The United States' National Security Agency has been spying on the Mexican Security Commission (CNS) for years. German newspaper Der Spiegel has revealed that the NSA found a "gold mine" of data in the Mexican security operations. Known as operation "White Tamale" the US operation involved acquiring information on drug trafficking and border activities by hacking the CNS, formerly known as the Secretary for Public Security (SSP).

The German newspaper revealed that the first step involved a team of hackers known as TAO which sent the NSA a list of CNS leaders who may have been worthy of surveillance. Having secured a list of subjects, the TAO hacked the email accounts of these security operatives. Having infiltrated these accounts, the TAO was able to obtain its "gold mine" of data on drug trafficking, border security and the country's penitentiary system.

"Soon the NSA spies had knowledge of the agency's servers, including IP addresses, the computers used for distributing email and the addresses of various CNS employees," Der Spiegel revealed.

The revelations come in the wake of the leaking of millions of documents by former NSA analyst Edward Snowden. Der Spiegel revealed in October that the NSA had been observing the CNS for some time, however, until now the depth and extent of the spy operations had not been fully understood.
