BREAKING: WWII Vets Symbolically Seize Control of the WWII Memorial (Pictures)


BREAKING: WWII vets have seized control of the WWII memorial in DC and will not budge. They’re ignoring the “shutdown” orchestrated by Obama and are standing watch at the memorial.
These patriots fought the Nazis and the Japanese army. You think they’re afraid of some wannabe-dictator like Barack Obama? Of course not. They’ve still got it. Do you support the vets? We sure do. There’s a reason they were called “The Greatest Generation”.
It’s time for everyone to learn from this symbolic statement and remember: If you are tired of tyranny, just knock down the barriers. The power is always in the hands of the people.

The vets are apparently from Mississippi. Note that this is NOT a violent event — this is a symbolic gesture.
Spread it like wildfire and get these people some publicity — they deserve it.

What was meant to be a final gathering of heroes Tuesday instead became a final victory for dozens of World War II combat vets who refused to let the government's budget battle block a visit to their memorial in the nation's capital.
With bagpipers playing "Amazing Grace," nearly 200 veterans from Mississippi and Iowa swept past barricades and security guards at the World War II Memorial in Washington in order to keep a commitment to visit the site, which was closed today due to the partial government shutdown. The veterans, in their 80s and 90s, were accompanied by Rep. Steven Palazzo, R-Miss., a former Marine who earlier vowed not to let the National Park Police keep them from a planned visit to the open-air monument.
"For some reason, I just feel like royalty," Jim Ferencak, a Navy and Air Force veteran told GulfLive.com at the event.

"We're going to be there. That’s all there is to it. I don’t know what these veterans will do if they're not allowed to view the monument, but whatever they do, I'll be right there with them."

Some veterans on hand wiped away tears when they saw a crowd waving the American flag as they came out of their bus.
"These men and women didn't cower to the Japanese and Germans," Palazzo said. "I don't think they're about to let a few National Park Police stand in their way."
Palazzo, who was joined by several other members of Congress, moved the barricades at the memorial and police did not try to stop the veterans' access.
"It's better to ask for forgiveness than permission," Palazzo said. “We lined the veterans up along the blockade, we saw an opening and we took it.”
The veterans are traveling as part of Honor Flighthttp://global.fncstatic.com/static/v...ernal-link.png, a program that enables World War II veterans to partake in an expense-paid trip to view the memorial. Tuesday's trip is the second-to-last flight, with the last scheduled for November. But prior to their arrival early Tuesday, there was fear that the government shutdown and federal worker furloughs would mean no access to the monuments on the National Mall.
But with lawmakers leading the charge, the American military heroes, some in wheelchairs, surged into the memorial.
"This is the best civil disobedience we've seen in Washington in a while," Congressman Bill Huizenga, of Michigan, told GulfLive.com.
"We're all thankful for their efforts and I know these veterans are thankful as well," Wayne Lennep, the Honor Flight organizer said.
Joe Cleveland, of Union, Miss., told The Mississippi Presshttp://global.fncstatic.com/static/v...ernal-link.png that he would "be thinking about the many battles that have been fought and thanking all those who were willing to go fight for our country."
Palazzo noted his grandfather, Manuel McCarty, served in World War II at Guadalcanal and Okinawa. Palazzo was 7 years old when his grandfather died and said he sees his grandfather in these veterans.
"I only have a couple of memories of my grandfather," said Palazzo, who has taken part of Honor Flights before. "But each time I see these men, I envision how he'd be."

World War II Veterans taking part in an “honor flight” pushed their way into the national World War II Memorial, Tuesday. The memorial had been closed due to the federal government’s shutdown which began at 12:01 AM, Tuesday morning.

The honor flight is a national organization that provides free flights to and from Washington D.C. for World War II Veterans. For many of these veterans, this is the first and only time they have visited the National Memorial.

According to reports from Leo Shane, a reporter with Stars and Stripes, about 8-12 members of Congress distracted park police while the veterans knocked over barricades to gain entry to the memorial.

According to Republican Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann, in some cases, it was only police tape that separated the veterans from the Memorial. In that case, Bachmann says she cut the tape to allow entry for the vets.

Shane, reporting via twitter says that there has been no attempt to stop those vets from visiting the memorial. He goes on to post “maybe after the congressmen leave.”

A group of World War II veterans in an Honor Flight group Tuesday knocked over barriers imposed during the government shutdown at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C., to get inside.
As part of the federal government shutdown, national parks are closed. But the group of veterans continued to the monument Tuesday, as reported by Stars and Stripes reporter Leo Shane:
Update: WFB staff writer Lachlan Markay arrived at the WWII Memorial, where a second group of Iowa vets (in yellow shirts) have also arrived at the memorial. Park police are letting all vets through, according to Shane.

“We’re looking about how to deal with this in the future,” Park Police spokeswoman Carol Johnson said Tuesday.

Pretty danged low, apparently.

When I first read about a group of WWII veterans having to push past barriers in order to visit the World War II memorial, closed supposedly as part of the Democrat shutdown of the government, I figured it was one of those snafus one hears all too often about when the subject of bureaucracy comes up. Annoying, infuriating, and disrespectful toward our veterans, but still unintentional.

What a naive fool I am.

According to Representative Steven Palazzo (R-MS), whose special projects these Honor Flights have been, he contacted the Park Service, the Interior Department, the Capitol Police, and even the White House to get access for these veterans to a memorial built to honor them.
They all said “no:”

“We got the heads up that they will be barricaded and specifically asked for an exception for these heroes,” Palazzo told TheDC.

“We were denied and told, ‘It’s a government shutdown, what do you expect?’ when we contacted the liaison for the White House.”

Palazzo’s office was in touch with the heads of the National Park Service, the Department of the Interior and the Capitol Police. He says all these officials rejected his request to allow the veterans, many of whom are octogenarians and some of whom are in poor health, to attend.

Palazzo, a Gulf War Marine veteran who has participated in all five of the Honor Flights, blames the White House for making it harder on veterans and playing politics. “At first I thought it was a huge bureaucratic oversight,” Palazzo told The Daily Caller, “but having talked with the officials I can’t help but think this was politically motivated. Honor Flights, which bring WWII veterans to the nation’s memorials, are planned a year in advance and cost anywhere between $80,000 to $100,000. How low can you get with playing politics over our nation’s veterans?”

In Chicago on the Potomac, you can get very, very low.

What a disgrace.

Obama’s Loathsome War on WWII Vets Deserves Our Scorn and Fury

I’m sure you’ve all see the reports.

WWII Veterans asked the White House for permission to visit the World War II Memorial in case of a shutdown. The veterans are part of the Honor Flights program that helps aging veterans visit the WWII Memorial.

Even though there’s no cost involved, the White House chose to dishonor the veterans’ request. It send forth “goons,” in Senator Paul’s works, to erect barricades around the memorial. The White House posted armed guards to keep the veterans at bay.

A Republican member of the House of Representatives went out and removed a barricade. The veterans flooded in. Some in wheelchairs.

Only a contemptible, loathsome snake of a man would use WWII veterans–in their late 80s and 90s–as political pawns in his game of dictator.

This is a man who brags of being a “Constitutional Scholar,” then tells the American people that Congress is not allowed to choose what it funds. He knows better; he’s lying.

This is a man who brags of being a “Constitutional Scholar,” but insists that laws upheld by the Supreme Court can never be altered or abolished. He knows better; he’s lying.

Loathsome. Despicable.

Democrats should realize they can reject Obama’s reptilian ways without leaving their party. They can, for once, put human decency before party loyalty.

And Republicans should take note. When a leader of our party exposes himself as a poisonous snake, run away.

UPDATE: WWII Veterans from Toledo, OH, were told they’d be arrested if they attempted to approach the WWII Memorial.

The White House is playing with fire, now. And its lost the <acronym title="Google Page Ranking">PR</acronym> battle.

Tomorrow, Andrea Plunkett of Kansas City will escort 90 Missouri WWII Veterans on an Honor Flight to the Memorial. Stay tuned . . .
