Republican strategist Karl Rove told a Fox News Sunday panel that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's response to the BridgeGate scandal would, if anything, help him with the conservative constituency that has been seen as his biggest obstacle to the 2016 Republican presidential nominations.

"I don't think the tea party is going to seize upon Fort Lee and the George Washington Bridge as their defining difference for Chris Christie," Rove said. "In fact, I think his handling of this, being straightforward, taking action, saying I'm responsible, firing the people, probably gives him some street cred with tea party Republicans who say 'That's what we want in a leader, someone who steps up and takes responsibility.'"

GOP establishment figure Karl Rove said on Fox News Sunday that the Fort Lee and George Washington Bridge scandal that New Jersey GOP Gov. Chris Christie is facing will end up giving him “street cred” with the Tea Party movement.

“There will be reasons why conservatives have disagreements with Chris Christie,” Rove said during a panel discussion with Bob Woodward and Juan Williams about the scandal.

I don’t think the Tea Party is going to seize upon Fort Lee and the George Washington Bridge as their defining difference with Christie. In fact, I think he’s handling to this [sic] – being straightforward, taking action, saying “I’m responsible firing people” – probably gives him some street cred with Tea Party Republicans who say, “That’s what we want in a leader, somebody who steps up and takes responsibility.”

Rove, a strident Tea Party opponent, has seized upon a narrative laid down by conservative Tea Party movement leaders with regard to this scandal: when compared with how President Barack Obama has not held anyone accountable for scandals that have plagued his administration, Christie’s firing of his deputy chief of staff and dismissal of his ex-campaign manager seems refreshing.

For instance, Tea Party Patriots national coordinator Jenny Beth Martin made an argument like that in a statement. “Abuse of power by government officials is wrong, whether it’s closing lanes in Ft. Lee, using the IRS to target political opponents, or waiving the law regarding ObamaCare,” she said in response to Christie’s actually holding a couple people accountable. “Today, Gov. Christie held some subordinates accountable. Time will tell whether this is enough. We’re still waiting for President Obama to hold anyone accountable.”

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, another Tea Party movement leader, made a similar argument regarding nobody’s being held accountable for the Benghazi or NSA scandals from the Obama administration.

Those arguments are true in a narrow sense, in that compared with Obama, Christie’s response to a scandal has been markedly different. That does not, however, mean Christie is going to somehow pick up “street cred” among conservatives for this.

Christie’s gubernatorial administration and people he trusted with governmental power abused that power. While Christie denies having known about the abuse of power, and thus far no evidence has surfaced to contradict that denial, the fact of the matter is that his administration and people he entrusted still misused the power of government for political purposes.

Conservatives do not stand for that, and regardless of what actions he has taken or will take in the future to respond, nothing changes the fact that his administration abused power.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus says a traffic jam scandal won’t disqualify New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie from running for president.

Appearing Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Priebus says Republican primary voters could move past the scandal that has ensnared the administration as polls show Christie as a top contender in 2016.

Priebus says: “Americans are a very forgiving people.”
He says Christie demonstrated leadership by holding a lengthy news conference Thursday to apologize for his staff’s behavior.

The chairman says, “We all make mistakes.” He says, “The real question is: What do you do when mistakes happen?”

Christie fired the top aide who gave the go-ahead to shut down lanes to the George Washington Bridge and cut ties with one of his top campaign advisers.

Chris Christie's lawyers with the firm of Gibson, Dunn, & Crutcher may be getting a subpoena if they don't turn over documentation to the New Jersey Legislature's committee dedicated to investigating last September's lane closures on the George Washington Bridge. A source in the State House said that, after meeting in closed session Friday, the committee gave the attorneys hired by the governor's office a Friday deadline to hand over lists of the people they interviewed, any notes on the interviews, and other documents they viewed while conducting the internal review of the so-called "Bridgegate" scandal that was released last month.

If Gibson Dunn does not turn over the requested documents, the source said the firm will be subpoenaed by the committee. Gibson Dunn attorney Randy Mastro said his team looks forward to continuing a "cooperative dialogue" with the Legislature's investigators in a statement Tuesday evening.

"We reached out to counsel for the committee over a week ago to discuss sharing voluntarily the interview memoranda regarding the lane realignment upon which our report was partially based. In light of the committee's statements this afternoon, we will look forward to continuing that cooperative dialogue," Mastro said.
The lane closures led to several days of gridlock in Fort Lee, N.J. Some Democrats have suggested the lanes were shut to retaliate against Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich for declining to endorse Christie's re-election bid last year.

At its meeting Tuesday, the source said the committee also discussed other subpoenas it may send out. So far, the committee has sent over 30 subpoenas to individuals and organizations including Christie's office, his campaign organization, and several of his close aides. There are 12 members of the Legislature on the committee including eight Democrats and four Republicans. It is co-chaired by two Democrats: Assemblyman John Wisniewski and State Senator Loretta Weinberg. Bridgegate is also being investigated by the U.S. Attorney in New Jersey.

The State House source who spoke to Business Insider said the Bridgegate committee wants to know whom Gibson Dunn spoke while conducting their internal review. According to the report, the attorneys conducted "interviews with more than 70 witnesses," though they were not all named. Gibson Dunn's report found Christie "did not know of the lane realignment beforehand and had no involvement in the decision to realign the lanes."
