need to be incarcerated” because they’d follow through with the proper asylum process — statistics have proven a flaw in her reasoning, with 87% of migrants not actually showing up for their court dates.
Additionally, Gillibrand would want to “get rid” of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and instead make two new departments. Former acting ICE director Tom Homan criticized her for the “ridiculous and reprehensible” stance. He said her immigration policies would only “entice more families” to make the dangerous journey to the U.S.
Break down those walls, they only “end lives”
2020 Democratic hopeful Beto O’Rourke has not been and is not a fan of the border wall.
After unveiling his immigration plan on Wednesday to provide 11 million undocumented migrants citizenship, O’Rourke told CNN that “we certainly don’t need more walls” and he’d “leave it up to local communities” to decide.
O’Rourke previously declared in February that “walls end lives.” However, after he claimed that he’d “take the wall down” if he could, the Democrat later backtracked by saying, “I think there is a role for physical barriers in some places.”
However, the Democrat states on his 2020 campaign website that the Trump administration is focusing on a “wall that we do not need, does not work, and will not make us safer.” He noted that he would provide “zero dollars for this unnecessary wall.”
A 2020 Democrat is just giving up on the problem
Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro was slapped for his immigration policy to reverse a Bush-era policy by decriminalizing illegal immigration and provide citizenship to millions of migrants, as IJR Red previously reported.
“It’s time to end this draconian policy and return to treating immigration as a civil — not a criminal — issue,” Castro said.
Republican National Committee spokesperson Christiana Purves previously knocked Castro’s and O’Rourke’s immigration plans: “The crisis at our southern border does not need to be amplified with their dangerous policies that would increase human trafficking and drug smuggling, and weaken our border security.”
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) also had something to say about the Democratic candidate deciding to “give up,” instead of fixing the crisis at the southern border.
“Thanks for the suggestion Julian, we will take it from here,” Crenshaw said.
