    Obama's alien nation

The United States of America has a huge and complex problem with illegal aliens. This problem has gone on for several decades and by different government administrations. Why has illegal immigration been allowed to last so long? Has America become tolerant to "illegal acts?"

The Founding Fathers of this nation came from immigrant families and this nation has remained friendly to immigrants coming from around the world. The United States of America has remained a nation of opportunities and has accepted more immigrants than any other country.

According to U.S. immigration law, immigrants are persons lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States. According to the Census Bureau's 2009 American Community Survey, the U.S. immigrant population was 38,517,234, or 12.5 percent of the total U.S.
population. Immigrants are "foreign born" and refer to persons with no U.S. citizenship at birth.

So why is there such a huge problem with illegal immigration in this country? First of all it didn't happen overnight; it has been a problem that was ignored by the federal government and the politicians, and encouraged by some citizens and businesses who would profit from cheap labor from those coming across the border.

Law enforcement has tried to enforce the immigration law and have done the best they could but have been hampered with bureaucratic procedures and decades of political manipulation by both political parties and have swept this problem under the rug.

Second, there has not been sufficient border fencing or number of law enforcement personnel to protect the entire border in order to enforce existing immigration law. Legal immigration starts at the border, but also illegal immigration starts at the border where aliens enter the country to break our laws. If this nation took the same attitude with other laws in this country, we would have anarchy.

The U.S. Immigration law serves as a gatekeeper for the nation's border, determining who may enter, how long they may stay, and when they must leave. Congress maintains total authority over U.S. Immigration, while the President's authority is restricted to refugee policy. The U.S. courts generally stay out of immigration matters, unless constitutional rights are at issue.

An "alien" has been defined by the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 (INA) as "any person who is not a citizen or a national of the United States." U.S. Immigration law further oversees all the processes under which aliens may enter the U.S., gain residence, and/or become a naturalized citizen, wherein they obtain full citizenship rights. It includes a regulatory body which deals with who may enter the U.S., how long visitors may remain and when they must be evicted.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) estimated that in 2010 the illegal alien population was almost 12 million persons. Government and academic sources estimated the illegal immigrant population at about 11 million residents. FAIR is a national, nonprofit, public-interest, membership organization of concerned citizens who share a common belief that our nation's immigration policies must be reformed to serve the national interest.

FAIR estimates that the annual cost of illegal immigrants to American taxpayers is $113 billion. FAIR states that during the past 18 months, Obama's administration has repeatedly bypassed congressional authority over immigration policy, claiming broad executive authority to institute sweeping changes. Is this not a violation of the people's Constitution?

The Department of Homeland Security reported that illegal immigrant population dropped to 10.8 million in 2009 compared to 11.6 million in 2008. It was the second consecutive annual decline and the largest in at least three decades.

According to a report by Steven Camarota, of the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington, D.C., think-tank, the downturn in illegal immigration is due in part to the bad economy, in which job opportunities have dried up. This trend has been referred to as "self-deportation".

Accordingly, it appears that most illegal aliens, many being from Mexico and Latin America, came to the United States for economic reasons and are now returning to their native country due to the poor economy here in the United States. Illegal aliens break other laws just to be able to stay in this country.

Homeland Security pushes to cancel more than 1,600 deportations because the Obama administration is only focusing deportation efforts on illegal immigrants who are determined to be criminals and those who pose a national security or public safety threat. An additional 280,000 deportation cases are under review by federal lawyers to deport only those with a criminal record or pose a national threat.

Essentially the executive branch of the government is making its own laws as though the Congress didn't exist. It seems under Obama's policies these non-criminal illegal aliens can remain in this country possibly indefinitely and may be eligible to apply for a work permit. Is this amnesty in a different form and who is paying for it and at what cost?

The issue of illegal aliens continues to divide this nation and it seems President Obama may be using the issue to create a nation of undocumented aliens.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith again called Obama's policies "backdoor amnesty."

These liberties and freedoms that aliens are seeking are not guaranteed by President Obama or any other president; they are guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, the supreme law of the land, and by those brave men and women who gave their lives so that this nation would remain a free Constitutional Republic. Crossing the borders illegally is showing disrespect to all our laws and the American citizens.

The idea that President Obama and his administration are suing the Border States who want to enforce existing immigration law is most telling and disturbing to say the least. Border States are constantly dealing with illegal aliens, drug dealers, and terrorists.

Here is something to ponder: President Reagan, in 1986, signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act, which legalized close to 3 million undocumented immigrants. The law was supposed to be a comprehensive solution with provisions intended to clamp down on border security. These provisions were never enforced and resulted in some 11 million illegal aliens living in the United States today.

Become informed, let your voice be heard, and vote Nov. 6 to take back our country.
