    COMMNETARY : Immigration a Problem; Here's A Solution

    Immigration a problem; here's a solution

    By: GENE VITAMANTI - Commentary

    JANUARY 7, 2008

Immigration is the hottest political issue of the day and it is interesting to watch presidential aspirants squirm as they avoid answering questions on the subject. I admit to a little squirming myself; but I have finally made up my mind and because I am not a presidential aspirant I will lay out my theory without fear of suicide bombers hugging me to death.

Immigrants have always been good for the United States. They represent that special breed of people who, discontented with life in their own country, are willing to take a chance on the unknown. Generally, they have been honest and hard-working and fill a great need in our country.

The actual number of "illegals" is reportedly from 20 million-30 million people. Rounding them up to ship them back home would tear families apart and create one of the worst moral disasters since black segregation and the Japanese internment. We Americans like to claim the high moral ground and this would be a blot on our national character.

There is no doubt that they are going to be allowed to stay, so the issue becomes how we make the best of the situation.

First, we absolutely need to secure the borders so that further illegal immigration is stopped. Expensive? Yes, but the alternative is more costly.

Second, is a suggestion made by Bill O'Reilly: Immediately deport any illegal with a criminal record -- and we are not talking about jaywalking or parking tickets.

One of the problems that has evolved over the last few decades is the idea of encouraging cultural diversity over the melting-pot theory. This approach took root in Canada and Belgium and both countries have been fighting movements to split their land into different countries. We shouldn't stifle cultural diversity, but we should stop encouraging it and let it become a minor but fun diversion, such as St. Patrick's Day.

Educating immigrant youngsters is critical. It is expensive in the short term, but will develop big dividends in the end. The better educated they are, the better it will be for them and our country. Also, this is where they should get a heavy dose of Americanism. Instead of emphasizing diversity, emphasize Americanism ---- but don't denigrate their heredity.

Declare English to be the official language. Encourage immigrants to keep their native language, but have free night classes in English. English comes first.

A major project would be to issue tamper-proof identity cards to all noncitizens and to start a process for citizenship. Immigrants without a card would be deported. Any employer who hires noncitizens without a card would face stiff fines.

Lastly, if it is certified that we still need temporary workers, we should set up a tough verification system -- one that includes protection against rapacious employers and the middlemen. Decent pay, living and working conditions should be written into law.

This approach would continue to keep our country stable and strong.

Most of these people are willing to work hard and reveal a sense of responsibility by sending money to families in the old country instead of selfishly keeping it all and to hell with everyone else. This is the kind of people we want to join America.

Most of these illegals want free rides from the American taxpayer. This idea will never work. We do offer free English classes in the America. They don't take them. They do not want to assimulate. They could learn english through their children. They choose not to.

I really don't care about tearing families apart or putting a blot on our morals. Illegal is illegal. Allowing any one of them to stay is morally wrong for every United States Citizen who has followed the laws. Educating anchor babies and children smuggled over the border is not America's obligation. We are obligated to educate and care for our own children, not their children.

The deportation of criminal aliens would include every single one of them. They are criminals for coming here illegally. We should also deport anchor babies so they don't have an excuse to claim that big bad American's are vicious destroyers of the family unit.

Well, I guess when other people committ crimes we're going to have to start worrying about, "tearing families apart." We can't put that drug dealer in jail, it'll tear his family apart! We can't put that car thief in jail, it'll tear his family apart! The bank robber, rapist and burglar have families too, so we better just have them pay a fine and let them stay out of jail.

Oh, yeah, the thieves, robbers and drug dealers can all keep the money they've made from their crimes, because we wouldn't want to punish their children for the crimes of their parents. But we're not granting them amnesty remember, because we're making them pay a fine.

    WHAT A LOAD OF BS!!!!!!

I live close to a town that is full of prisons - almost all female.

Everyone of them 'were torn from their families'.

No one is separating families, they do that themselves, as do the illegals.

When did we reach the point in this country that we decided if one steals 'for a good reason' it's OK. And if they continue to steal if it's just to have a better life, it's OK.

That only goes for illegals, however, because I'll bet many of those women 'torn from their families' stole 'to have a better life'.

We have to get real - and soon.

The only candidate in the debates who took a strong stand on illegals
    was Fred Thompson.

We need to demagnetize. They will go home when public services and
welfare are cut off and employers are required to validate the legitimacy
of their workers. It just looks so simple to me!!!!

Agreed 100 percent - in order to fix this issue, somebody, somewhere is going to be hurt. And I no longer care if others view me as a bigot or a racist. What I am is an American who loves his country very dearly, so dearly that I have given my entire adult life in service to it through the military. And I am sick of this immivasion of my country, a country I was sworn to protect from invaders. I want them out of my country; I want them to take their unrestrained breeding and their drain on our society with them. I want them to take their dirty habits and their absolute disregard of this country's laws and culture with them. And to anyone who thinks we cannot survive without them I say this -

That is a completely self-serving and unsubstantiated myth set forth by big business and government to justify their insatiable urge for low cost labor and political votes. During the years between the end of World War II until approximately 1966, America built one of the most robust economies the world has ever seen. At one point there was actually a negative net immigration loss. More people were leaving this country than were entering it, yet the lawns were mowed, the grocery store shelves were stocked, the food was cooked and the bathrooms were cleaned. The idea that America suddenly can no longer run this country without the use of foreign labor is utterly ridiculous.

That is actually a part of a private letter I am composing on all of my views of illegal immigration - a letter that when I finally have it finished perhaps I will post here.....
    OK....done venting now....
