Roy Beck assessment of Mitt Romney
Roy Beck of NumbersUSA has assessed the positions of several presidential candidates on many immigration-related issues. Not surprisingly, the only candidate listed that received a rating of of "EXCELLENT" on all immigration-related issues is former presidential candidate Tom Tancredo. Duncan Hunter received the best ratings of the current candidates. Mitt Romney overall is graded higher than McCain, Guiliani and Huckabee. Gov. Romney is graded higher than Fred Thompson on some issues such as local enforcement of federal immigration laws and prohibiting states from issuing driver licenses to illegal aliens. He also scored higher than Fred Thompson when evaluated on the issue of past immigration actions while in office. Mitt Romney received a grade of "GOOD" while Fred Thompson received a grade of "FAIR". Below is copied a portion of the assessment of Mitt Romney by Roy Beck on immigration-related issues. The portions I included are assessments of Gov. Romney on issues related to illegal immigration.
Mitt Romney:
No amnesty - GOOD
Stop future illegal immigration - GOOD
Mandatory workplace verification - GOOD
Punish employers who hire illegal aliens - GOOD
Local enforcement of federal immigration laws - EXCELLENT
More security at borders - EXCELLENT
End sanctuary cities - EXCELLENT
Prohibit states from issuing driver's licenses to illegal aliens - EXCELLENT
Prohibit in-state tuition to illegal aliens - EXCELLENT

That seems accurate to me.
NumbersUSA works really hard on these ratings because people have come to depend on them. Thanks Mr. Beck and staff!

I don't think Roy should be doing these grades based on the promises of candidates. To me, this doesn't give an accurate rating. Only past experiences should be used instead of using both because as we all know, many of the ones who have supported illegals in the past, and are now currently touting the enforcement torch are most likely saying this because they think it is what we "want to hear".

Didn't Mitt Romney hire a landscaping company that had illegals working for them?

"Not his fault?" I live in Mass and there is definitly a problem here with all the phony documented workers(mostly Guatemalans.)He was a MA governor. If he couldn't do something to help the problem here(in a state this small) I don't believe he can do it for the whole country. I have lived here all my life the problen is just getting worse.

In reading the above, the point which has come up before just struck me again - that is, the aspect of 'past history (voting record probably most accurately vs. 'current positions'.
I guess there are people that:
a). Put 100% of the scrutiny on past record
b). Put 100% (or most, maybe) scrutiny on current positions
c). Some combinations of a) and b).
I suppose I tend to fall into the 'a' group above. Similarly, let me suggest one thing to pay a lot of attention to where the 'delta' between 'a' and 'b' is greatest. New found 'revelations' in perspectives is where the candidate deserves the most scrutiny.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Taylor,
First, a big part of your problem is Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, both of which voted for comprehensive immigration reform. A path to citizenship and no punishment.
Romney using his position as governor to ID illegal aliens would be considered abuse of power. Romney was a citizen that hired a landscaping company. Just like you and I, we can not determine if someone is illegal.
We can ask the company we hire, if they verify the identification of their employees and they will say yes. We can ask the employees to show us ID but how do you know they are not fakes? You can get a set of IDs at the flea market for about $40 bucks down here. A SS card for $20.
It is not the responsiblity of the person that contracts with a company to verify the employment eligibility of that company's employees. Citizens don't have access to tools like E-Verify, I-9s or employment applications. This responsiblity rest souly on the employers and they are the ones that will be fined and punished if they are breaking the law by hiring illegal aliens.

Simple solution to prevent the illegal employment of illegal aliens:
Pass a law that states it is mandatory for ALL businesses and ALL people hiring a person to do payed work of any sort to use the E-verify system. This includes business' large and small and even individuals hiring someone to do simple day jobs or any work on that person's house or property.
Note 1: I realize if won't likely catch those that have well made fraudlent ID's and SS#'s, but it would make a huge dent in the illegal employment problem. Then we can tackle the fraud.
Note 2: I especially like it since it would really put the super wealthy and elite's ass in a sling since they have a propensity to hire illegals from all over the world to be their nannies, cooks, gardners, landscapers, housekeepers, gate attendents, pool boys, etc.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
