Security detail for Obama visit much more prevalent than when Clinton visited in 2000

Herald-Whig Senior Writer
Swarms of security personnel surround President Barack Obama at all times.
Quincy Police Chief Rob Copley said there definitely is a greater Secret Service presence than in 2000 when then President Bill Clinton visited Quincy.
"What we're seeing is the difference between a pre-9-11 presidential visit and a post-9-11 visit," Copley said.
Quincy Regional Airport was set up in 2000 as a site where the public could see and greet Clinton. There were several dozen security workers, but they were dealing with hundreds of people along rope lines.
On Tuesday, the airport was a restricted access area. Only about 18 members of the news media were on hand as Obama departed Air Force One and made the short walk to Marine One. The security forces outnumbered members of the media by a wide margin.
Adams County Sheriff Brent Fischer said the number in presidential security details can be seen in local motels. At least three of Quincy's large motels are nearly filled with Secret Service agents, advance staff or others involved with the two-day tour.
Fischer was first made aware of the president's impending visit about two weeks ago and has received several briefings and coordination visits since then.
On Tuesday, the sheriff's department had about a dozen personnel on detail at the airport. Another eight or nine were nearby.
While the Secret Service is in charge of protecting the president, local law enforcement is generally there to keep track of crowds and motorists.
Fischer's deputies tried to patrol the roads and highways around the airport to keep motorists from stopping.
Illinois State Police Officer Mike Kindhart was on duty at the airport, but he was stationed in a parking lot without any view of the president. He told members of the media to get good photos, since his own camera would be useless.
Neither Copley or Fischer could estimate the cost of overtime pay and other expenses due to the president's visit. Copley said the costs in overtime have been minimal so far, but they will be extensive Wednesday as the president departs Quincy Regional Airport, comes back into Quincy after a visit to Macon and speaks at the Oakley-Lindsay Center.
