DALLAS (AP) - - (09/24/05)-- The owner of a charter bus that exploded while carrying elderly Hurricane Rita evacuees reportedly has a history of safety and financial problems.
As many as 24 people were killed when the caught fire and blew up on Interstate 45 south of Dallas. Exploding oxygen tanks used by some of the evacuees may have been a factor.

Today's Dallas Morning News says the owners of Global Limo filed for bankruptcy protection in February. It's license was revoked for a few days in May, for the second since 1993.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration also had singled out Global for full inspections when police stop their buses.

Meanwhile, the Houston Chronicle reports that the bus had a lapsed registration but probably was pressed into service because of the hurricane.
