Thread: California Confusion on voting in GOP Presidential Primary

I am placing this in General Discussion due to the importance of this Presidential Election and stopping Illegal Immigration.

I have found confusion on this website and amongst my friends on voting in the CA 2012 Presidential Primaries. The confusion rises out of California changing their voting rules (Proposition 14). I went to the CA-Gov. website and called the GOP Headquarters in Sacramento to have it clairified. Here is what I found and was told relating to the Presidential Primaries.

How are primary elections conducted in California?

All candidates for voter-nominated offices are listed on one ballot and only the top two vote-getters in the primary election – regardless of party preference - move on to the general election. A write-in candidate will only move on to the general election if the candidate is one of the top two vote-getters in the primary election.
Prior to the Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act, the top vote-getter from each qualified political party, as well as any write-in candidate who received a certain percentage of votes, moved on to the general election.
The Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act does not apply to candidates running for U.S. President, county central committee, or local office.

How are presidential primary elections conducted in California?

Qualified political parties in California may hold presidential primaries in one of two ways:

• Closed presidential primary - only voters indicating a preference for a party may vote for that party's presidential nominee.
• Modified-closed presidential primary - the party also allows voters who did not state a party preference to vote for that party's presidential nominee.

If a qualified political party chooses to hold a modified-closed presidential primary, the party must notify the California Secretary of State no later than the 135th day before Election Day.

The Democratic and American Independent parties notified the Secretary of State that they will allow voters who did not state a political party preference to vote the presidential ballot of their parties in the upcoming June 5, 2012, Presidential Primary Election.

According to the GOP Headquarters in Sacramento you have 15 days prior to June 5th to register as a Republican to be able to vote in the GOP Primary.

If you aren't registered republican and you want to vote in the republican primary call your local County Registrar of Voters Office and ask them to send you the form to change parties. Fill it out and mail it back. (They have free 800 #s.)

Or go online and print out the form, fill it out and mail it to them.

You can change back to any party after the election. There is no limit on how many times or how often you can change party affiliations.

Thank you JohnDoe2. This is so important. I know for a fact that some people are being told by people outside of stores registering voters that if they register undeclared they can vote in all of the primaries. I don't know if it is their misunderstanding of Prop 14 or a Democrat Scam on California voters.
