The Cost for Protecting Jet-Setting President-Elect Trump? Yuge!
The Cost for Protecting Jet-Setting President-Elect Trump? Yuge!
by William M. Arkin, Cynthia McFadden, Ken Dilanian and Corky Siemaszko
When the soon-to-be first family sits down in Florida for their Thanksgiving feast, they will be watched over by the core part of their new extended family — a contingent of at least 150 Secret Service personnel.
And when Donald Trump gets sworn in as president on Jan. 20, that contingent will balloon to more than 920 Secret Service agents and support personnel in Washington and his hometown of New York City.
The price tag for all that security is already very big, or as the Manhattan mogul might put it, "Yuge," internal Homeland Security and Secret Service documents reviewed by NBC News show.
""Secret Service protection is the most intrusive thing that anyone could ever experience""
Right now the cost to taxpayers is more than $2 million daily, the documents show, a number that is sure to increase whenever the president or first lady travel — or when the threat level rises.
Meanwhile, the New York Police Department is already handling external security at Trump Tower, the Manhattan home base of the president-elect, at an estimated cost of $1 million per day.
"You put a price tag on anything around the president, then you're putting a price tag on his life and that is priceless," Jonathan Wackrow, a former Secret Service agent who has protected every living president, including President Barack Obama, told NBC News in an exclusive interview.
Protecting Trump's family presents unprecedented challenges. First off, it's a big family — 18 members in all — including Melania Trump and her 10-year-old son Barron, as well as four adult children, three of them married, with a combined eight grandchildren.
The Secret Service has not had to protect the adult children of "a president-elect in a long time," Wackrow said.
Also complicating security arrangements is Melania Trump's decision to stay in Manhattan until Barron is done with school in June. Trump has told his team that he intends to make regular weekend trips back home to Trump Tower until Melania moves into the White House.
So millions of dollars worth of infrastructure will have to be installed in Trump Tower to turn it into a White House North.
"You have to be able to conduct a global war from the front porch, that is just the reality of the situation," said Terry Sullivan of the White House Transition Project, a non-partisan organization that helps prepare the staffs of incoming presidents for the rigors of working in the White House.
When Trump heads home to the luxury 58-story high rise on Fifth Avenue, the feds will also need to find accommodations for staffers in a building where a modest one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment rents for $5,250-a-month, according to the StreetEasy real estate site.
"They would need at least a whole floor, and every apartment on that floor would need to be turned into an office," said Sullivan.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is so concerned about the city getting stuck with the bill for protecting Trump that he's already been in touch with outgoing Homeland Security chief Jeh Johnson as well as the President-elect's transition team to ensure that the feds guarantee reimbursement.
"I made clear to (Johnson) how committed we are to the president-elect's security, but I've also made clear to him that there's extraordinary costs involved and that we want to start the process of understanding what kind of federal reimbursement we can get," the mayor said recently. "I will be speaking to the president-elect's team as early as next week on this topic."
Former Secret Service agent Evy Poumpouras, who was part of the security details that protected Obama and President George W. Bush, said she hopes Trump will reconsider at least his own weekend plans once he becomes president.
"This is one of those situations where they really should have an honest conversation with him and just really explain to him that this is not a good idea," she told NBC's Brian Williams. "To physically re-create the security that exists at the White House in New York City, it's not going to happen."
She added: "There's buses going by, there's trucks going by. When that detonates, that building is not going to withstand that blast."
In a subsequent interview with NBC News, Poumpouras said flights out of LaGuardia Airport will have to be rerouted so they don't fly directly over Trump Tower, and the subways running below the building will have to be fortified and closely watched.
"Routes will need to change," she said. "All the security changes to make this happen will cost millions upon millions."
Then there's presidential gridlock. Any time the commander-in-chief ventures in and out of New York City, traffic grinds to a halt and commuter chaos ensues.
Three days after he was elected, Trump's motorcade forced the shutdown of the Lincoln Tunnel — a key artery connecting New York City to New Jersey — for 60 minutes at the height of the evening rush hour.
Back in 2009, there was gridlock across Manhattan when the Obamas flew in one Saturday for dinner and a Broadway show. And while the first couple has been back home to Chicago numerous times in the eight years they've been in the Washington, they've only spent 14 nights in their Hyde Park home, according to White House records.
For a taste of things to come, consider how Trump arrived Tuesday evening at Mar-a-Lago, his 126-room, 110,000-square-foot mansion in exclusive Palm Beach for the Thanksgiving holiday. It was in a 45-vehicle convoy that included limousines, vans — and an ambulance.

Trump's glamorous Florida getaway will also get a bit of a makeover.
"It is the case that the Secret Service regularly upgrades a president's off-campus residence," said Sullivan. "Typically, it includes security apparatus, and global communications."
Trump will have to get used to having lots of unfamiliar faces around him all of the time.
"Just think about you at your home tonight and four strangers just show up and they're standing in your kitchen," Wackrow, the former agent, told NBC News.
"Secret Service protection is the most intrusive thing that anyone could ever experience. We experience parts of your life, but we're also there in those private times when things aren't good — family arguments — family loss. We're there when staff goes away and the military goes away, the only ones left are the Secret Service agents. We're there 24 hours a day, 365 days a year."
That takes some getting used to.
For example, Obama was told early in his administration that his protective detail needed 4 hours notice to safely manage his pickup basketball games. That, at first, did not go over well.
"It takes a little bit of time and it takes a little bit of give and take on both sides," said Wackrow. He said that the Secret Service will "need to understand [what] is unique about protecting Donald Trump and the first lady."
"If the president-elect says, 'No,' there's going to be a conversation," Wackrow added. "We're not going to just say OK, we're going to actually push back, we may have to modify, but we'll understand what that pressure point is and then work around it."
The Trump trip to Florida wound up being a compromise on both sides, a Homeland Security official familiar with the operation told NBC News.
The cost to U.S. taxpayers? Seven million dollars, the official said.

What is NBC doing? Why are they investigating and reporting on the security team and actions protecting Donald J Trump and his family? What are you up to NBC?!!!!

SHAME ON YOU, NBC!!! You are jeopardizing the security of our new President. I will never watch another program on your station. Jesus, you are a bunch of corrupt dangerous morons.Last edited by Judy; 11-24-2016 at 09:01 AM.

All the Clamor? Trump’s Palm Beach Neighbors See an Upside
By FRANCES ROBLESNOV. 23, 2016
PALM BEACH, Fla. — There will be no skinny-dipping this weekend outside the Borislow family’s oceanfront home here: They live across the street from Mar-a-Lago, President-elect Donald J. Trump’s winter resort, and now a Coast Guard patrol boat is parked right outside their window.
Mr. Trump arrived at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday night for his first visit as president-elect. The difference was notable: Police cars stopped trucks trying to pass down the two-lane road approaching the estate, and dark sedans with rather serious-looking drivers were parked along the street.
Coast Guard boats toured the water that surrounds both sides of the road, while a tent was set up nearby where delivery trucks were searched. News vehicles camped out a few blocks away, for a better shot of Mar-a-Lago’s waterfront view.
Shelly Borislow, standing in front of her 7,800-square-foot house, where several Palm Beach County sheriff’s cruisers were parked and officers shooed away pedestrians, had no problem with the excitement. “There are so many handfuls of people who would want to live across the street from the president,” she said.
(At least, she hopes so. Her home is for sale for $27.5 million, and she is thinking now she might have a few takers.)
Palm Beach is used to accommodating all kinds of dignitaries — the Kennedys spent time here at their winter home when John F. Kennedy was in the White House. But the urgent need to secure Mr. Trump’s 20-acre resort and be mindful of car and pedestrian traffic seemed to take the town of less than 9,000 by storm.
Law enforcement officials have long worried about the challenges of protecting Mar-a-Lago, which Marjorie Merriweather Post left to the federal government in 1973 with the intent that it would become a presidential retreat. But according to a club history provided by Mar-a-Lago, the United States government eventually returned the property “due to maintenance and security concerns.” Mr. Trump purchased it in 1985 and turned it into a membership club a decade later.
Now, Mr. Trump’s ascendance means security concerns and presidential buzz are mixing in almost equal measure in this haven for the wealthy and superwealthy.

Federal officials, led by the Secret Service, are overseeing an array of security restrictions. The Federal Aviation Administration has limited pilots around Palm Beach, and the Coast Guard established three security zones for the Intracoastal Waterway and offshore areas near Palm Beach.
“The security zone is necessary to protect the V.I.P. and accompanying official party, the public and the surrounding waterway from terrorist acts, sabotage or other subversive acts, accidents or other causes of a similar nature,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.
Breaching one of the security zones, the Coast Guard warned, could lead to heavy fines and up to 12 years in prison.
Secret Service officials, as usual, were tight lipped about security issues, but Palm Beach’s public safety director, Kirk Blouin, emphasized that Mr. Trump’s visit was no stretch for the 70-person department. “We’ve had to protect every president since I’ve worked there in my 28 years,” Mr. Blouin said. “Every president has come multiple times, including world leaders. This is nothing new to us.”
He said the agency was playing a supporting role to the Secret Service. Although he said discussing the challenges of protecting a waterfront estate was a question for the Secret Service, he added, “I think it’s almost obvious that it does present some additional challenge.”
About 20 protesters rallied near Mar-a-Lago on Saturday night for about three hours, but there were no incidents or need for arrests, Mr. Blouin said. Homeowners have been understanding about the inconveniences, he said.
“It’s not bad today, but it may be worse other times,” he said.
Mr. Trump has sometimes had a fraught relationship with the surrounding community.
Mar-a-Lago sued Palm Beach County last year, part of a longstanding feud over its request to route air traffic away from the club. After Mr. Trump’s election, which left federal officials poised to put in place flight restrictions, the club’s legal posture changed. On Nov. 16, it asked a court to dismiss the lawsuit.

Many locals took this week’s attention in stride.
“All the presidents, everyone who runs for public office, comes to Palm Beach,” said Marie Hope Davis, president of the Palm Beach Republican Club and a resident of nearby Singer Island. “And the reason they do is because that’s where they raise money.”
Ms. Davis, who lived in Palm Beach for many years, said she suspected the chief side effect of a presidential outpost in Florida would be clogged streets.
Ms. Davis recalled that when her aunts and uncles would visit Palm Beach, they often wanted to see where President Kennedy had stayed. And she was reluctant to describe Mr. Trump as anything resembling a true Palm Beacher.
“He’s a businessman, and these clubs are his business,” she said. “I think Trump Tower, that’s his home, that’s where his heart is.”
Others wondered what the changes would mean for their bottom line.
Louis Rose is selling one house around the corner from Mar-a-Lago and is in the market for another. “We’re selling, we’re buying. We’re believers,” Mr. Rose said. “I think he will hopefully begin unifying.”
One homeowner who flew in from Pennsylvania on Tuesday had mixed feelings about the extra attention and the enormous caravan of cars that accompanied the president-elect upon his grand arrival, but was glad the authorities did not hassle residents. She would only give her first name: Mindy.
“Clearly there’s a huge difference: a gazillion billion police cars everywhere, Secret Service,” she said. “I haven’t decided whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing.”

The press are morons with a vicious streak today.....
It seems Melania does not like the WH - can't blame her, she is used to a different style, not enough gold details... but it is Americana and part of the deal. Can't see why she and Baron can't spend weekends at the WH. She could actually have him home tutored too at the WH and move in now. obama put off upgrading the oval office so as not to be inconvenienced, rude...he is a pompous jerk.

Melania and Barron will move to the White House after school is out in May/June. It's just 6 months, Trump said, then they'll all be together in the White House.

I think it is expensive to protect our Presidents and their families. I wonder why we didn't see any articles about the security on Obama for the last eight years? Or Bush for the 8 years before that? Or Clinton in the 8 years before that? I don't ever remember an article being printed EVER about the details of security for our Presidents.

There may have been some but I was thinking the same thing Judy, the press is making this a bigger deal than previous presidents. Out here we would hear of Lost Angeles coming to a near standstill when Obama would arrive for his fundraiser events (heard it on the radio). As if the city already isn't bad enough with horrific traffic conditions daily. The mainstream media will continue to hammer President-elect Donald Trump in numerous creative ways.

No one complained when Obama took all his needless trips and shut down traffic all across the world and the expense. Lets not forget Michele's Love of Hollywood and the stars and the frequent trip to appear and TV shows and all the traffic jams that caused. The Obama family vacations and world tours, the millions spent on security that was not necessary; just visits and vacations and no one complained and not a word about being reimbursed for expenses. What did it cost us for Obama and Michele to speak at rally's across the country in support of Hellery. Barron should have a right to finish his school year and no one should complain about it.
