'Results will speak much louder than complaints': Trump lashes out again at San Juan's mayor

President Donald Trump in a series of tweets on Saturday defended his administration's response to the devastation in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria, and urged Puerto Ricans to "not believe the #FakeNews!"

"Results of recovery efforts will speak much louder than complaints by San Juan Mayor. Doing everything we can to help great people of PR!" he said on Twitter.

Trump's tweets came after he faced mounting criticism of his jabs at the mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulîn Cruz. Cruz had told media on Friday that if Trump does not ramp up relief efforts, Puerto Rico could see "something close to a genocide."

"My Administration, Governor @RicardoRossello, and many others are working together to help the people of Puerto Rico in every way … #FakeNews critics are working overtime, but we're getting great marks from the people that truly matter!" Trump said on Saturday.

He continued: "We must all be united in offering assistance to everyone suffering in Puerto Rico and elsewhere in the wake of this terrible disaster."

Trump — who is spending the weekend at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey — took to Twitter to fire back, saying that Cruz, "who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump."

He continued: "Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help."

Cruz, in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper on Saturday evening, responded: "Maybe he’s used to women who have to be told what to do. That’s not how we are in San Juan."

She added that she believes Trump is "looking for an excuse for things that are not going well."

Trump then continued tweeting into the afternoon, praising other Puerto Rican officials, including Governor Ricardo Rossello and Congresswoman Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon.

Later on Saturday evening, Trump tweeted out a video featuring footage of US troops assisting Puerto Ricans, overlaid with an audio clip of Rossello praising the Trump administration's response to the natural disaster.

Trump has faced backlash in recent days for his slow response to the ongoing crisis in Puerto Rico, and has been criticized for appearing less attentive to the crisis in Puerto Rico than he was to Texas and Florida after those states were ravaged by hurricanes. It's been compared to the bungled federal response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 under President George W. Bush.

Hurricane Maria left many of Puerto Rico's 3.4 million US citizens without shelter, water, power, and other basic necessities.

"They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. 10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job," Trump said on Saturday. "The military and first responders, despite no electric, roads, phones etc., have done an amazing job. Puerto Rico was totally destroyed."

    Katrina Deaths - 1500

Maria Puerto Rico Deaths - 16

Like Trump says, the results will tell the story, the proof is in the pudding.

Hurricane Matthew killed 28 people in North Carolina last year, the largest loss of life from a Hurricane in NC since Floyd in 1999 that caused 35 deaths. We did not attack Obama over it. We didn't blame FEMA for it. Matthew barely made the news.

Any media or political organization/individual who even wants to use Katrina as a mile post for Hurricanes will not live long enough to experience a Hurricane that caused more loss of life than Katrina. All you're doing is echoing the racist DemoQuack shrill that broadcasts Black Lives Don't Matter. There were 2 heroes in Katrina and they were reporters named Shepard Smith and Geraldo Rivera.

They walked those dark streets, stood on the bridges and filmed this tragedy for Fox News. Shepard stood on that bridge for days surrounded by dead people, saying over and over "people are dying and no one is here". Geraldo Rivera heard about people in the convention center and he says to the person he was interviewing you mean the Superdome, and the person says no the Convention Center.

The Convention Center??!! Geraldo and his film crew somehow find their way over to the Convention Center to check it out and literally break through police guarding the center and bust through locked doors to find the worst scene he could have ever imagined. That was late Wednesday night, Thursday afternoon Honore was in New Orleans and by Friday am, the 82nd Airborne was on the scene and evacuated 45,000 people in less than 24 hours.

It was the worst and best of our country. I'll never forget it as long as I live, how ashamed I was to see this neglect in New Orleans during this Hurricane, and once the situation was known, how proud I was of the response less than 24 hours later. I've heard of the 82nd Airborne all my life, but not until Katrina did I have a clue how totally amazing this unit of our US military is or even with certainty what it actually did. This is one of the most incredible groups of people in our country, without a doubt.

However, but for Shepard and Geraldo, thousands more would have died before any action would have been taken, because the call to the 82nd wouldn't have been made. They both should have received Pultizers for that reporting and Geraldo and his film crew should have received Congressional Medals of Honor for what they did at the Convention Center. It was the bravest thing I've ever seen a reporting crew do in a civilian setting.
