The Congressional Hispanic Caucus on Thursday defended its decision this week to exclude a Republican, saying the caucus isn’t about ethnicity but instead about sharing liberal viewpoints.

The defense came after the CHC voted to deny Rep. Carlos Curbelo, Florida Republican, a seat in the caucus.

“The CHC isn’t just an organization for Hispanics; it is a Caucus that represents certain values. This vote reflects the position of many of our members that Rep. Curbelo and his record are not consistent with those values,” CHC spokesman Carlos Paz Jr. said in a statement.

He did not say what those positions were.

Mr. Curbelo on Twitter said he was shocked when some CHC members accused him of being “anti-Hispanic.”

“The truth is that they only care about Hispanics as long as they are registered Democrats,” he said.

Congress has dozens of caucuses, which generally are gatherings for lawmakers who share the same interest or identity. There are state caucuses, caucuses devoted to policy issues, and those who share hobbies.

But the ethnic caucuses are among the most noteworthy. There’s one for black members, one for Asian and Pacific American lawmakers, and one for Hispanics.

They often claim moral high ground in debates on issues of discrimination, civil rights and immigration.

Hispanic Caucus denies membership to Republican Curbelo

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus on Thursday denied Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo’s membership bid, the latest volley in a nasty dispute between the Florida lawmaker and some members of the all-Democratic caucus.

The group voted to oppose Curbelo’s bid to join after weeks of back-and-forth between him and some members of the group who have questioned whether his intentions to join the CHC were politically motivated.

Curbelo represents a Latino-heavy district in Miami that is a top target for Democrats in 2018.

Some CHC members were turned off by Curbelo’s refusal to back the DREAM Act, their bill to grant legal status to young undocumented immigrants who could face deportation as soon as March.

Members also said a private argument between Curbelo and CHC Chairwoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M.), in which he accused her and the caucus of discriminating against him, soured their feelings.

Curbelo has said Democrats are the ones playing politics, refusing to let him into the group because he is a Republican.

In a statement after the decision, group spokesman Carlos Paz Jr. said the CHC "isn’t just an organization for Hispanics; it is a Caucus that represents certain values. This vote reflects the position of many of our members that Rep. Curbelo and his record are not consistent with those values.”

The so-called ethnic caucuses are discriminatory and should be disbanded! Ironically, there is no such thing as a caucasian caucus. Could you imagine the uproar such a caucus would cause?

Hispanic Caucus Chair: Republican Blocked Because Group Is Used to Strategize Against Trump

Congressional Hispanic Caucus chairwoman Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D., N.M.) said that the reason the caucus excluded a Hispanic Republican from joining is that the group needs to strategize against the White House.

Grisham went on to say that having a Republican would create an environment in which they could not strategize the way they currently do, Business Insider reported. The caucus claims to be bipartisan but does not have any Republican members and has not for two decades.

Grisham told reporters that caucus members made the decision "because we have strategies about the White House and we have strategies about those committees and we have strategies about who we are working on and leveraging with and that creates an environment where we stop having strategic discussions."

The congressman the caucus refused membership, Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R., Fla.), was rejected for "not sharing the members' values."

"The CHC isn't just an organization for Hispanics; it is a Caucus that represents certain values," Grisham said. "This vote reflects the position of many of our members that Rep. Curbelo and his record are not consistent with those values."

A spokesperson for Curbelo castigated the caucus in a statement to Business Insider.

"While the Congressional Hispanic Caucus continues to play petty partisan games, Congressman Curbelo has already said he would support any DACA solution that comes to the floor," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson, Joanna Rodriguez, added that the caucus promotes segregation of America's Hispanic community.

"The Congressional Hispanic Caucus puts partisan politics first and the advancement of Hispanic Americans last," she said. "Congressman Curbelo stated before the Caucus and in multiple statements to media that he was more than willing to sit out of strategic/partisan conversations Democrats wanted to have. Again, the CHC has exposed itself as an organization that embraces discrimination and bigotry and that promotes the segregation of America's Hispanic community."

Grisham rejected the idea of changing the name of the caucus to reflect a partisan bent.
